This adventure took place on August of 2021. Sterling contacted me and explained a few weeks prior he had lost his rose gold wedding band of seven years in the Cle Elum River in a rapid.My first reaction after hearing river rapids left me a bit questioning what chance of recovery we would have but I always remain optimistic and refuse to blurt out negativity during my interview process. I learned early on by having an open mind willing to seek out all possibilities is more than half the battle in all of these recovery cases.
Sterling continue to share his story that he believed he lost his wedding band when going down an aggressive rapid attached to a popular river swimming hole. He went on to tell me he had returned a few days after the incident with a snorkel, mask and fins and actually got over the top of the rapid looking for his ring. He had a stick in his hand that he was poking the rocks with when he saw a shimmer. After closer inspection it was a wedding ring that he was able to poke his stick through and pulled it out of the river. It was not his ring but it was found in the same spot he suspected his was lost.
We made a plan to meetup so he could show me the exact spot where he rode the rapid and lost his wedding band. He also shared that the access would be fairly easy for me to get my SCUBA gear to the water. I was energetic and ready for this day of adventure, to SCUBA dive a clean mountain river would be a welcome refreshing mission.
After arriving Sterling was very detailed and clear on his recollection of the days events that took place when he lost his ring. After a brief introduction and recap of his story we got the gear setup and straight to action. It was an easy entry to the down stream swimming hole just after the rapid. This area was wide and allowed for plenty of room for any one blown through the rapid to easily swim without a strong current danger. This is what makes this site a very popular swimming hole. My dive plan was to start down stream in the calmer waters and work my search effort up into the actual rapid.
My plan worked as intended and turned in to a very enjoyable dive effort. At some point during my dive Sterling got my attention and signaled me to surface. He had been working the rapid with mask, fins and snorkel again while I was at depth searching the river bed. He told me he located two rings. When he went to retrieve them he got one and the other blew past a bit and got caught up in some rocks under the rapids. He told me he actually recovered his own rose gold wedding band and he wanted me to recover the other wedding ring still in the rapid.
I was very happy for him to have found his ring and absolutely amazed that three lost wedding rings had been found in this section of the river. I made my way back into the rapid with my SCUBA gear and the flow of the river was extremely compressed as it channeled through the bedrock. Even though it was only a few feet at most the restriction of the river water drastically increases the pressure. Along with this there was a lot of bubble formation that causes a little bit of a visibility impairment when trying to search for lost items. I also had to keep my face down as not to have the flow of the river pushing against the purge on my SCUBA regulator. If at any time I were to find the conditions beyond my physical capabilities I would have been able to easily abort the action. Fortunately I was able to coexist in this extreme river environment but had to take it slow and calculate my every move.
I was able to work my way into the rapid and after digging around in the bed rocks I uncovered the third wedding ring Sterling had told me about.
It was a great day and we were very happy to have recovered three missing wedding rings from the grips of the river.
Sterling was very happy and appreciative of my support and assistance on this mission. We both walked away exhausted with smiles from ear to ear.
As a recovery specialist these are some of the most memorable experiences I will look back upon. With a quiet humbleness I will remember owning the river for that brief moment in time.

This adventure took place on August of 2021.Andrew contacted me asking for some assistance in locating his hammered white gold wedding band of fifteen years. He explained that he was in town visiting a friend enjoying some time on Alki Beach. Before their dinner plans they had walked as a group down to the beach enjoying the views. While on the beach a near by volleyball rolled their direction from a close game. Andrew explained that he picked up the volleyball and with both hands on the ball at chest level thrusted it back towards the players. In doing so he immediately realized his wedding band had shot off his finger over the dry sand.
As we know once any ring is dropped over dry sand it is immediately consumed and out of sight in a second. Alki beach is one of our most popular beaches in the Seattle area so I made a priority to start my search as quickly as possible if there were to be any chance of a recovery.
Andrew and I were not able to meet in person so we worked many details through text messaging. After I arrived on the beach I was able to send many photos trying to narrow down exactly where he was when the ring went missing. There was quite a bit of uncertainty of the precise location but he had a solid memory of the general area witch was enough for me to get started.
Andrew’s visit to Seattle had also come to an end and he was flying back home the the East Coast as I continued searching for his lost wedding band.
After several attempts over the course of three consecutive days I learned his friend who lives within minutes of the beach most likely had a clearer idea of where he was standing when the ball was tossed.After reaching out to the friend I learned that he had tried to locate the ring himself with a rented metal detector with no success, just finding some typical beach trash. June of 2021 in the middle of our summer heat wave I was contacted by Andy who needed some dive recovery assistance. He was in town for a bachelor party staying at a lake side rental property. The home has its own back yard private dock on Lake Sammamish. With the summer heat at full boil at 102° F everyone had been spending a lot of time in the water. Andy’s situation was no different, he decided after a cup of morning wakeup coffee to take a refreshing jump off the end of the dock. As he was swimming up to the surface he felt his platinum wedding band slide off is finger. He had a moment of panic then got on line to do a little research on how to find a lost ring in the lake. Thankfully he landed on TheRingFinders.com website and hailed my attention for assistance.
Once I arrived on site with all my gear one of the top two constraints to this mission was the broiling heat and the large down hill pathway from the residence to the waters edge. Both of witch we managed at a slow pace. Being cautious not to get heat stroke plenty of fluids were consumed and the dive gear was not put on until moments before entering the refreshing lake water. Refreshing it was!
Even though the ring was lost at a shallow sixteen foot depth it was too deep for a typical swimmer to search. The lake bottom in the middle of the summer was in full bloom with lots of organic growth that directly translates into silty low visibility waters. With my trained SCUBA dive capabilities, metal detection gear, PVC search grid and lost item search experience I was able to recover his ring from the lake.
All ended well as Andy was able to be reunited with his wedding ring. He was happy to continue on with the enjoyment of the weekend celebration. June of 2021 I came across a public post of a gentleman who had just lost a very important gold heirloom coin ring in the heart of down town Seattle. This post caught my attention and drove some immediate concerns due to the excessive amount of details that were published. This compelled me to reach out to offer a hand of assistance.

I quickly reached out to this man and learned that Louis was devastated having had just lost a very important heirloom gold coin ring that meant the world to him. The story went like this Louis had a routine of taking his ring off each night and placing it on his night stand. He would put it on in the morning while getting ready for work. His wife would drive him and his dog to the office in the morning. It turned out in the morning while preparing for his day he had grabbed some stale dog treats and tossed them into a garbage bin at his home as he went out the back door. He looked in that trash bin and found his ring!!!
He was so grateful for the time spent chatting and now has his family heirloom gold King George ring back on his finger!

This adventure started back in February of 2021.At that time I had helped our local KIRO morning news talk show anchor locate her lost wedding rings. Out of this exciting recovery effort a radio interview was published showcasing the amazing services of TheRingFinders.com
This piece aired around Valentine’s Day 2021 and grabbed the attention of many people in need of lost item recovery support. One of those that reached out to me was a woman named Kelly. She shared with me that quite some time ago she was at her parents home in Seattle and had lost her wedding ring. She was inside the bathroom and needed to secure her ring. She opened the cabinet door under the sink and quickly tossed her diamond wedding ring onto the shelf, closed the door and heard a clink clink sound. She opened the cabinet door and the ring was gone! After a quick look she notice a substantial crack in the back of the cabinet and knew her ring had gone into the crack. Kelly’s father did as any good father would and got some tools out and made a hole in the lower portion of the cabinet and the search was on but no one could find the ring after much effort and searching. They noticed there a heating and cooling vent near this same area and became somewhat concerned the ring might have gone into the ducting. After all their efforts the ring was not found.
Kelly’s husband bought her a nice replacement but it was just never the same as the ring she got married with. The story seems to go cold and and they basically thought that some day many years later they might have to rip the whole bathroom counter out to locate the missing ring.
When Kelly heard the KIRO new interview she contacted me asking if I could help! Of course I was eager to assist and reassured her I had the proper tools and experience for this type of search. However due to her elder parents and COVID vaccinations just coming on board we had to set a schedule a few months after we were all vaccinated. That day finally arrived and so did I will my tools in hand with an eager anticipation to find Kelly’s lost wedding ring.
It is important to note that a common misconception is that I am just a guy with a metal detector. In reality I am a recovery specialist and the metal detector is only one of the key tools of my trade. There is quite a bit to be said for my investigative approach in collecting as many details as I can before ever stepping foot on to the site. After a detailed discussion I am best prepared with the proper tools and formulated game plan on how to go about the search in the most effective ways. For in home searches most times my go to tool is a video endoscope. Structures are full of metal and can’t be shoved in the tiniest of cracks. Honestly the video endoscope is an amazing tool as it has helped recovered a lot of lost rings and small items of value.
When I arrived and was introduced to the bathroom it was immediately apparent that the rings most likely fell through a decent size crack. It was also apparent that Kelly’s dad went through quite the effort in busting a hole in the lower cabinet tying to gain access to find the ring. After quite some time and effort with my endoscope looking behind the cabinet, into the walls, and inside the heating ducting the ring was not immediately apparent. Using a small vacuum I removed a small pile of plaster and debris and still had quite the challenge. Then a small tinny glint of white gold appeared in the very bottom of the crack. At first I did not want to jump the gun and get over excited. As we often find other metal items that may look promising at first but turn out to be a dud. After a bit more cleaning and repositioning my inspection camera I caught a side view of one of the prongs and that shine only a diamond can make. I was on the ring now! I carefully tried to pry the ring free but it was wedged into the crack and was not coming loose. Another special tool I carry is a medical grade gripper cable that doctors use to retrieve foreign objects that have been swallowed by their patients. This little crab claw gripper is a precision tool and not one easily obtained in your standard hardware store. With this gripper I was able to get the proper grasp on the ring and shake it loose as if I was pulling a loose tooth. After a few gentle tugs the ring came free from its hiding place.
After announcing the recovery of the ring and sharing a moment of overwhelming joy I learned that it has been stuck in the cabinet for the past four years!It never ceases to amaze me even after having done this work for a few years how these rings can find the crazies of places to hide. This amazing story started with a call for help from a very stressed and tired couple. Sylvia and Callan reached out to me asking for my assistance in helping them find three missing diamond wedding rings.We had a very extensive phone conversation and through my interview approach we reconstructed a time line and possible conditions that may guide us to recovery plan. So many great successes have happen when people take the time to open up and share the details of their loss. An open mind always helps when people are willing to be lead though the process as participants rather than bystanders. I tell people all the time the end goal is that your lost item of value is recovered however this may come about. I don’t have to be the one that finds it just allow me to assist you. We put a lot of ideas on the table and figured out where best to put my hands to work where it makes the most since. I told them its a team effort and hopefully by the end of the process we will have found your rings or at the very least have some strong confidence where it isn’t.
Sylvia’s three diamond rings were last seen on on her night stand on Thursday and it came to their attention two days later on Saturday they they were gone no where to be found. After a frantic few days of searching their home they contacted me on Wednesday the 2nd asking for help.
Callan explained his wife had just lost three separate gold wedding rings totaling several carrots in diamonds. I learned Sylvia is in the habit of taking her rings off each night and placing them in a dish on her night stand. When she went to collect her rings a few days later all three rings were missing and no where to be found. I inquired if any external people had access to her apartment. They explained their four year old daughter was at the home when the rings went missing. They had asked her and got mixed answers. It was also told to me that Sylvia had found her rings on the bed before because the young girl had previously played with them. There was no other persons in the apartment. They have a dog that doesn’t get on to things and a cat that may have jumped on to the night stand. We all had our suspicions that the young daughter might have migrated the rings to different places in the home that they had not looked yet. Prior to calling me they went through every inch of her things with not even a single ring found. I said that is odd that you lost all three and have’t even found one yet. I was told before she started lookin for her rings they had been cleaning the house all day. The whole time the daughter was happily at play.
I threw out a lot of typical suggestions to check clothing. They informed me they had already looked over their washer and close dryer. I also inquired about all the house hold garbage. Callan said he had gone through all of it. I pressed him a bit and asked how thorough of an inspection he had made. I was reassured with his military experience and deep drive to find his wife’s expensive wedding ring set he searched every scrap. A short time later in the conversation they had a memory that it might have been possible the kitchen trash was the only bag that was taken outside to the dumpster. They said that was about a week ago and believed it could have already been collected. I tried to reassure them that we needed to remain positive and not think the worst. They still had a lot of area to search within their home and soon there after I would drop by to do an in home inspection. We had schedule the home inspection for the 10th. In the mean time I left them with plenty of tips on how to continue searching and stressed that they had to remain very detailed and concise with their efforts. I left them with the following statement, “I pray God’s hand of protection are upon your rings, that they are still in the home and that we recover all three of them shortly!”
The next morning June 3rd at 8:45 AM I find the following photos on my text message from Callan.
Callan writes, “Found them in our trash bag at the bottom of our apartment dumpster.”
As soon as I noticed the text message I made a call to get the details. Callan told me that night in his sleep he recalled vacuuming his master bedroom while helping with the house cleaning effort. He remembered hearing three distinct noises being vacuumed up but thought nothing of it at the time and carried on. After the vacuuming the canister vacuum was emptied onto the kitchen trash and then that trash was taken out to the dumpster! When he woke up he went straight outside to to find a completely full trash dumpster He said he trashed a pair of pants and shoes as he made his way to very bottom of the dumpster where he located his kitchen trash bag. He noticed the pet hair and initial located two of the rings fairly quickly, got a bit stressed but found the third after a little more digging through the pet hair. They suspected Sylvia may have been hurried when she placed her rings on the corner of the night sand and possibly not into the dish. There was also some possibility their cat could have jumped onto the night stand as some point batting the rings off the table onto the floor below. As we were speaking on the phone wrapping up our conversation he stopped me to let me know the trash truck had just arrived to empty the dumpster!
Thank God for answering our prayers and prompting Callan in the middle of the night. We were all so very thankful for the outcome and once again shocked to learn of another set of wedding rings, this time not just one ring but three all being saved within moments of being hauled to the landfill never to have been seen again.

She told me that her daughter had been tossing snow balls in their back yard, had lost her wedding ring and they were franticly searching all over when she heard the radio interview. In our initial correspondence I instructed her family to carefully check all gloves and clothing and the surrounding area but to be reassured I was on my way to do a search. My schedule was set to come out quickly there after however before I showed up I got the good news. Janice reported that her daughter had located her wedding ring inside one of the glove’s fingers. I was happy to hear the good news, shared some smiles over the phone and in closing reminded them to keep me in mind anyone else ever needs some lost item recovery help to reach out to me.
Fast forward to May 2021, I received a phone call from Janice again. As the call came across my phone I scratched my head as her name seemed very familiar. She quickly explained her daughters past situation then proceeded to tell me her son just had a recent incident in their same back yard. She told me that he had a bit of a stressful moment and threw an item across the back yard. In doing so his large chunky wedding band launched off his finger at the same time.They had searched all over with no success and asked if I could pay a visit to look for his ring. Of course I was happy to take the call and meet up with them soon after.
When I arrived her son, Tim, explained he had tossed a bottle across the yard and his ring flew off. I reassured them that we all have our moments but not to worry that his ring was some place in the yard and being that this was a recent incident we had a great opportunity in finding his ring. He describe his ring as a chunky black wedding band with flat sides like a hex nut.
After searching the yard with my medal detectors and visually searching several hiding places with a bright flashlight in hand I eventually made my way back to my starting point. This is where I located his ring no more than maybe a few feet from where he had made his initial toss. His big chunky tungsten carbide wedding band was found laying obscured by some thick grass just waiting to be discovered by my medal detector.
Tim and his family were happy to see the ring recovered and back on his finger. All was well once again with smiles and appreciation for Tim’s recovered wedding ring.

Shannon called me sharing that she had just dropped her cell phone in to Hicks Lake. She was with her friend Karen enjoying a day of paddle boarding when this incident took place. Shannon fell off her paddle board into the lake. Karen’s dog then jumped from one paddle board to the the other to help Shannon. Karen then also fell of her board and her dog then jumped back to Karen’s board. In all the commotion Shannon’s iPhone 11 fell off her board into the lake and down it went!
Shannon told me a few key points of information during our pone interview. Her iPhone 11 was not backed up so it was important to recover it. The phone was inside one of those clear PVC plastic phone bags with a clip on the top and a neck lanyard. She could not see the bottom of the lake where the phone dropped however they were relatively close to shore. Fortunately the drop zone took place next to a residential buoys so there was a solid land mark to work from. She told me there was about three white jug buoys. However the one they were closest to had a big handle and no label or printing any longer on the container.
After hearing all this I asked a slew of inquisitive questions to aid in the efficiency of my search. I said if the buoy is the center of the clock and shore is at 6 o’clock what bearing would you say the drop zone is from the buoy.She thought about it and told me 11 o’clock seemed to be most accurate.
Due Shannon’s work schedules she sent her friend Karen to meet me on site who also witnessed this whole event take place. I asked the same clock bearing question to her without any prompting and after a bit of though she also confidently stated 11 o’clock. This was reassuring to me as viable intel to work.
Having my dive scooter greatly improve my efficiencies on this dive to motor over to the buoys to start my dive search. When I arrived at the first buoy I could not see any of the others from my low position in the water. I noticed a white jug with a handle and no printing on the side so I felt confident I was at the “drop zone” and proceeded with my first dive. I worked the area with a max operating depth of 15’.After a bit of time using visual inspection, medal detection and a bit of scooter searching I was perplexed after 40 minutes of work. I surfaced to clear my mind for a quick reset when it occurred to me I had possibly been searching the wrong buoy. I then inspected the buoy I just dove and the back side of the container still had a label on it. At this point I also remembered her telling me her buoy was fairly close to shore.
I scootered a short distance and could just make out the second white jug buoy. When I got up to the container and fully inspected it more carefully this time I confirmed this one was correct as it was completely free of all writing and labels. This buoy as also much closer to the shore as described during our phone interview. The placement of these buoys were not visible from my shore entry point and guarded by private property. Because of this I was not able to have anyone directly point the buoy out to me from shore. At this point my confidence level was boosted as I ascended down on my second dive effort to search for her phone.
This time on my second dive with a MOD of 13’ I was efficiently rewarded with the phone recovery via a simple visual search. It paid to ask what orientation from the buoy they remembered. Based on this I was able to make a simple swim out towards the 11 o’clock bearing and quickly located her lost phone at 11 feet concluding this dive within 5 minutes.

When I located her phone on the lake floor it was still sealed inside the dry bag and still look dry. There was no way at the surface of the water at my dive float was I willing to even sneak a peak at the phone so I left the bag sealed up until I reached the shore.
The good news was after five days as a shallow eleven feet the new phone bag she had just purchased did its job in keeping her phone dry!
Lessons Learned…
Continue to ask a lot of detailed investigative questions and take good notes, they often pay great dividends in the outcome of any search. What I will try to do moving forward especially when the search is a day or more past the initial interview is to reread carefully through my notes before the search effort so the details are fresh in my mind.Another take way for all of us when things are not adding up, stop beating up the same areas already searched. Take a moment to pause and reconsider the information provided and new information gained by what search efforts you have made to this point. Fortunately my assessment that I had been diving the wrong zone came to me and I was able to adjust my search effort for the successful recovery of the lost phone. I also had a great appreciation for having the appropriate gear for the job. Even though they said it was a short swim to the buoy it would have been much more taxing on my energy level if I had to free swim the whole operation towing my dive float and search gear along. With the aid of my dive scooter I was able to conserve my energy to maintain a safe dive profile and effectively operate with many details on my mind throughout the whole operation.

Sarah lost three silver rings in Horseshoe Lake during a kayaking adventure and small swim. She was devastated over the loss of her rings and shared this situation with one of her good friends. About two weeks after the loss of her rings we met up on a perfect sunny day. We came prepared with our kayaks because the route to the suspected drop zone was about one mile from the launch and inaccessible by foot.Full of optimism, gear, experience and ambition we took off in our boats on an adventure to find a little cove she stopped at to take a small cool off swim on the day of the loss. The rings had been tucked into her top and as she adjusted her clothing the rings fell into the lake unnoticed. She went on a small swim out and back then kayaked back to the launch site. Just before they got out of the lake it became apparent what had happened. Her rings were missing! They raced back to the cove, looked through the water but to no avail could not find any of the rings due the silty lake bottom. In the process of searching that day her cell phone fell into the lake but she was able to reach down and easily retrieve her phone.
