Matthew contacted me last night. He had been at the beach earlier in the day throwing a ball for his dog, when after a good toss, he realized his ring was missing. The ring was a bit of a loose fit, so they figured it flew off in the direction of the thrown ball. The ring was a special gift from his girlfriend, who had it custom made for him with special engravings on the sides. I let him know that we should get on the search as soon as possible, so we arranged to meet as soon as I could get to the area.

When I arrived, we met up, and Matthew and his girlfriend took me over to the area of the loss. I could see where they had been searching, and Matthew showed me where he had been standing when he threw the ball, and direction the ball was thrown. I started searching, laying out a tight grid finding bottle caps, and other various pieces of metal, but no ring. I expanded the area thinking he might have thrown it further than he thought finding more bottle caps but no ring. I widened the search area, no ring. I then went back to the starting point, and began a backwards search, and on the first pass, got a booming signal, scooped, and in the scoop was this big beautiful silver ring. I pulled it out, and they were baffled by the fact that the ring was found just behind where Matthew had been standing when he threw the ball. I always tell people that what they lost isn’t always where you think it is. That is why we as Ring Finders can be so effective at locating lost jewelry, it is because we are not emotionally tied to the search, and can think out of the box. A beautiful warm Summer evening!

Brooks contacted me after losing his cell phone at the beach the day before. He had spent about 3 hours searching for it with no luck. I wondered if the county machines had picked it up during their beach sweep, but Brooks assured me that it was still showing up on the « Find My iPhone » app. We arranged to meet up at the area, and I was on my way.

When I arrived Brooks had another phone, and was able to show me the latest report from his phone, and it showed we were almost on top of it. I set up, and began my grid. After about two passes, and about 3 minutes time, I was able to dig his phone out of the sand and give it back. He was very relieved to have it back. A worthwhile morning!

I received a call from David who was calling for a friend that had lost his ring in the sand at the beach. David remembered me from 3 years prior when he called me for another friend who had lost his ring, which I found. This time his friend Brian had put his wedding ring in his hat when he went into the water, but forgot when his belongings were moved so the two of them could practice their Wifflle Ball skills. I let them know I would be able to come right away.

I got to the area, and David found me to wave me over the spot of the loss. He showed me the area, which did not seem to be large, right next to a trash can. I began my search grid, not finding anything. I then began a grid behind the trash can, and right next to it received a good signal. I had to scoop a couple of times because the target was moving, but when I raised the scoop, inside was a nice gold ring. I gave it back to Brian, who was happy he did not have to go home and have to explain to his wife how it was lost.😊 Another great day!

White Marlin Open Tournament Ring Lost in the surf at Manhattan Beach, CA…Found and Joyfully Returned.

I received a distressed email from Tommy the other day. He had lost a very special ring in the surf at the beach that he had been wearing for the past 23 years. He had won the ring at the Maryland DC White Marlin Open Tournament in 1997, a tournament that he had fished for most of his life, and to lose this precious reward was a major blow. The problem was that the ring was lost 3 days earlier, and I was already thinking that the possibility of a recovery was going to be slim to none. The best chance of a search was going to be the next morning, so that was going to be 4 days. I called Tommy and we discussed what had happened. There were details about the loss that were favorable, like the fact he lost it at high tide, which would have put me in a good position at low tide the next day. He was not able to meet me there for the search, but was able to give me a great landmark to use to do the search, so I let him know I would go, and let him know one way or the other if I was able to locate his ring.

I got to the area, and began my search at the top of the slope working North and South, and worked my way down to the water. There was so much sand, and I was not getting any signals although I was using one of my deepest detectors. I finally found one crusted penny. I reached the water’s edge, and donned my chest waders to search in the surf. I now worked East and West trying to maintain a close grid working down the beach. I was able to go out into the surf quite far because after going through a hole, there was a sand bar that raised back up, and was flat out to the breaking waves. I found another crusted penny out there, and ended up covering the whole area that I had searched up on the slope. Tommy had told me that if anything, he might have been more North of the landmark as opposed to South, so I moved up to continue searching in the Northern direction. I made a few passes from the top of the slope into the water, and while about 30 feet out in the water, out on the bar I got a good signal. I was able to scoop the target digging once, and after washing the sand from the scoop saw the ring I was hunting, I couldn’t believe it was still there, but seeing it made me very happy. I took a picture of the ring and sent a text to Tommy letting him know about the recovery, and he sent a me a text back, one of total disbelief. We arranged to meet when he got off of work, to return the ring. When we met, he told me how he had been in communication with the tournament to find out if the ring could be replaced, because he thought it was lost forever. I was very honored to be able to hand this precious memory back to him; made his day!

Lit Papi (Stage Name) called me last night explaining that he lost his girlfriend’s ring at the beach. I had just finished dinner, poured myself a cup of coffee, and let him know I would be on my way.

When I arrived Lit Papi met me and showed me where they had been sitting and explained what happened. The area was not large, so I knew this would be a quick search. I searched on the one side of the area, finding only a nickel. I then began in the other direction, when after one pass, I got a good signal, put in the scoop, which now had the ring inside. He was happy to be able to get his girlfriend’s ring back. They would both sleep well now, I was sure.

Keith called me for a search of a church rectory and children’s play yard. The rectory had recent work, and they were worried about nails and other pointy things left over from the construction, and he also wanted me to check the play yard for dangerous items. I let him know this would be possible, and we arranged a time to meet.

When I got to the church, Keith met me, and showed me where to search. I began, and found that there were many deep items, but not much surface items, but I was able to find some around the rectory. After searching the rectory, we went over to the play area, where in the crumbled tire mulch that surrounded the equipment I was able to find many items that could have caused serious injury to the children. After I finished Keith seemed very happy to know that the children would be safer.

I was out on the bike path of the beach yesterday getting some exercise when I received a call from Eric. Eric explained to me that he had been in his yard with some friends the other day when somehow his new hearing aid fell from his ear into the grass. He told me how they had searched, but were unable to find it. We arranged to meet today to do the search.

I got to his house as soon as I was able, and met Eric. He had his remaining hearing aid in a « Zip Lock » bag waiting for me so I could check to see if my detector would be able to pick it up. I laid it out on the grass of his yard, and scanned it, there was enough metal for it to see. I then checked it with my pin pointer, also a good signal. Eric showed me where he had been most of the day, so I began my search checking each good signal, but it was not in that area. I then began moving out of the box. Eric showed me where he had raked the leaves and debris to the edge, so I made sure to check there as well, no hearing aid. As soon as I moved out of the area he had showed me I got another good signal, put in my pin pointer, and there it was. The color was somewhat neutral, so it really blended in with the surrounding grass and dirt, but there it was. I brought it over to Eric, who was very happy to have it found. I was great to be able to help him out; a fine day!

Eric sent the following testimonial:

« I cannot say enough about how lucky I feel that I found Steve Smith via Ringfinders network. A relatively new and expensive hearing aid somehow fell out of my ear while having a small , « social distancing » cocktail with friends in our backyard recently. My wife and I raked and raked the grass with expectation that we would find it-but failed. I then decided to try to rent a metal detector to search again by myself-but, found that to be a tough process. And, as my new hero Steve pointed out, I would have had trouble learning how to use it. I found Steve via a Google Search and the rest was history. We live in Pasadena area Foothills-which is a long schlep for Steve-but he drove over the next day. He is a class act and a real gentleman and he found the device after almost an hour of very dedicated searching. My only « quibble » with Steve’s services is that he lets the customer decide on payment. I decided to both pay him, and then make a donation to a charity that he chose. Eric »

Katie lost her engagement ring of 1 1/2 years yesterday at the beach where she had gone to beat the heat we are experiencing here in Southern California. While she was brushing the sand off, her ring unknowingly came off in the soft sand. After she realized what had happened and intensely searched for it, she found me on The Ring Finders site and called me this morning. We discussed what had happened, and it sounded like we should be able to find the ring. we arranged to meet at the beach when her time would allow.

When I arrived, because of the remote location surrounded by mountains, I was losing my phone signal, so finding her became an exercise, but we were finally able to connect. Katie then led me down to the area they had been the previous day. She had marked the spot with sticks ( a very smart move) in order to find it the next day. She explained where she had been, and I was off and searching. After a couple of passes with no signal I received a very low tone in the headphones, but kind of « sticky ». It was the only signal so I dug, and dumped the sand and rescanned the hole, I had gotten it out. I then scanned the dumped sand and the signal was strong, I scooped again and there in the scoop was her beautiful gold and diamond engagement ring. Oh was she happy! She then called her fiancé to let him know the ring had been found. She put the phone on speaker, and he expressed his gratitude as well. To see her joy was a refreshing sight in this time when many are fearful and despairing. What a really great day!

Al called me last week to ask my help in finding his wedding ring. He had been cleaning out a yard drain of dead leaves in his neighbor’s yard, and spreading the leaves out so as to not make a pile of them when he noticed his wedding ring of 46 years missing from his hand. We talked, and he told me that as soon as he secured permission from the neighbor to have me search with my detector, he would call me back. He called yesterday letting me know he had the permission, and we arranged to do the search today.

When I arrived Al was waiting for me. I got my equipment together, and he walked me over to the yard. It was overgrown with grass, and had a thick layer of dead leaves which would create quite a problem in locating a small item like a wedding ring for sure. Al told me he had tried with a detector his wife had purchased for him previously, but without success. I have found that without experience, trying to do the search not knowing how to use the detector usually results in an experiment in frustration for the person looking. I have the time on the detector, and the number of recoveries to know when to press on in an abysmal situation. When I turned the detector on, right away I was experiencing electrical interference, so I adjusted for that. Then there was a chain link fence next to the search area, so when I received a good signal near the fence, I adjusted the pin pointer for that area. The yard was very clean of metal trash, and I got a couple of good signals that proved to be too deep for recent loss. It wasn’t until I got about 20 feet from the drain that I got a great double beep on a shallow signal, put the pin pointer in moving the leaves around, when we both sighted the ring edge on its side pushed into the dirt. Al was so very happy when I lifted it out and handed it to him. He and his wife picked out the rings (hers is similar) 46 years ago when they got married. 46 years, truly a marriage made in Heaven. So glad to be a help, especially in these dire times!

I received an early morning call from Whitney the other day regarding the loss of his wife’s wedding ring. It seems that 3 days earlier she had been out in the yard playing with her son, and took her rings off so as not to get them messed up. She laid them on the grass, but did not take into account their dogs running around. So when she went back to retrieve her rings they were gone, quite possibly kicked around by the dogs and pushed down into the grass. We arranged on a time to come out, and I readied my equipment for the search.

When I got to their house Whitney met me and showed me the area of the loss, which wasn’t large. He then explained how he had searched and found the engagement ring, but after about a total of 8 hours of searching over the 3 days, was not able to locate the wedding band. I set up my equipment for this search and began a tight grid. About 5 minutes into the search, I got a great shallow signal, and to Whitney’s surprise, found the ring, just a couple of feet from the original location. It was a small yellow gold ring that was easily hidden in the brown parts of the grass. Needless to say Whitney and his wife were pleased to have found The Ring Finders, and I was happy to be able to reunite them with their precious token of love!
