*** I received a call from Taylor, who had lost a thin silver necklace in the dry sand at a small cove in Laguna Beach, CA. The first thing I noticed was my caller ID indicated that I had recovered a Cartier ring for her last year.

It was like talking to an old friend. She said, she was at Table Rock Beach Cove in South Laguna.  She had placed her thin silver necklace on the towel while she wet for a swim. Her friend picked up the towel not knowing the chain was there. They could not find the necklace even though it was in a 10’x10’ area.

I met them at Table Rock Beach after driving 10 miles. It was a bit of a walk down a couple hundred steps down to the sand. Because the chain was very thin and it had a very small pendant. I brought two detectors and a special sand rake that I use for small items that can’t be detected. No way was I willing to hike back up the 200 plus steps to get other equipment.

Taylor and her friend showed me the spot they were guarding. I set up my Equinox 800. A few swings later I got a faint signal but the iD reading was stable at a #3. It just slipped through my sand scoop so, I reached into the sand with my hands. The tiny thin necklace was in my hand and it was barely visible.  Successful search with Taylor and her friend happy they took the time to call for help.

Man’s Gold Wedding Band Lost, Found and Returned Sunset Beach, NC

On Wednesday, Sept 22nd, I got the following text message, in part, from Ben saying, “Hi Jim. I found your site after I lost my gold ring. I lost the ring about an hour and a half ago in a wading pool near the ocean. Would you be able to come see if you can find it asap before the tide change? Thank you.” Knowing the tide table, he lost it right at low tide. I knew by the time I would have gotten there, his ring would be underwater, with an incoming tide and out of reach of me trying to find it. I called him and got some additional details. Luckily, other than losing his ring, he did everything right as far as knowing exactly where he lost it. Unfortunately, he had to leave town for a work meeting, but we agreed I’d meet his wife, Katie, on the beach today at 3 p.m. and she could show me the exact spot. The last thing I asked him to do was pace off the distance from a stationary object at the top of the beach to where he lost his ring and text me the steps. A short time later, he sent me the paces and the starting point.

Today, I text Katie saying that I was going to be there a little early. I also told her that with all the information Ben had given me that there was no need for her to meet me. Ben had mentioned that he and Katie had an 11 month old, so I didn’t want her to have to worry about the baby just to point something out to me. I paced off the distance Ben had given me and started a west to east perpendicular grid search from the beach to the surf. I met a couple of ladies that had been there to help Ben and Katie search for his ring the day before and thought that they were east of where I was searching. Within about 10 minutes, Katie, her baby, and her mother showed up. Katie also thought they were a little more east than I was searching. So I moved east and changed my west to east search to a east to west search. After about 45 minutes, I got the tone and numbers I was looking for on my Equinox 800 for a man’s gold wedding band. As soon as I got the signal I looked over at Katie, who was standing about 20 yards away with her mother and baby and gave her the “I got it” look. I think she froze where she stood and didn’t take her eyes off me. After 2 scoops, Ben’s ring was lying on top of the sand. I picked it up, washed off the sand and turned around to face Katie, holding the ring up for her to see. She was overwhelmed and her excitement alerted the entire beach that something was going on. She ran over to me, wiping the tears that were rolling down her cheeks. Being just a small part of that kind of excitement is exactly why I do this, there’s nothing better. I took the attached picture and sent it to Ben, with no text. He immediately responds saying, “Hey Jim, I am on a plane and get texts but no pics. Did you find it??” Katie and I agreed that I’d just send him “Wait till u land!” It was kind of mean, but he seeing his wife holding his ring would make it all worth it. It wasn’t long before he sent “Yesssss!”

Mary was out near a soccer field in Arlington, Virginia when she lost her very special white gold diamond dinner ring that had once belonged to her mother 10 years earlier. It had been in the family for nearly a hundred years! The ring held a 2 carat center diamond surrounded by 16 smaller diamonds (8 on each side) equaling approximately another 2.5 carats.

As Mary was putting on her soccer gloves on the grass while leaning up against a tree, she noticed that she was wearing her mother’s beloved dinner ring that meant so much to her. She inherited the sentimental keepsake a decade earlier and didn’t want to lose it.

Not wanting to wear the ring while playing her favorite sport, Mary took off her jewelry and placed the ring in her soccer bag that was on the ground beside her. Then, not feeling comfortable with her decision, instead, she chose to give the dinner ring to her coach for safekeeping. Mary reached into her bag, pulled out the ring, squeezed it between her gloved fingers and proceeded to walk 40 feet up a small hill in the direction of where the coach was standing.

Just as Mary was about to give the ring to the coach, she realized that the ring was no longer between her fingers. The perplexed woman searched everywhere but she couldn’t find her cherished piece of jewelry anywhere. After the other soccer players had finished on the field, she called her teammates over to help search for the missing ring. 10 players in all got down on their hands and knees with the hope of finding the family heirloom, but sadly no one was able to bring relief to this terribly upset woman.

Over the course of the next three days, Mary, her teammates, friends and husband all searched over 8.5 hours and nothing turned up. Chris (Mary’s spouse) tried finding the ring with a metal detector. His idea was to test another white gold ring before taking it out to the field to search for the missing ring. Once he recorded the numbers on the detector screen, he used a rented Garrett Ace 300 in his quest to uncover the family heirloom. Unfortunately, when he came to the field to search for the ring, he just couldn’t find it anywhere. He said he was getting « a lot of false alarms ». The target numbers were jumping all over the place and he couldn’t make any sense of what he was hearing and seeing on the machine’s screen. Chris gave up after hours of detecting and discovering nothing but frustration.

This is the part of the story when I come in to the scene. While I was diving for a lost ring in Baltimore, Maryland, I received Mary’s phone call requesting help in finding her lost ring. She found my information while Googling « how to find a lost ring in the grass ». She found The Ring Finders website which pointed her towards my metal detecting service in Arlington, Virginia. I was on a break when Mary went over all of the details with me and I told her that I would be happy to help her in any way possible. She told me that she would continue searching for the ring during the night and if she still couldn’t find it, she would request my assistance. Well, as it turned out, Mary and Chris had no positive news for me and so I scheduled with the couple to meet them out at the Arlington, Virginia soccer field later that night.

As soon as I arrived at the park sometime around 10pm, I immediately had the couple walk me through all of Mary’s steps from start to finish. Then, I got my gear out of my vehicle and began the search. I gave Mary and Chris all the confidence in the world that if the ring was still out there in the grass, I would surely be able to find it for them.

I first started near the sidewalk and grid searched the section where Mary put her gloves on. There were a lot of opposing signals due to all of the metal just below the surface, so I swung my coil slowly and methodically. The ring wasn’t anywhere in that particular area.

Next, I searched the section of grass leading up the hill in the direction of the soccer field. Still, there was no diamond ring to be discovered – just a lot of trash. My next plan of action was to detect the area where the soccer field sideline was located. I gridded back and forth, hoping to get the signal that would point me down towards the ring. Still, nothing turned up.

My last area to search was a section that was a bit farther away from where Mary and Chris had pointed out all of the possible places where the ring may have gotten lost. It really was the last piece of turf for me to scan before having to do a perpendicular grid and start the search process all over again.

Though I didn’t use my traditional grid line method with special markers, I knew that my imaginary lines were accurate and precise. These were small sections of property where Mary may have dropped the ring so I really didn’t need the cones or tapes.

As Mary and Chris made additional comments and suggestions in the background, I continued swinging the 15 inch coil at the end of my machine until I hit a really good sound and number on the detector. I had analyzed many different targets prior to this one, but this particular one got me excited! There’s nothing like the moment when you hear a familiar signal from past searches, then kneel down to investigate further and there the little guy appears between the blades of grass, stacks of leaves or granules of sand! That is what was about to happen once again at that particular moment! I took my pinpointer out to ‘question the « suspect » ‘ and zoom in on the excellent signal. And yes, there deep in the grass, my handheld detector led me right to the most beautiful piece of white gold and spectacular diamonds! I couldn’t have been happier for my client! I found the jewel! It was approximately 10 to 15 feet farther over from where Mary pointed out her original whereabouts. Thankfully, the ring had not been spotted by a stranger and taken away! The family heirloom was still there after 3 days, settled at the bottom of the grass and desperately waiting for its rescue!

I carefully picked up the ring, placed it in my pocket for safe keeping and then excitedly made my way towards the couple to surprise them with the most wonderful news! Believe me, Mary’s excitement was completely off the charts! Chris was in a state of disbelief! The two of them celebrated with me the return of this incredible piece of jewelry that had an irreplaceable story attached to it! I’m sure that that soccer field never witnessed such a cheer from the three of us on that unforgettable summer night as we all embraced and gave thanks to the Lord for the return of such a priceless heirloom!

Engagement Ring Found in 50 Tons of Corn

It wasn’t a needle in a haystack, but a ring in a corn « play box ».  I was contacted by Sarah who said she lost her engagement ring while playing in a large « play box » of corn at Lakeland Orchard and entertainment area. We had to wait a couple of weeks  until I became available to look for it and we were worried because this is public recreation area. When I arrived, I was amazed at the size of this paly area. Sarah was unable to meet me so she sent her mom to show me the area she thought she lost it. I arrived before the mom but the owner of the center had already showed me the general area. As I began to search, I had a great signal in about 2 min. The corn was about 18 inches deep and kept moving like quicksand as I used my pin pointer. I used my beach sand scoop and after a few scoops I found the ring.

I sent a photo of the ring to Sarah and she was amazed I found it so fast. When her mom arrived, I handed her the ring and she just began screaming with joy. I just love returning jewelry and seeing the smiles on the owners faces.

*** Omar had been walking his dog at Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach, CA. He was in ankle beep water when his dog got excited as another dog got close to them. In the strugglers control his dog, his gold wedding ring came off his finger disappearing intel the surf. 

Four days after the loss Omar came across my contact information on TheRingFinders website. He was unable to meet me at the location but his screen shot of the larva was clear enough for me the do a search. I was able to do a two hour grid of the beach the next morning. The ring didn’t show. 

When I reviewed the screen shot photo, I realized I had searched the wrong location. This wasn’t the first time. It’s always preferable to have the person meet me at the location. Many times it’s not convenient for the person who lost the item to get free from other obligations.

When I returned to the correct area at the next morning’s low tide, I was able to find the ring after about a half hour into my grid search. I sent Omar a text with a photo of his ring. He met me an hour later so we could get the ring back where it belongs. He was amazed and promised to get the ring resized.

Tim’s iPhone 11 Once Again Back on Shore…And still works!

Tim and Chrissy Beyond Relieved that Tim’s Valuable Smartphone was Recovered by Diver Brian Rudolph

While I was diving for a lady’s engagement ring and wedding band in the Middle River at Maryland Marina, located in Middle River, Maryland, a gentleman named Tim had lost his iPhone 11 off his boat nearby.

Tim walked up to my dive spotter, Jason, while I was underwater and asked him if he could chat with me. Once I ascended to the surface, Tim explained to me that he was stepping onto his boat on the other side of the marina when his iPhone fell out of his pocket and dropped down into the water.

The distraught gentleman then asked if I was available sometime during the day to dive in his boat slip and attempt a search and recovery of Tim’s lost smartphone. I was happy to help the fellow out.

As it turned out, my dive time was cut short that day based on the quantity of boats that were coming into port that afternoon. So, after packing up my gear, Jason and I hauled my dive equipment over to Tim’s slip to setup for my next search.

When I got over to Tim’s boat, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he was dating a woman named Chrissy whose family owned the marina. I had already connected with her very kind father because of needing permissions to dive at the marina. Chrissy’s family members have been extremely supportive and encouraging regarding my recovery operations off their docks.

Once I got all of my gear back on, I stepped onto the swim deck of Tim’s fantastic boat and descended down his boat ladder. Next, I grabbed my underwater metal detector from the deck and headed down below to seek out the gentleman’s smartphone.

Tim, Chrissy, Jason and two other friends of the couple waited above with anticipation as I searched the water below. The depth was less than 10 feet with zero visibility (very common in the Maryland and Virginia areas).

I used a down line that Tim supplied which we tied to one of his tie offs on his boat closest to where he dropped the phone. This helped me to remain oriented as to where I was positioned down below. After picking up a few random pieces of metal that I detected with my Excalibur 2 metal detector, I encountered an excellent signal that sounded similar to other cell phones that I had previously found in the deep.

Convinced that this particular signal could very well be Tim’s iPhone, I took out my pinpointer and detected the exact location of where the target signal was coming from. Then, I reached with my hands to grab the object and it was at that moment that I was confident I had found the missing phone! The shape of the target felt like a smartphone and it also had the weight of one as well! Carefully, I ascended towards the surface with the item in hand.

Before the others could even see my dive mask, they saw the phone in hand as I slowly emerged from the water! There was a resounding applause and a huge feeling of complete relief felt by Tim and Chrissy! They were extremely grateful for my successful recovery of the phone!

I was so happy to recover Tim’s very important piece of property! The best part of the story is that after the phone had been submerged underwater for 6 hours, it still worked perfectly! Once news of the recovery hit the ears of the owner of the marina (Chrissy’s dad), I was proud to have earned a few extra points with Chrissy’s dad, the owner of Maryland Marina!

What a wonderful afternoon it was to help out this very sweet couple!

Lighthouse Wedding Ring Found! – Lakeshore State Park, Milwaukee, WI

Sunbeam Kids, Inc. is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to projects that make it easier for kids and families to volunteer together. Its Lakeshore State Park Clean Up event September 19, 2021, on the shores of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, was a wonderful Daddy-daughter opportunity for Wauwatosa resident, David Jadin. The weather was picture-perfect also.

David and his family only recently moved to the area from Green Bay, Wisconsin, to start a pediatric dental practice in Elm Grove, PlayWell Pediatric Dentistry. Sunbeam Kids is their main charity partner. And so it was a most-appropriate outing for David and his little girl.

The volunteers first assembled together for a group photo not far from the historic 1872 Milwaukee Pierhead Lighthouse. After photos were taken, David knelt down in the grass with his 4-year old little girl and applied sunscreen lotion to her little arms and face. In the process he removed his 18-karat yellow gold wedding ring and tucked it lightly between his sock and shoe for safekeeping. It was his intent to retrieve the ring promptly, not to leave it there. The ring was precious, having been blessed by David’s childhood priest growing up and who was now passed. Shortly, they commenced a 3.5 mile walk together along the Lake Michigan shore, picking up trash along with the other Sunbeam Kids volunteers. It was a memory-making event. But it wasn’t until he and his daughter got back to the car that David realized, to his horror, his ring was missing!

I received a text message from David late Sunday afternoon and arranged to meet him on location by the Lighthouse. When I arrived, David was on his hands and knees combing the grass where the group photo had been taken earlier. We quickly traced his initial activities and the route he and his daughter had taken when they started out. Using my XP Deus wireless detector, I was immediately assaulted by an abundance of metal in the ground, evidence of nearly 150 years of visitors. Tuning my equipment for a recent loss close to the surface and for high-grade gold, I was able to filter the cacophony of signals and listen specifically for David’s ring. In my mind, I was preparing for a long evening; after all, three and a half miles is a long way!

Beginning in a low-laying area with longer grass, I proceeded to eliminate the spot where the group photo was taken. Barely 5 minutes had gone by when a distinct signal invited investigation. Parting the grass with my foot, there lay David’s ring! And the smile and relief on David’s face tell the rest of the story!

Thanks, David for the privilege of locating and returning your wedding ring! The story of your Sunbeam Kids outing with your precious daughter is one I’m sure will be told many times. I for one, will be reminded of your story every time I see the red Milwaukee Pierhead Lighthouse. And I wish PlayWell Pediatric Dentistry in Elm Grove, WI. every success in the years to come!

Ring lost in the bushes found

Dayanne was walking her dog in her apartment complex, when a simple body turn to look behind her, made her gold ring fly off her finger and into some thick bushes that line the walkway (as you can see in the photo). She actually saw the spot where the ring went into the bushes, but, even after clipping away some of the leaves and branches to get access it still couldn’t be located. I initially started with a large coil to hopefully get the depth I needed to locate the ring deep inside, but, it became apparent immediately that another method was needed. I instead put on the 6″ coil and rechecked the area where I could get deeper down inside the bush. I got a nice 15 signal on my Equinox, smiled, and pulled out my pin pointer to poke down into the bowels of this sticker bush. Carefully reaching inside and locating the signal with the pin pointer, I zeroed in on the target. Even so, it was still invisible and took 3 tries to grab it in the dead leaves at the base of the bush. A happy Dayanne put the ring back on her finger. A pleasure to meet you, and thank you for the reward.

Mens Gold Wedding Band Lost & Found in The Sea At Highcliffe, Dorset

Tony & son from Hampshire were leisurely swimming in the sea at Highcliffe but unknown by Tony his wedding ring which he’d be wearing for 41 years had slipped from his finger! It wasn’t until returning to his car he realised making its possibly whereabouts more difficult. Upon reaching the beach with Tony I was not hopeful. The stoney beach often draws rings down & out of reach for most detectors but this was far less a daunting task than perhaps detecting the sea where it most probably lay. After 40 minutes detecting the beach the sea was our last chance.

With a steep stoney drop into the sea and a sea bed moving under my feet the search seemed almost pointless. The waves were piling down right where I searched giving false signals & constantly moving the bed. Suddenly a faint signal.. carefully I tried to remain over the spot & donned my goggles. With an almost clumsy scoop I collected a pile of stones from 4 feet of water & made my way to shore thinking it would be a aluminium fragment?

With Tony watching I caught a glimpse of his disbelieving eyes as from where the stones were spread  I removed the ring! This I feel was one of the luckiest recoveries I have ever made & thank my lucky stars. Tony was very grateful & still slightly amazed to have the ring back & has made a generous donation to the Margret Green Animal Rescue charity.
