You never know what kind of call you’re going to get next in the world of recovery diving and metal detecting.
This week, I had just wrapped up finding a lost engagement ring for a very relieved couple when my phone rang. I answered, and a voice said urgently, « I lost my keys in the bay in Avalon, New Jersey — can you help? »
I was less than 20 minutes away, so I loaded up my gear and hit the road.
When I arrived, the guy explained they’d been kayaking near the public ramp. As they approached the dock, they tipped a bit, and in the shuffle to stabilize, the car keys — including an electronic fob — slipped right out of a pocket and into the bay. The water wasn’t too deep — about waist high — but murky and full of debris, making it nearly impossible to see anything.
We narrowed down the likely drop zone, and I started a systematic grid search using my underwater metal detector. These kinds of recoveries take patience. There are lots of false signals, and the muddy bottom can hide things well. But after about 20 minutes of searching, I got a strong hit — and just like that, the keys were found!
Everyone was thrilled. You could feel the stress melt away. Losing your keys while out on the water can quickly turn into a nightmare — no way to get home, call a tow, and deal with reprogramming everything. But not today.
They were able to unlock their car, start it up, and leave Avalon with all their belongings back in hand.
These moments are why I do this — not just finding things, but restoring peace of mind. Whether it’s a lost ring, phone, or keys, every item tells a story, and I’m proud to help bring those stories to a happy ending.
If you’re ever in need of recovery services in the Avalon, NJ area (or beyond), don’t hesitate to reach out. Quick response and professional recovery can save your day — just like it did for these guys.

Cerria contacted me via text on October 15th requesting my help to help recover a ring she lost throwing the football around with one of her sons a few days ago. She mentioned « I lost the ring in my yard. I was wearing two rings on the same finger. I found one that landed and rolled on the concrete…this was a heavier one. The other, I have had not any luck finding and assuming the ring landed in the grass. I’m devastated. It’s a thinner gold ring with diamonds. » We agreed on a time to meet on Friday AM, October 17th. Like a good detective. I always try to ask good questions and had Cierra recreate the activity. She suggested I look in the same area where the heavier ring was found. I looked thoroughly…The grass was sod and very, very thick. I expected the ring be a « surface » find but stuck and hidden under the heavy grass. I recovered the ring about a foot off from the edge of the driveway where she was throwing the football to her son. Cierra was more than happy with plenty of smiles to go around.
