I was asked to be interviewed by Ann Nyberg a celebrated and award-winning anchorperson for Channel 8 news in CT. We discussed my start in detecting 37 years ago, my membership in three CT clubs Nutmeg Treasure Hunters, Yankee Territory Coin shooters, and Southern New England Relic Hunters and most recently my membership in the @theringfinders,com organization. Ann asked my favorite find over the years and there’s been so many that it was hard to choose just one. But I chose a very meaningful one for me that was about a young boy losing his heirloom Grandfathers ring in the ocean and giving up hope until his mother contacted me and after three tries of narrowing the location where he had been playing catch in the ocean and using his hand drawn treasure map , I was able to locate the ring. His mother cooked a meal for our club, and we awarded the ring back that night and she honored me with a beautiful St Anthony medal.
I received a call from a young husband and new father saying that his wife had recently lost her ring in their backyard.
I drove out to their lovely Craftsman-era rental in Berkeley after work and went to work. This young couple, tired in their new roles as parents, were distraught over the loss of the ring.
When looking for lost items like rings, it is important that I get all of the information before beginning my search. Where were you sitting/standing when it fell off? What were you doing? Where did you hear it land or bounce?
We all believed it was most likely under the porch and that when it flew off of her finger it hit the deck and slipped between boards. I spent several hours under the deck sweeping away leaves, clearing out wire, nails, and other metal odds and ends and yet I could not locate the ring.
It was getting dark so I offered to return on the next available day as they were heading out of town. The following Tuesday I was back out and determined to find it. On this second trip I knew I had to think outside the box. I sat on the porch where she had been sitting when she lost the ring, imitating her movements from that evening, and even spent a little while under the porch again, this time with her help. During the week between my visits the Meyer lemon trees in the planter at the end of the deck were trimmed back a bit making it easier for me to really get in there with minimal pokes and pricks from the thorny branches. The planter was rotting and there were many gaps for items to fall into so I concentrated on these areas. I was running out of options and I really hate not being able to successfully return an item that I am called out to find. Digging through rotted wood, leaves and the odd ping pong ball, I reached down and pulled out this beautiful gold ring.
In the end, it was less about having a metal detector, and more about perseverance. People often think it will take mere minutes to locate their lost items with a metal detector. Many people give up within the first 20 minutes and I have to encourage them to let me keep working. Sometimes they leave me, thinking they will never see their precious item again. But if the item is there, I will find it.
Logan and his father were adding gravel to his rear driveway and spreading it with a front end loader and shovel during the work, Logan noticed that his wedding band was missing. Logan also mentioned that he recently lost some weight, and the ring was fitting very loose. So perfect scenario for a ring to slid off.
I started searching where Logan was laying the gravel in his driveway. I had a lot of junk signals. There were a couple of iffy signals in about 5 to 6 inches deep. I moved to the next location where Logan was reworking the right side of the driveway. On my fist pass here I got a solid signal 2 inches down using my pin pointer to find the target I brushed the gravel away and the silver ring appeared. He was so happy that it was found to say the least, I love mt hobby.

I received a text from Barry inquiring about my services. I asked him to give me a call and he told me he was working on a chicken coop when he took off his wedding band at subsequently lost it. As luck would have it I was able to head out that later that morning hopefully before it started baking outside as we have been having a brutal heatwave.
I pulled in and met Barry who showed me what I had to work with. On the drive down, I was thinking about all the interference I was going to have from the chicken wire and how to try and work around it. My hunch was right, there was a lot of wire in and around the ground and as luck would have it the sound it emitted was similar to that of platinum.
I began to work with a small coil and very low sensitivity in and around the coop with no luck. Barry started to help by clearing some of the weeds and vegetation to allow us to see better as my machine was going crazy from the wire. After a fairly thorough search and while Barry was working around the coop I started to work the yard around the coop and to the garage area. Nothing…there was only one other area that I needed to check and that was a small section of the front yard where he had been petting his dog. I explained to Barry that I would check all of those areas and then get out my Minelab Manticore with the 2D screen. I was hoping that maybe in the midst of all the wire I might get a dot on the screen. Well that was not needed – as I went out to the front yard and began my search I almost immediately got a pretty good sound and using my pin-pointer parted the grass and clover revealing lost wedding band.
Barry was excited and also surprised that I found it in the front yard. He was sure if I was going to find his ring that it would be in the back around the coop. Barry took off inside to tell his wife the good news. He soon emerged and we chatted for a while which is one of the most enjoyable parts of a successful search. As always it was a pleasure to meet another kind and generous client and recover his special ring.
Today’s excursion took me to beautiful Madawaska area. Received a text from Emily yesterday afternoon about her loosing her custom made engagement ring, while vacationing with her whole family at a cottage near Madawaska. She was swimming in about 10’ of water when disaster struck. Her beautiful emerald/diamond platinum ring slipped right off her finger. Quick thinking, a couple of guys grabbed a buoy, a rope and a rock and marked the approximate location where she was when the ring fell off. After multiple attempts at snorkeling/diving, they could not locate ring. After arriving and getting situated, got suited up on my Scuba gear and with he help of my underwater metal detector, I started searching for her ring. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a sandy bottom, turned out to be your typical Ontario lake condition with silt. Once the silt at the bottom gets stirred up, visibility went to zero. But, with patience and proper gridding, thirty minutes later, I was able to find her ring for her. Emily’s reaction was priceless. Another happy ending. Life is good!
Today’s travel took me to Lake Scugog. Received a text from Doug this morning about his son having lost his gold wedding band while vacationing at a cottage on Scugog lake. Carson was swimming with his dog and while trying to pick him up, he felt his ring slip off his finger in about 5’ of water. His ring was custom made, with gold from his grand father’s ring. The good news is that he had a good idea where the ring slipped off and the bottom had barely any weeds and not too much silt to contend with. Was a quick recovery, perhaps fifteen minutes, and Carson was extremely happy to get his ring back on his finger. Another happy ending. Life is good!
Bob’s Got His Smile Back……
While out doing yard chores Bob went into an allergic sneezing frenzy. Falling to the ground he eventually was able to stand up and went into the house to get a cool drink. While enjoying cooling down he noticed his dental post missing. He ran back out and looked around but couldn’t see it and wondered where it went. While on the phone I said it was me Vs. the tooth fairy. While laughing he said he’d rather have his dental post back instead of money under his pillow. On site I started a grid search in the area where he remembers falling down. The ground was very clean with no junk signals. About 10 minutes into the search, I got a good signal and detector meter read of a very small, shallow item. Moving the grass around revealed Bob’s dental post compressed into the ground, probably from him walking or falling onto it he said. Happy he was to get his smile back and happy that the tooth fairy won’t be visiting tonight!

Kevin was swimming twenty-five feet away from his dock when his gold and platinum ring slipped off.
After packing all our equipment and a 90-minute drive, my divemaster and I arrived at the lake. Although Kevin had a good idea of where he lost the ring, it’s always more difficult without close landmarks.
I used my circular search device, which unwinds a metered amount of line. Within 50 minutes we found it!
