Beyond the Backyard: A Cypress Wedding Ring Recovery
Tim’s call came in with a familiar tone—hope mixed with frustration. He explained that he was looking for someone to help recover his lost wedding ring, which had disappeared in the backyard of his home in Cypress, Texas.
The day before, Tim had been in the yard throwing a ball for his Labrador retriever, enjoying a normal afternoon at home. On one of the throws, he felt his wedding ring slip from his finger. Tim told me he distinctly remembered seeing a brief glimpse of the ring as it flew straight up into the air before he lost sight of it completely. Despite searching on his own, the ring was nowhere to be found.
The following day, I arrived at Tim’s residence and began a detailed grid search of his backyard. With no clear direction of travel and no visible clues, every inch of the yard needed to be carefully checked. Although the search was thorough, it produced no results. Still, Tim remained confident—he knew what he felt, and he knew what he saw.
Based on Tim’s account of the ring’s trajectory, we decided to expand the search area beyond the original yard and into the neighboring property. That decision made all the difference. After carefully scanning the adjacent backyard, the metal detector gave a strong, unmistakable signal. Hidden in the grass was Tim’s wedding ring—well concealed, but right where the physics of the throw suggested it might be.
Handing the ring back to Tim was the best part of the job. What began as a moment of loss ended with relief, gratitude, and a powerful reminder that sometimes answers lie just beyond where we first think to look.
Another ring recovered—and another story with a happy ending

Not every recovery takes place on a beach or in a lake—sometimes the lost treasures are hiding just a few feet from home.
I received a call from Gabriel in Houston, who was understandably anxious. The previous night, during a heavy rainstorm, his wife stepped out of his truck in their driveway. As she reached to swing the door closed, her loose-fitting wedding ring slipped from her finger and vanished into the thick grass along the side yard. Despite hours of searching on their hands and knees, the ring seemed to have disappeared without a trace.
When I arrived the next afternoon, Gabriel walked me through exactly what happened. The grass was deep and wet from the rain, the kind of ground where a small ring can easily sink out of sight.
Just a few minutes into the search, a solid signal rang out near the area Gabriel suspected. A quick sweep of the pinpointer, a gentle push through the grass—and there it was, his wife’s wedding ring resting just beneath the surface, hidden by the blades.
The look of relief on Gabriel’s face said it all. Moments later, he placed the ring back into his wife’s hand, and you could feel the weight of the moment—one more memory preserved, one more sentimental treasure recovered.
Always a privilege to help bring these stories full circle.

Texas A&M Class Ring Recovered from Murky Tiki Island Waters
Today, Houston Metal Detecting Services successfully reunited a 1985 Texas A&M class ring with its rightful owner—Tim, a Colorado resident—after it spent the last several months buried beneath the murky waters of a residential canal on Tiki Island.
Back in March, Tim was visiting friends on Tiki Island when the unexpected happened. While standing on the second-story deck of the home, tossing chips to a flock of eager seagulls, Tim said he felt his ring slip off his finger mid-throw. He watched in disbelief as it arced through the air and disappeared into the water, about 25 feet out from the balcony into the canal below.
Despite making several attempts to retrieve it himself over the following days, diving into the canal’s zero-visibility water, Tim quickly learned that the bottom was a thick, mucky mess—making the task next to impossible.
Months passed. Unsure whether recovery was even feasible, Tim contacted a local metal detecting club in the Galveston area, who referred him to Houston Metal Detecting Services, recognizing the technical difficulty of such a recovery: deep open water, zero visibility, and a silty bottom.
Tim and I spoke about the challenges, and he mentioned he was planning another visit to his friends’ home on Tiki Island. We agreed to meet that weekend to evaluate the area. A bottom probe revealed a 2–5 inch layer of soft muck resting atop a firmer base—making the ring potentially recoverable with the right equipment and precision technique.
With a plan in place, the actual search took place today. After carefully marking the suspected drop zone, suiting up, and working methodically through the silted bottom, the unmistakable ping of the detector confirmed what we were hoping for: Tim’s class ring was still there.
The ring was successfully recovered and, as the attached photos show, Tim is once again the proud owner of his cherished 1985 Texas A&M ring—and he’ll be taking it back home to Colorado as a symbol of both Aggie pride and persistence.
Another recovery complete. Another story added to the adventure.

David reported he had been out on his property feeding the bass in his stocked pond when he lost his class ring. David said as he was throwing the feed out into the pond, his ring slipped of his finger and flew out into the pond. David said he immediately marked the area where he was standing when the ring flew off, knowing he was going to find a way to get his ring back.

Joseph said, he returned the following day with a long section of PVC pipe and a snorkeling mask hoping to probe the bottom of the lake and find his Frisbee…
Well we can see by the story being posted here, Joseph lost his wedding ring in his effort to rescue his Frisbee…

Finding Lost Texas A&M Class Rings in College Station, Texas
Texas A&M Class Ring Lost in Creek during classroom exercise in College Station,Texas (found) by John Volek
I was contacted by Ryan from College Station, Texas regarding his lost Texas A&M Class ring…Ryan stated while out on a fishery conservation class he had the misfortune of loosing his class ring. Ryan said, he and classmates were capturing some fish in the creek as part of the classroom assignment, and during that process he lost in ring somewhere in the creek.
Ryan indicate he believed the water depths of the creek ranged from a few feet to possibly eight foot deep in the center of the creek. I made arrangements with Ryan to meet him the following week to search for his lost ring.
Knowing the depths and terrain, I felt pretty confident the ring could be recovered with the right personnel, gear and equipment…I contacted my dive partner Carl…we looked over the details of the recovery and set out the following week to recovery Ryan’s ring.
Once on site, Carl drew the short straw and had to gear up for the underwater side of this search…I would be taking the shallower waters around the deeper portion of the creek.
Once Carl was set-up and underway, I began searching the edges of the creek…I pulled up a few possible signals (fishing lures, and a few bottle caps) before hitting a very distinct signal in about 4 1/2 foot of water…I pulled up a scoop full of rocks and other debris, along with a nice Gold Texas A&M Class ring.
I feel pretty confident Ryan and his father were shocked on how fast we were able to recover the ring!
