Two Rings Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

I received a call from Dmitri yesterday regarding two rings that he had lost the night before. He and some friends had gone to the beach after dark, when Dmitri decided to go for a swim. Wisely he removed his two rings, and placed them on his shirt while he went in the water. When got out he went up and picked up his shirt, and remembered too late that his rings were there. He and his friends searched around for about an hour with no luck. Dmitri searched the internet, and found me through The Ring Finders web sight. We decided to meet as soon as I could get there.

When I got to the beach Dmitri and his family met me to show me the area he believed the loss to have taken place. The problem was that it was dark when the rings were lost, so being able to identify the exact area was very difficult, so I figured we would search quite a bit outside of the box. As I began, I was finding quarters and dimes, which to me was a very good sign that no one else had been through there. Also it did not look as though the county had cleaned the beach that morning which also made me more hopeful for a successful search. I continued to expand the area as Dmitri pointed out in pictures they had taken when they were there in the dark. I know how discouraging it can be for those we are trying to help when we keep pulling up bottle caps, pull tabs and miscellaneous coins, but Dmitri seemed to keep a positive attitude while I continued my search. After about 3 hours, I began a search along a ridge of sand just outside of the area I was shown by Dmitri, and got another good signal, but this time there in the sand was gold. I reached down and picked it up, Dmitri’s ring, then offered it to him. He was looking right at it but seemed a bit bewildered by the fact that it was actually found at first. He took the ring, then a few more scoops, and we had his second one. The word he said to his wife when he showed her the rings was, « Magic ». It sure is magic to see the smiles on the faces of those who have lost what they believe they might be lost forever, when it is handed back to them. Great day! Dmitri was camera shy, so I got to hold the rings for the blog.

In the evening, I decided to swim in the ocean at Santa Monica beach. I left my rings on my T-shirt and after swimming I took it so abruptly so the rings fell in the sand. It was already dark, so I spent an hour trying to find them but it was not possible. I tried to take a picture of the place and views to be able to track this place. In the morning, I looked up in the Internet where I can buy or rent metal detectors, but all of them must be only shipped.

I had to be quick to start searching since other people could also find them. So, I googled the website theringfinders.com and read all amazing stories about wonderful results of their search. I found Steve Smith who covered our area. His reviews we excellent. He helped many people in the same situations, so I immediately called him.

Steve promptly asked me questions about the location, and we met in less than 2 hours. After identifying the area, he started searching. He found a lot of coins and can caps. He told me it was a good sign because it meant nobody was there, and there was a big chance the rings were still in the sand.

After 3 hours of searching, we went all over again, taking wider area into consideration. And suddenly at one more sound of metal Steve dug the sand and there found my ring. The second ring came right after it. They were around 5 inches deep in the sand, so obviously, they could not be found without Steve’s help. Steve said you should never give up while searching things in sand and he was absolutely right! Thank you, Steve!

Diamond Heirloom Ring Lost in Corona, CA…Found And Joyously Returned.

I received a call from Jason yesterday who had lost his ring while doing yard work that morning at his house. The ring had a diamond that had been given to his father by his grandmother. His father then had it made into a ring to be passed down to successive generations. Jason was the first to have received the ring in succession, and had looked forward to passing it to his own son. He had mowed his lawn, and also cleared a lot of his flowerbeds of leaves and debris, and in the process realized his ring was missing. He was concerned that it might be in the flower beds, or worse, in one of the trash cans that were scheduled for pick up. He said he would be there if I came right away, so I left immediately.

When I got there Jason took me to the area he had cleaned, which also had the trash cans there for inspection. I decided to search the cans first to eliminate them as a possibility. We took the first can and emptied its contents on the pool deck to search. I spread out the leaves and the thick green grass from the freshly mowed lawn, and began my search. Nothing in the leaves, but then in the grass, which had been at the bottom of the large can, I got a good sound. I took out my pin pointer, and began to move the thick grass around looking for the metal I heard. There deep in the grass appeared Jason’s ring. He was so happy, knowing it could have been lost forever if it had gone out with the trash. What a great smile!

iPhone Lost at Venice Beach, CA…Found and Returned.

Was doing a little metal detecting today at an unfortunately well groomed beach. When I got there the sand looked as though it had been gone over with a dragged 2×4 it was so smooth. I wanted to do a little dry sand detecting, but after a few hours and very little to show, I decided to head back to the parking lot. On my way a couple of young ladies came up to me and asked if I had a metal detector (which I happened to be carrying at the time). After I showed it to them, they explained that one of them had lost her iPhone the night before, right in the towel line. I told them how the beach had been groomed early in the morning and it was highly unlikely that the phone was still there. That is when they told me that it was showing up there on the Find My iPhone App. When they showed me I decided to help them out.

We walked over, and they showed me where they had been the previous night, so I began my search with them explaining what they had been doing. I searched everywhere they showed me with no results. They then told me they had to leave, and would probably have to get a new phone. As they walked away, I am thinking, « Wait it is showing it is still here ». I kept up my search, I had not gotten their number or any other information, but continued on. I got nothing anywhere they had showed me, so I started moving out of the box, expanding my search area. I was actually out about 50 feet from the original position when I got an overload signal in my headphones. I dug carefully with the scoop so as not to damage the phone if this was it, and there it was. I showed it to some of the people around who had helped her earlier in the day, and then the phone started ringing. It was the young lady who had lost the phone. Apparently they were able to see that the phone was now moving, and knew someone had found it. They asked me to drop it off at the Lifeguard station and they would pick it up later. The nice Lifeguard took my picture for me. Glad to have made another person’s day.

Wedding Ring lost in Malibu, CA Mountain Backyard…Found and Joyously Returned.

I was eating breakfast this morning when I noticed an email come in on my phone. I read that it was from Rosalie. She told how she had just gotten married yesterday, but her ring got lost in the backyard. She and her husband had their sweet little puppies as their ring bearers. The rings were tied, one around each of their necks with ribbons, and they were supposed to come to them during the ceremony to deliver the rings. The problem with puppies is that they are puppies, and they have a natural desire to play, and play they did. When they were supposed to deliver the rings, they began to rough house around the back yard; « wrestling » as Rosalie put it. When they finally got control of the dogs, they noticed that the ribbon on the one who had Rosalie’s ring had come untied, and the ring was gone. They and their wedding party searched for the ring, but to no avail. I got right back with her, and arranged to meet in a few hours.

When I got to their house they showed me the backyard, which was not very big, and explained what had happened. I had a few questions. There were some clumps of high grass, and a type of deep clover. It looked as if it would be a simple search, until I began, and realized that there was a lot of metal under the dirt. I searched with my standard coil with no luck, then switched to more of a sniper coil, and went over the yard again, still no luck. About this time I could see a look of resignation in Rosalie’s eyes, thinking the ring was gone for good. I then switched my program, to eliminate all iron from sounding and went over the yard again. This time I got a good signal next to one of the clumps of grass, put the pin pointer in, and it started screaming in my ears. I moved the grass around, and there was her ring. I looked around for her and noticed she had gone in the house, so I put the ring on my pinky finger, and put all my gear away. I then went over and knocked on the door. Rosalie came over, and I told her that I have finished my search, at which time I could see a slight downcast demeanor come over her. At that time I then lifted my hand and showed her the ring stating that is because I found the ring. Needless to say, there was instant joy emblazoned all over Rosalie’s face, as she exclaimed to her new husband how I was able to find her ring. What pleasure to be able to bring such joy to people, and what a great day it was today!

Custom Silver Ring With Black Diamonds Lost at Marina Del Rey Beach, CA…Found and Returned.

Greg’s wife called me tonight about her husband’s lost ring. They had been enjoying themselves at the beach. Greg had taken his ring off, and put it into the cup holder of his beach chair while enjoying the sand and surf. Not thinking of the ring, when they were ready to go Greg’s wife folded up the beach chair, and the ring was gone. She felt very bad about what had happened. They found me on the internet, and I said I would come and help them, but they said the local police patrol was going to try to locate a detectorist the police thought they saw earlier. I told him, no problem, but if they could not find the guy to call me back, and that I was going to eat my dinner. About 20 minutes later Greg called back, the other detectorist must have left for the day. I told him I would be there as soon as I had finished my dinner, so he gave me directions.

When I got to the beach Greg met me to take me out to the area of the loss. They had stayed in the spot (very important), and had marked off an area they thought the ring may have fallen into (very helpful). I turned on my White’s Surfmaster PI Dual Field, and began my search. I made one pass, turned and got a strong signal, put the scoop in, and retrieved a bottle cap. I showed it to them, a little disconcerting I know when they are expecting to see their lost ring, but I feel the people I search for need to see everything I find. I took a couple more swings when I got another good signal. This time I pulled the scoop out and it looked like I had found real pirate’s treasure. This was a big custom silver ring loaded with black diamonds; real cool. Greg and his wife were so happy to see his ring, and lots of joy was restored today.

Gold Wedding Ring Lost in San Fernando Valley, CA Backyard…Found and Returned.

I received a call from a young lady yesterday who explained that her husband lost his ring in the backyard. I had been waiting for a call back from someone, so I arranged to meet on the next day. The person did not call back, so I called them back and said that I could go immediately. They told me that it had been late at night, and the husband had been taking the ring off and putting it back on when he dropped it on the deck. When the ring hit the deck it was too dark to see, but they heard it roll to the edge, and then it was gone. They had searched that night, and then hours the next day to no avail.

When I got to their house, I was led to the backyard, and shown a nice new deck that had been built over a very steep hillside. I began my search at the top working around some metal that had been there. and then working down the hillside. I worked as much of the hill that I believed could have caught the ring on a downhill roll, but just came up with nothing but deck screws and nails, with the occasional beer can. I felt that I had completed a thorough search, but did not find the ring, so I went back to the deck, and sat in the area of the loss, contemplated and discussed the loss again with the husband and wife, that is when the wife said she thought it might be right where I began my search. I decided to remove the wires that were there, even though I did not know what they were attached to. As soon as I removed them the husband said that’s it, and I saw the slight glimmer of gold peeping out of the dirt from under where the wires had been. I removed the ring and carefully replaced the wires, with shouts of joy coming from them both. They asked that I did not identify them, but I will say they were very happy that the ring was found, and I will vouch for their smiles. It was explained to me that their rings had been sent to Brazil to be blessed by a priest before the wedding, and specially engraved, so how do you replace that? Another great day!

Diamond Wedding Ring Lost in Mission Viejo, CA…Found and Returned.

I received a call from Anna last Wednesday for a lost diamond wedding ring. When I spoke to her, I asked the most important questions, and when done it was decided that the ring should be in the yard where she had been sitting with her husband. She had given the ring to her husband while they were visiting her cousin. When the day was done, she asked her husband for the ring, and it was gone. I arranged to meet the next morning to do a good thorough search.

When I got to the house, Anna’s cousin showed me the area which was a pretty good patch of grass which could hide a ring easily. I proceeded to search, and searched the whole area only finding some bottle caps. I went and got another detector with a better recovery, and searched it again, nothing. I knew the ring was not in that yard. Anna’s cousin had left for work, and Anna’s God Daughter stayed with me, also named Anna. I spoke to young Anna, and explained that there was no way the ring was in that yard, and that we should back track every where they had been the other day. She showed me a patch of grass that led to the pool, which seemed like a good search. I began my search there, and had it almost complete, when Anna’s God Daughter came running up saying she found it! There in her hand was a beautiful 3 diamond ring. She had taken my advice to retrace their steps, and while I was searching the grass, she went to where they had been parked 3 days earlier, and there on the asphalt under a car was Anna’s ring. Amazing! Sometimes we can help by just thinking things through for people. I have helped people find their rings just by talking them through the loss, and it ends in the same way, joy for the person who thought that what they had lost for good was found again.

Diamond Wedding Band Lost at Manhattan Beach, CA…Found and Joyously Returned!

I was on the road last night about 9:20 PM when I received a call from Chelsey. She had lost her wedding band at the beach earlier in the day. She had gone surfing, and wisely took her ring off and left it in her beach bag. When she and her family were getting ready to leave she noticed that another piece of her jewelry had fallen from the bag. She then picked up her towel, and shook the sand from it, the ring was gone. I wasn’t far from the beach, and told her I could be there in 20 minutes, she needed more time, as she was at dinner with her family, so we arranged to meet at 10:15 PM at the beach.

I was waiting as Chelsey and her family rolled up. There was about 7 of them, and we all made our way down to the spot of the loss. Well it was dark now, which made it harder to judge landmarks, so we had to widen the search area. The other problem was that the tide was super high, and as I searched the water would come up and wipe out my grid lines, so I had to pay close attention to where I had already searched in order to cover the area correctly. Chelsey and her family also brought along lights, sifters and colanders to continue the search they had begun earlier. The humor entered into it for me as I looked around, yet I did not say anything until the ring was found, that it looked like a Paleontology convention as everyone was spread around on the sand with their lights and sifters delicately searching for Chelsey’s ring.

I searched for about an hour, moving further out, and closer to the water than they had told me, and could see at times that there was concern that I should be staying in the area they felt sure of, and I understand that feeling. I have been doing this long enough though to know that sometimes the ring isn’t always where the person thinks it is, so I usually persist, and work out of the box, or color outside of the lines so to speak. Well I decided to work much closer to the edge of the slope down to the water when I got a real good signal in the head phones. I dug, and in the scoop was Chelsey’s ring; 11:30 PM. I lifted it up, and was immediately stormed by the entire family, who lined up to give me a hug. WHAT GREAT JOY RESTORED! What a great opportunity to be a help; love it!

Gold Masonic Ring Lost at County Line Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

I was on my back home from finding the earring earlier when I received a call from Jeff. He had been surfing, but had brought the ring he had received from his late grandfather with him. So as not to lose it he put in his tight fitting wet suit. He came out of the water and began to remove the wet suit, when the ring popped out and landed in the sand. He searched for about an hour, but was unable to find it. He then searched the internet, and found me. I was about an hour away, and told him I was on my way. He had time constraints, seeing his friend was getting married tomorrow, and he had to be at the rehearsal later in the evening.

When I got there Jeff led me down to the spot of the loss. He had piled stones to mark it, and it assured me that we would be able to make a quick recovery. I could see that some of the shrubbery had been moved around, and the sand had been piled up in the center of the area. I proceeded to search where Jeff thought the ring may have landed. It wasn’t there, so I worked my way back. I searched the pile of sand where it looked like Jeff had done most of his  own searching, it wasn’t there either. I then started to work back almost behind where he had been standing when I received a good repeatable signal, dug once and missed it, dug a second time and in my scoop was a nice big gold Masonic ring, the ring he found among his grandfather’s belongings after he had passed away. This was so important to Jeff, a precious memory of his late grandfather, who he had just found out was a Mason , which also meant a lot to Jeff. I could tell the pride he had for his grandfather, and this made for a wonderful recovery. Also he still had time to make the rehearsal.

Tiny Diamond Stud Earring Lost in Backyard in Los Angeles, CA…Found and Returned.

Lisa called last night wondering if I would be able to find her daughter’s diamond stud earring. I inquired as to where and how it was lost, and of course how long ago. Apparently her daughter was playing volley ball in the back yard when she went up against the net. At that time her earring hooked in the net and pulled off of her ear. She saw it fly off and land in the grass, but found searching for it an effort in futility. The loss happened about 45 minutes before Lisa’s daughter found me on the Internet, and the call was made. We arranged to meet today at about 11:30 AM.

I arrived just a bit early, and was able to park and enjoy the coffee I bought at the fast food restaurant on the way. I called Lisa to let her know I was outside. She led me to the area of the loss. They had cordoned off the area her daughter saw the earring fly into with volley balls (nice touch). The thatch was good and thick, perfect for hiding jewelry. I then asked to see the twin to the lost one. When Lisa showed it to me, I got a bit concerned; it was so small my pin pointer could only barely pick it up if I touched it, and my detector could only pick it up at about 1 inch. I proceeded real low and slow checking every faint sound. I then got a nice faint repeatable  signal, and went in with the pin pointer and my fingers, gently moving the grass around when I saw the thin pin shaped shank of the earring. I grabbed it, held it up, and handed it to a very surprised Lisa. This was a very precious item for her daughter, and she was very happy to know she would be able give it back to her. A real nice beginning of the day.
