This recovery all started when I got a call from the ‘Ohana letting me know that a chain and pendant had been lost in the water at Poka‘i Bay. I was down the road when I got the call, so I quickly gathered all my gear and headed out to help.

When I arrived, I talked with Triton who is the brother of Mercedess and learned where they believe it was in the ocean and that one of our local lifeguards Mike Eckart had jumped in the water to help. I powered up my equipment, hit the water, and began working a few grids. After talking with the mike and covering the area, I finally got a solid tone — and there it was, right inside my scoop: a beautiful gold chain and pendant.

With a loud “CHEE-HOO!” I held up the scoop, and the kids who were showering and getting ready for a party started yelling, “Did you find it?!” I proudly held up the gold chain and said, “I found it. What was lost is now found.”

Mercedess walked down to the edge of the water and gratefully got the chain out of scoop. The beach was full of joy, and it was such an awesome moment to be a part of.

Mahalo for allowing me Mike to be a part of returning something so precious. What was lost is now found. Much love.

Lost Platinum & Diamonds Engagement Ring at Lanikai Beach…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a call from Avery who was on vacation from Orange County, California and enjoying the day at Lanikai Beach.  So her mom Julia had taken off her rings to apply sunscreen on her and her sister Kindle.  When she finished and moved to another area on the beach they must have fallen out of her dress.  I told them I would pack my gear and head over but they had already left the beach.  They turned around and decided they would wait at the beach for me so they could show the area to hunt.  Lanikai is quite an extensive beach.  When I arrived I was blessed to get the first spot near the beach access as a car was leaving.  That never happens!  Since losing the ring earlier in the day the tide had come up and the area was now wet but the surf was calm.  Julia drew a box in the sand and I started a grid search.  No ring.  She called Kindle & Avery over and they thought I should be hunting more to the North.  I started way farther down the beach and worked my way back.  Found a brand new nickel which I thought would be the ring.  Then finally in wet sand I got a nice #7 on the Manticore.  In one scoop there was Julia’s stunning ring in the scoop with a huge diamond glistening in the sunlight.  She was obviously overwhelmed,  I think she was holding back tears.  There were two more rings in this loss but an expanding grid search they never came up.  I went all the way to the waters edge and low tide mark but no luck.  We guess those may have been eyeballed by someone earlier in the day as Julia and her girls went to a different area of the beach before they realized the rings were gone.  They are platinum with diamonds around one of them if someone can come forward with them that would be awesome.  Julia was obviously pleased to have her diamond ring back on her finger.  Aloha to Julia, Avery & Kindle!

Lost Gold & Diamonds Wedding Ring at Lanikai Beach…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when Nikki from Aiea, Hawaii reached out to me on the Metal Detecting Oahu Facebook page.  I posted my number and she called immediately.  While at Lanikai Beach with her children she had taken off her Engagement and Wedding rings and put them in a puka of her beach chair.  After returning home she realized she had left the rings in the chair and when she went out to retrieve them the Wedding Ring was gone.  She looked everywhere she could think of with no luck.  Her only conclusion is it must have fallen out at the beach when she folded the chair.  We decided to meet at the beach to ensure I hunted the exact spot in the dry sand.  We had a little difficulty parking but finally were able to start the hunt.  I started an East-West grid search and after covering the area thoroughly I only found a piece of aluminum.  Nikki was sure we were in the correct spot so on a whim I adjusted to a North-South grid search.  Boom!  A sudden 9/10 on the Nox and after four scoops Nikki’s beautiful Gold & Diamonds ring was in the scoop.  I walked over and pointed in the scoop.  She shouted with joy and it was all she could do to hold back the tears.  We hugged and I noticed her Pittsburgh Steelers keychain.  Turns out although she is from Michigan she is a staunch Steelers fan.  Soo happy we had a successful hunt.  Remember boys & girls the 90 degree adjustment in the grid search made for a successful recovery.  This has happened a few times especially in Waikiki sand.  Aloha to Nikki!

Lost Platinum Wedding Band at Lanikai Beach…FOUND!!!

This Ring Find began on 15 September when I got a text from Jean from Los Angeles, California and was on vacation on Oahu.  It said, « I lost a platinum ring at Lanikai Beach last Saturday 09/10 at 1-2pm while snorkeling in 6ft deep water (tide is low intensity sand hard and water clear but could not find it…maybe it is stuck in a coral hole.  Please let me know what of think) »  This was going to be a scuba hunt as during a high tide it could be 8 feet deep.  Jean sent some excellent pics of the area so on 23 September I commenced a scuba hunt after the jellyfish invasion the few days prior.  Man-O-Wars and Box Jellies are the worst at Lanikai!  The beach access turned out to be the extreme right side of the grid search so I started there.  As I worked my way north I detected the sand and did a thorough visual search of the top of each coral head.  The area was really sterile so not many junk targets to dig.  About 20 minutes into the dive as I was exiting a dense coral area I got a nice #9 on the Nox and in a few fans of the sand a Platinum Ring came into view.  When I got back to my car I texted a pic to Jean who was back in LA.  He asked if I could verify it had a triangle, heart and circle engraved inside the band.  Sure enough it did.  Jean didn’t want to chance losing his ring in the mail and asked if I could hold it until his return trip in December.  Well today Jean & his lovely wife Clemence arrived on island and Jean got his ring back.  Love the Texas hat.  Aloha to Jean & Clemence!

Lost Gold & Diamonds Wedding Ring on Lanikai Beach…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a text that said, « Hello Mr. Au-Franz my name is Louis. My wife Audrey lost her ring on Lanikai Beach today on our honeymoon. We were wondering if you were available to look for it? Thank you very much. » I immediately called Louie and he told me that him and his lovely wife Audrey were on their honeymoon from North Carolina. Audrey had gotten stung on her wedding ring finger by a Portuguese Man-O-War in the water. When she came ashore, she removed her wedding ring and put it on her pinky finger. Then her and Louie gathered up their beach gear and were headed back to Waikiki where they were staying. Suddenly, while walking down the beach access path Audrey realized her ring had fallen off her pinky. She wasn’t quite sure where but took note of their surroundings. Louis did a Google search for lost ring and he said my newspaper article from 2021 came up and along with « The Ring Finders » and that’s when he reached out with the text. I told Louis I didn’t want much time to go by as Lanikai is heavily detected. We agreed to meet first light at 5AM the next morning. They actually arrived at 4:30 and I’m sure that was from the anxiety of the lost wedding ring. It was pitch dark but I had my headlamp and we proceeded down the beach access path. Audrey showed me where she discovered her ring missing. I said lets start where you were packing up your belongings as that would be the most likely spot. When there Audrey drew a grid in the sand as I shown my headlamp so she could see where she was at. The grid was quite large but very flat and easy enough. Thankfully, Lanikai is very clean with very little trash. The targets actually surprise you. The first target was a pull top and then a part to a pen. Next I found a 5 Euro Cent and asked Louie if it was his as he is from the UK. It wasn’t! Next I got a nice « 13 » on the Nox and in one scoop I had the target. I peered into the scoop with my headlamp and saw a tiny shiny gold band with three little diamonds in the bottom. I yelled over to Audrey & Louie and said, « This probably isn’t your ring as it’s outside the grid. They came over and exclaimed, « Oh my gosh that’s it! » They both said « Thank You, for saving our honeymoon. » That’s why I love this hobby so! Aloha to Audrey & Louie!

LOST WEDDING RING WAIKIKI FOUND!

Mid morning I receive a phone call about a loss wedding band in Waikiki from Anjelica. I let Anjelica know that I will come out and help find the ring when I get a break from work. She expressed her gratitude and I gathered as much information as I could to narrow the search site. I then get a phone call from her husband Patrick who was the one who actually lost his wedding ring. We spoke and I gathered a lot more information and that was enough for me so I  decided to stop what I was doing at work and head out to meet up wit Patrick and Angelica. I gathered all my gear and headed to waikiki beach. I meet the couple on the beach and they both express their gratitude and let me know the area of where they believe the ring was lost. I started my grid outside of their area because there was surf and there was also a lot of current. During the search I dug a bunch of different targets that got everyone’s hopes up… including the local family on the beach who’s younger daughter decided to take it upon her shoulders and put on her goggles and help look for this precious ring. After 30 minutes and countless targets I get a familiar sound and I start to dig it with my XTREME scoop. I put on my mask and snorkel and deep in the back of the scoop there is a gold ring. I remember Anjelica telling me the ring is inscribed inside with her name and his. And low and behold … inside the wedding band is both their names! I picked my head up out of the water and noticed Anjelica is 10 feet away from me. I walk over to her and lean over and whisper “it’s a Cartier? And her eyes lit up like the beautiful sunset and with a loud shout she said “YES!”and gave me the biggest hug. I looked over at Patrick and gave him a thumbs up and the beach clapped and celebrated while we all knew what was loss is now found. Another great ending and beautiful day here in the islands.
