LOST NATIVE AMERICAN JEWELRY IN THE ALTADENA FIRE FOUND AND RETURNED

  • from Santa Monica (California, United States)

Felisha called me and asked if I could help her find some sterling silver Native American jewelry that was lost when her house burned down in the Altadena fire. It was very important to her because her late mother had handed it down to her. I told her that it could have survived. I met her at the site as soon as the weather permitted on the first clear day.  We’ve had a lot of rain lately. I shoveled and sifted after moving some debris and found all six of her silver bracelets and one of her silver chains. I also found a sterling silver pocket knife that belonged to her late  father. The search on the other side of the fireplace was a different story.  There were cat figurines and family china that were important to her but they were buried under plaster and chicken wire walls that had collapsed inward. I broke up the wall with a large crowbar and a shovel to expose the chicken wire. I used an electric cutting grinder to slice through the chicken wire then tossed 20 to 40 pound segments out of the way. I finally exposed some of the figurines, native American pottery and an old collectable tile. This was a labor intensive search. Digging for a couple of hours in a hazmat suit can feel like your in a sauna but the search was successful and Falisha was happy to be reunited with her prized possessions.

Bill contacted me about doing a search at his property where his home had succumbed to the fire in January. He was most interested in finding his wife’s wedding and engagement rings. We arranged a day and time to meet, and I was able to go.

When I got there Bill was already at the property. I introduced myself, and began asking questions, wanting to know where the rings had been, and where he thought I should look. His wife was on the way, but we got started right away. Bill showed me the area where he remembered last seeing the jewelry box, and we ran an estimated area of the search. I donned my safety gear, and began moving the big stuff out of the way in order to get to finer debris. When Bill’s wife Lourdes arrived, she came over to say that I was looking in the wrong area, and that I should be looking on the other side of the room. She showed me where she believed the rings should be. and that’s where I began. It wasn’t that Bill was wrong because there was a jewelry box where he remembered, but what he didn’t know was that his wife put her rings elsewhere. Knowing where to look is very important in these searches. I began working through the debris shovelful by shovelful, and noticed that Bill and Lourdes had left. Not long after, I found the wedding ring and placed in a container. When they returned Lourdes came up and asked how things were going, and I showed her the ring I found. She got very excited and hopeful that the other ring would be found. About 15 minutes later I was able to find the engagement ring, which pretty much made their day. They had lost everything, but I was able to help them find a precious memory, and bring a little joy back in their lives.

Chris contacted me about searching his home that had burned during the Eton/Altadena fire, we made arrangements to do the search.

When I arrived Chris and his wife Laura met me at our arranged meeting point, and they took me to their property. Driving through the area just makes my heart sink knowing how all of these people lost everything they had worked so hard for so rapidly. When we arrived they told me that the home was searched already by a Samaritan’s Purse team, but the wanted a more thorough search to insure everything that could be found was found. I searched 3 different areas, and was able to find 5 lumps of melted silver, one of Chris’ hand planes, a decorative anchor, and 5 small pieces of gold including a partial chain, and fully intact earring with gem. They were happy I was able to help, and I was thankful to be able to help as well.

TEACHER’S RETIREMENT SAVINGS TURNED INTO GOLD BARS LOST IN THE PALISADES FIRE FOUND AND RETURNED

  • from Santa Monica (California, United States)

I got a call the other day from Cecily, she was referred to me by mr Lin, who I had helped last weekend in the Palisades fire on Friday find some lost valuables, she explained that her  85 years old father who is a retired school teacher just cashed out his retirement account and put the majority of the money into gold bars. He put the  them all in a shoes box and put them on the top shelf of his closet, and there they sat until the apartment building burned to the ground in the Palisades fire. I met with Cecily near one of the police checkpoints  and followed her to where her mother and father’s home used to be, after putting on the hazmat suit, gloves and mask, I walked up the cement stairs  to the corner of the house where she thought the closet used to be, after about an hour of moving heavy metal and cutting through drywall chicken wire, I started sifting through the ash and debris, Cecily started give up hope, after another hour or so I shoveled  about 5 shovelfuls into the top screen, I paused and my eyes first caught the rectangular shapes, then there they were the glitter of gold. I called Cecily over, I pointed in the screen, and she said what is that, I smiled and said your father’s retirement fund, she screamed and cried, and called her parents right away with the good news, I kept digging and found 30 solid gold bars in total, everything that he had lost. My parents were both teachers, and I know what unsung heroes they were, so reuniting  these gold bars with her dad and saving  his  retirement meant a great deal to me as well as him and his family.
