The Perfect Birthday Surprise: Lost Gold Ring Recovered in Oak Forest

  • from Lockport (Illinois, United States)

On July 29, Michelle called to tell me that her mom, Cindy, had lost a gold ring in the backyard of her home in Oak Forest, Illinois—my boyhood hometown!

Michelle explained that Cindy had recently lost an impressive amount of weight. As a result, she was wearing a pair of snug-fitting jeans. While trying to squeeze her gold wedding band into her front pocket, the ring slipped from her fingers, struck the driveway with a distinct ping, and disappeared into the grass bordering the driveway.

For weeks, the family searched the yard without success. Finally, Michelle decided to throw a « Hail Mary » and contacted her local Ring Finder—me!—through theringfinders.com.

I made the drive to Oak Forest, where Michelle showed me the general area where her mother believed the ring had fallen. I unpacked my equipment and got to work, but it quickly became apparent that this search would be more challenging than I had expected.

The yard was littered with metallic targets—the remnants of countless backyard barbecues, pool parties, and years of family gatherings. Every sweep of the detector produced multiple signals, making it difficult to isolate the faint response of a small gold ring. To improve my chances, I lowered the detector’s sensitivity and dramatically slowed my sweep speed, carefully listening for any repeatable signal that stood out in the gold range from the surrounding clutter.

About 15 minutes into the search, I heard a promising tone.

I knelt down and gently parted the blades of grass. My pinpointer immediately locked onto a small circular object that had become pressed into the soil. I could tell right away it was a gold ring—but was it Cindy’s?

As I carefully lifted it from the ground, Michelle hurried over and asked excitedly, « Did you find it? »

I smiled, nodded, and replied, « I think this is it! »

Rather than spoil the surprise, Michelle called her mom and casually asked, « Mom, what did your lost ring look like? »

Cindy replied, « It’s just a plain gold band… kind of like the ring from The Lord of the Rings. Why do you ask? »

Trying not to give anything away, Michelle answered, « Oh… I was just thinking about going out and looking for it again. »

After hanging up, Michelle told me her mother’s birthday was just around the corner. She couldn’t imagine a better gift than wrapping up the recovered ring and surprising her with something she believed was gone forever.

There are few things more rewarding than reuniting someone with a treasured possession—but knowing this ring would become an unforgettable birthday surprise for Cindy made this recovery even more special.

Gold Ring recovered in Green Bay field

  • from Green Bay (Wisconsin, United States)

One of my students was walking his dog in a field and noticed his ring was missing.   He called me, and I covered the area he thought he had lost his ring in for an hour with no luck.   So, I widened the search and found it 10 feet from where it was accidentally flicked off!   Gold rings are heavy, and they do fly!    From frowns to smiles in no time!

Lost Gold Ring at Simco Park in New Westminister, BC

  • from Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada)

Over two weeks ago I was in touch via email in regards to doing a search at a park not to far from me,  for a lost gold band. Because of both of our schedules we didn’t meet up until this evening.

When I met with David he told me the story of where he thought the ring might be, but he wasn’t sure if it was there or not, as he felt someone could have found it or maybe it was lost some where else.

We discussed the search and I started to do my grid with the hope of finding his ring. This Ring was given to David by his father and he was going to wear it when he gets married this December.

I was into my grid search for 30 when I got a good hit on my V3I, I bent down with my pinpointer and after I moved the grass I could see the outline of his gold ring…

I was so happy that it was found and I called David and his girlfriend over and I have to say I have the best job in the world! I get to make people smile and I love it.

I Love My Job!
