When Danett was told that she couldn’t wear any jewelry to a recent procedure, she gave pause to whether or not to leave her ring behind. What would she do with her engagement ring? The item came with a proposal this last New Years Eve exactly 1 year after meeting her fiance.  It was brand new and very sentimental, and leaving it behind just didn’t seem right. Begrudgingly she removed her Platinum engagement ring and placed it on the night stand inside her studio…or did she?

I was contacted by Danett after my friend and colleague Jes past along my information.  Her Platinum engagement ring was missing and herself, her fiance, and a friend had all searched for the special item with no luck.  Things were getting desperate despite the fiance being very calm about it and the ring being insured.  I told her that I was glad to assist in any way I could and the following evening I headed to San Francisco for the search.  I brought all manner of tools and equipment not knowing what the search might hold.

Early on it was revealed that there were pets involved and I suspected they might have played a role in the missing ring.  I owe Angel, their dog, an apology.  I was almost certain he had possibly lapped up the ring. Detecting over his favorite potty spots cleared his name.

After an hour of searching the little studio, Danett shouted « I found it!!! »  The ring was in a cardboard ring box that once sat on the nightstand.  It was moved to a shelf during initial searches for the missing ring.  We had made the recovery!!!

Danett was very kind and sweet.  She had told me that she was extremely distressed about the missing engagement ring, but you would have never known it. She told me that my demeanor and confidence kept her calm and focused so we could smoothly and systematically search and that having a professional there soothed her nerves. Ultimately, the ring was found and that was the common goal we shared.  She was very happy to be reunited with her ring and I felt joy in play some part in the story this item now continues to tell.

My children and I established a Treasure Tuesday ritual in which every Tuesday we find some sort of treasure hunting/learning activity.  Sometimes it’s panning out pay dirt for gemstones, fossils, and even gold.  Some times we crack open geodes to reveal the crystals within.  In some instances we get out to metal detect a park, a field, a backyard. On one occasion we sought out stones to toss into the rock tumbler.  It’s been a fun and interactive way to spend family time with my boys.

This Treasure Tuesday I was requested to Oakley, CA to search for a missing wedding band lost during an allegedly wild backyard soiree.

Will had text me the prior day seeking out my services and availability. Permission was to be requested for access and the next day we would search.  It was a pleasant afternoon when I arrived and the scope of the area to be searched was much larger than expected.  The ring was known to be lost at the party, but exactly where in this large area was a mystery.  Luckily, as I started a grid search of one of the suspected locations, the home owner, who was wandering around the field along side of Will, was able to locate the missing ring laying on the surface.  We had made the recovery!

I did request to run my Equinox 800 over the ring to aid in my data collecting.  It was a solid 14 VDI in Field 2.

Lost Mens 14K White Gold Wedding Band, FOUND!!! Danville, CA

It was a Black Monday for the company and I was engulfed in an imaginative build-out of Duplo Legos with my boys.  The weather was worsening and it was only a matter of time before rain returned the the Bay Area.  I received a message from Leanne in Danville.  Her husbands wedding band had flown off of his hand in the side yard while preparing for the next round of storms to hit.  Help would be requested!

I enthusiastically called Leanne back and within 30 minutes, I was headed down the 680 towards the days search.  It was my hope to quickly get in and get out before the deluge began and I knew that with the information provided from the couple, this could be the case…they knew it was there and we just had to locate it.

Upon arrival, I met Michael in the drive.  He quickly filled me in of the events that had occurred the evening before and the search that ensued. After a lack of success, but not without effort, the couple sought out additional resources.  A family member sent them my information, hence my presence.

I started to grid the hillside where Michael believed the ring had flown off.  He helped by moving debris and pruning back dormant bushes to make way for the coil of my machine.  We found a lot on the surface, first a razor blade, a bottle cap, aluminum cans, a fastener, a AA battery, but not the 14K white gold band that we sought. About 30 minutes or so into the hunt, success!!!  We had made the recovery!!!

The couple was surprised and excited to have this sentimental ring back and there were smiles all around. The clouds opened up and the rain fell from the sky, I like to think they were tears of joy for my first ring recovery of 2023!  Happy New Years!!!

Steps to help find a lost ring…Found in Martinez, CA

Loosing a ring is very much more common than people would imagine and the loss of a ring can be very disheartening for any number of reasons.  It is perfectly natural and okay to freak out for a moment, but what you do next could mean the difference in recovering the ring or not ever seeing this precious object again.  The following are my thoughts as to what your best course of action should be should this happen to you.

Determine when and where the ring was lost.

  • Date
  • Time
  • Location
  • Activity
  • Note any land marks that may help get back to this location.

Call the experts and get help early

  • In most cases the earlier you can get help, the more likely there will be a positive outcome
  • Give the above information to your expert searcher

Retrace your Steps

  • Make note of possible locations and landmarks

  • Post a LOST flier in and around the area
  • Create a listing on Craigslist (Lost and Found) also don’t forget to look for FOUND listings while there.
  • Social Media may have lost ring sites like on Facebook
  • Contact local law enforcement (non-emergency) to file a report

File an Insurance Claim

On Tuesday the 11th of October, Matthew text me with a request for my services.  His fiance had accidentally flung her engagement ring into some thick brush in their yard in Antioch, CA.  The two searched the brush and were 100% sure of the location in which it was lost.

Being on another search when I received the call and knowing that the location was secure and therefor the engagement ring was safe, I agreed to a search on Thursday afternoon.  Matthew was great about giving me all the information he could in advanced.  He, nor his fiance, would be available the day of the search.  His father was to be home at the location and would be my point of contact.  The father and I had a nice conversation while I pulled my equipment from the vehicle and got set up.  I turned on my metal detector while we were speaking, I had not performed a noise cancel, nor had I even turned on/put on my headset.  While talking I swung my detector back and forth over the ground near the brush.  I noted the unmistakable tone I new I’d be looking for and looked at the screen to confirm the 7-10 VDI.  I bent down, and Bob’s Your Uncle there was the ring very near where Matthew said it would be.  The whole search took 30 seconds and…We Made The Recovery!!! The ring now has a renewed life and great story for the happy couple.  I wish them great luck with their future!

Lost Diamond Studded Nose Ring…Found in the East Bay!!!

On 9-14-2022 at approximately 9 pm, I was contacted by an individual looking for someone to search his vehicle for a lost diamond studded nose ring.  The individual knew that he had misplaced the item within his vehicle but was unable to recover the item on his own.

It was another 4 days before our schedules aligned to perform the search using a video endoscope.  I searched, unsuccessfully, for quite a while and was about to call it off, but opted to question the individual one last time.

An important new detail was revealed in that he had thought that he put the nose ring in the drivers side door pocket.  He and I had both performed an inspection of this pocket by touch and nothing was in the pocket.  In the name of being extremely thorough, I scanned the pocket with the video endoscope and found that the door pocket itself was made up of two pieces and that there was a small crease between the two plastic door moldings.

The other thing we noticed was a strong shimmer of light reflecting back out of that crease, but how to retrieve it?

I popped the plastic door panel away from the door and out of the corner of my eye, sighted the tiniest of objects fall to the pavement. I never imagined how small it would be, but after a good hard search and just before the skies opened up with a heavy deluge…We made the recovery!!!

This call to service reinforced the fact that continuous questioning can often times lead to new and unexpected recollections that can ultimately make or break the success of one of these searches.

Extremely valuable diamond wedding ring almost ends up in landfill…FOUND!!

Michelle contacted me on the morning of the 24th.  A ring had been lost in a kitchen during a dinner party that Monday. Despite extensive searching by the family, and a plumber the ring had not been located.  Would I be willing to assist?

Always up for the task, I agreed to meet her at the home later that afternoon.  Not knowing what I might be facing I brought all manner of tools; my trusted metal detector, a video endoscope, long reach recovery tools, a selection of hand tools, etc.

I arrived to meet Michelle promptly at our agreed upon time.  As it turns out Michelle is a fun, positive thinking individual who serves as a personal assistant for our client (who wishes to remain anonymous).  Michelle told me a bit more about the back story and showed me a photo of the ring, a real Bobby Dazzler!

Garbage pick-up would be the next morning and the two of us decided that clearing the trash bins should be the priority task.  We emptied the trash onto a tarp and attempted to use the metal detector to search, however the plethora of metallic objects within the trash rendered the detector useless.  This would have to be a hands and eyes search.

Michelle and I kept a positive attitude during our less than appealing task and even shared a few laughs while searching.  We cleared 1 trash bin, and on to the next.  Just when we reached the last of the trash bags to search, I tore open a bag, stuck a nitrile gloved hand into it, and that’s when I saw the flash…we had made the recovery!

This recovery was a good reminder to me that although I have invested in a lot of special technology and tools, these are not always what is needed.  Sometimes what is required is just good old fashioned search techniques, persistence, and a positive attitude.  It also brings up another factor, seek help and call early.  Less than 18 hours later this very valuable ring could have made it’s way to a waste station or landfill and that would have been a real tragedy.

Ending on a positive note, I was very happy that the ring was recovered and to take part in the new legacy and story of this cherished item.

A few nights back, I had the opportunity to teach a client a little bit about metal detectors, metal detecting, and even provided this individual with metal detecting equipment while assisting with cleaning up debris from a recently demolished old shed!  Although there was not too much to find, I believe the individual really enjoyed their experience as well as the services I was able to provide.
