Lost Silver Irish Claddagh Ring Saved from the Sand at SoCal Beach

  • from Newport Beach (California, United States)

Call or text Stan the Metal Detector Man if you lose a ring in the sand.

… Rachael put her two rings in her shirt pocket and walked across the sand to set up her beach chair on the sand so she could watch the waves. Some time between where she parked her car and where her beach chair one of the two rings was lost. It had to be in the sand.

The missing ring was a silver Irish claddagh designed ring passed down to her by her grandmother. After discussing when she last saw the ring and what she might have done that caused the ring to fall out of the pocket. It could have been pulled out when she took her celphone from the same pocket.

I wasn’t looking foreword to gridding the 100 plus yards of sand back to the parking lot. Our best place to start would be where Rachael spent most of the time.  After a few minutes I got a great high tone from my metal detector with high numbers that are common for silver metal. Boom ! One quick dig with my xtreme sand scoop, I had her ring. She stood watching the search process and I was able to let her reach in the scoop to retrieve her very special ring. Happiness is having your ring returned after you thought it was lost forever. Rachael was a very happy lady to have her ring saved from the sand.

*** Jordan called me believing his platinum wedding ring came off his finger while digging in the sand with his daughter.  He and his family are on vacation in Newport Beach, CA.

We met on the beach as the tide was rising. The sand castle was still accessible to detect with my water proof metal detector. After about a half an hour the ring was not found. I asked a few more questions, specifically if he had been swimming earlier in the day.

He had been boogie boarding a couple hours before discovering his ring missing.  Even though he didn’t think it was lost while in the water at low tide, I told him I would come back later that night to search the low tide. Six hours later I returned that evening.. BOOM! successful recovery. I have better success finding rings lost while boogie boarding than I have from people that lose their rings while surfing or body surfing.

Jason was amazed that his ring was actually found where he thought he had still had it on after boogie boarding.

** Kevin called me while he was searching the sand for his wedding ring.. He said he had been at a Newport Beach location with his wife and young child. The had a small pop up tent for the youngster. He gave his silver wedding band to his wife for safe keeping. She put the ring in the small pocket inside the tent.

They left the beach returning home. That’s when they checked the tent for the ring. It was not in the pocket. Kevin figured the ring may have fallen in the sand when they picked up their beach equipment.

His call came to me as I was going to a doctor appointment. I had enough time to stop by to see the suspected area of the loss. I only had a minute to talk to him and assured him would return to scan the area he showed me.

When I returned two hours later, I did a preliminary search as there were too many people on the beach to be thorough. I did eliminate a major area except where other beach goers were set up. I don’t like to ask people to move, especially when the ring could be anywhere, in the sand, in the car, or the garage.

Long story short, I came back a 7pm and had the whole beach clear of people. After 20 minutes I had the silver ring in my beach sand scoop. I called Kevin and he was very excited. He told me that today was their 10th wedding anniversary. He wife was so happy.

Loren texted me and asked if it was possible to find his special ring he lost one week ago in Newport Beach. He had this silver ring made while he was in Spain, it has a depiction of his dog Otis on the face of the ring. Loren set his ring on top of a cooler for safe keeping but it fell into the sand during the day.

I told him I would try to find it, with the help of some photos of the area he provided it got me in the general area. The ring was a little out of my first search area but I found it after gridding for 45 minutes.

Clem and Denise has been on the beach Saturday night when Denise lost her new IPhone X and an expensive pair of prescription glasses. Clem called me Sunday morning asking for help using my metal detector.

This beach has a very efficient beach cleaning crew, so I was a little concerned that it may be too late.  They are are aware that the beaches are groomed daily. When I discussed that with Clem, he told me that the beach had only raked the upper part of the beach. He also told me that the “Find My Iphone App” was still pinging, which meant the phone was still there.

That information was good enough for me to get on the road to meet them on the beach. When I got there, Clem had a IPad that gave information the phone was still in the location. He didn’t understand how the app worked, so I told him to walk in the direction of of the blinking icon until his position was over the spot the gps indicated the area of the phone.

It still took about 20 minutes to find the phone. As a bonus the prescription glasses also showed up. What made this a great recovery was, these large items actually survived the beach rake. Some days the beach crew only rakes the beach and if the rake is not full of trash some items just fall through. Other days the crews run a super sifting machines that can get bottle caps, coins and rings. Every beach city has different schedules and cleaning procedures.

Denise was ecstatic and happy that her friend Clem had the presence of mind to call me for help. It was definitely a pleasure to help them, I was having second thoughts about searching for a cell phone lost in a high traffic beach goer location. The large phones don’t always hide under the sand.

Lost Platinum Wedding Ring at Huntington Beach in Sand .. Found after Owner Gave Up Search

*** Heather and Justin were at Huntington Beach, CA. for the day with their young daughter. As Heather was packing up their things her platinum diamond wedding rings slipped of her finger falling into the dry sand.

She and Justin couldn’t find the rings and it was getting late with the chilling wind also frustrating them. Heather called me asking if I was available to help them. Just as I was getting directions to their location. Heather said, “Oh! my husband just found the engagement ring. I will call you back in 20 minutes.”

It was a short phone conversation but I did know what lifeguard tower they were near and that the rings were lost in dry sand. I was sure that they were not going to be able to find the smaller ring with their fingers. I was out doing errands and didn’t want to drive home to wait for a phone call. It was closer to go to the location that Heather gave me. Surely, I would be getting another phone call.

Arriving at the upper parking area at Huntington Beach, I could only see one family walking off the beach pulling a wagon. Heather had not returned a call possibly they had found the other ring and left the beach? I decided to walk down to the beach to do some recreational detecting. That’s what I do most everyday.

Walking down the steps with my detector, I met the couple coming off the beach. The guy pulling the wagon looked straight at me then asked me if I could help them find a wedding ring. I told him,  that’s why I’m here. I am the guy your wife called about an hour ago. Right away Heather started apologizing for not returning the call she promised me.

We followed the wagon tire tracks back to the place on the beach where the loss occurred. Location and timing made it easy to find the platinum diamond wedding ring with a professional type metal detector. We had Heather’s irreplaceable original wedding band back where it belongs , the one that was put on her finger the day she and Justin got married.

It’s a shame that people walk away from lost keepsakes that can be found by a RingFinder. I can’t tell you how many times I been told, “I Didn’t Know This Service Existed”.. This time my experience with past searches that I would be needed to help find the elusive small ring. It hard to explain, I just had a gut feeling that I should go to the location even though I had not got a return phone call.

I got an email from Jeremy on Sunday night. He had lost his wedding ring at a sports park the day before in the grass, and was not able to find it. He had removed it, and placed it in the cup holder of his chair to apply sunscreen, a story we hear all too often for sure. I let him know I was available the next day if he could meet me to show me where to look. We agreed on a time, and the meeting was set.

When I arrived Jeremy was waiting for me, and took me right over to the area. He showed me what he had done, and how he had left the field, so I knew where I would be looking. Also knowing this was a relatively new field, I did not expect a lot of metal to be there (foil, bottle caps, pull tabs, etc). That was the wrong assumption for sure, it seemed like there was something almost every swing of the coil that I had to check. A lot of fencing from the field perimeter was in the ground, and giving off a real good signal. This made for a slow search, as I covered the area. I searched all that Jeremy had showed me, and it was now time to expand the search out of the box. I searched into one field with no results, and then went over to the other field, got a good signal, looked down, and there on the surface of some dead grass was the ring. It was white gold which reflected the true color of its surrounding, so it was pretty much camouflaged right in the open. Jeremy had to go back to work, so I called, and he came right over very happy for the recovery. As a member of The Ring Finders, it is a pleasure to create these smiles!

**** Ari’s mother Bryn had been on the beach with the family watching her grandson taking surfing lessons. She took off multiple rings setting them on her lap while applying sunscreen. Her wedding ring set and three other rings. One ring was her husband’s ring who had past away just a month before. Late that night after returning to their summer beach house, she realized that her rings must have fallen into the sand.

The next morning her son Ari was able to borrow a metal detector to search the beach. Besides not knowing anything about using a metal detector he had difficulty remembering where they had been sitting. Ari decided that he would try to locate a professional metal detecting service. He went online where he found my contact information. I was only a couple miles away so we met on the beach about 11 am. There were already many beach goers setting up their blankets and umbrellas on the beach. Making it difficult to do a proper grid search. I did a preliminary search not bothering the people set up on the beach.

Returning later that afternoon I set up a large search grid and after 2 hours I found the two ring engagement/wedding ring set. A few minutes later the other three rings showed up in my scoop. All rings very sentimental especially at this time of grieving over the loss of her husband.

The rings survived over 24 hours on a highly populated part of the beach that gets sifted by very efficient beach cleaning machines and the possibility that someone could have accidentally found the rings.

Knowing this beach well, I had a hard time staying positive about finding multiple rings in this section of Newport Beach. Another lesson for me to stay positive and be persistent.

**** Steven was very proud to be a part of a team that won the California State Lacrosse Championship this year. He was devastated when he lost his ring in the sand playing volleyball the day before contacting me.

Steven’s mother had located me and called me the next morning. The loss occurred at a private beach and it would take awhile to get entry to the beach access entry point. When I met Steven on the beach, he walked me over to the zone where he believed the ring came off his finger.

I looked at a 5 ft. square area that he had dug about two feet deep searching for his ring the night before. I was a little concerned that it buried out of detecting range. After setting up my detector I began my search. The “BIG” ring was found about 5 ft. outside the suspected search location. It was a beautiful ring and I could tell how much it meant to Steven when I presented it to him.

Another fun find that came with the privilege to see and detect on this awesome beach. Ringfinders get to go to some unique locations, it’s not just beaches. I can’t begin to share all the awesome places I’ve searched for lost sentimental keepsakes.
