1978 Gold Class Ring Found and Returned to Owner by metal detector specialist Brian Carpenter in Indiana, PA

I found this ring before the snow started to fall but had to wait until I was able to return the ring to its owner.

I had just put a new « SILVER » cherry picking program on my minelab manticore and was taking it out to test it. I decided to go to one of my spots I have hammered over the years as a true test. I started to comb the area and picked out a nickel on my first hole (the program does notch in nickel signals). I continued moving on and hit another solid 25 and figured it was another nickel. I turned my plug and to my amazement it was a gold 1978 class ring from the other side of the state. The bottom part of the ring was broken off but I was able to recover the small piece from the hole as well. I examined the ring and inside I found legible initials. From there in the field I got out my phone and googled the school district. A nice lady from the school answered but told me they could not help me. I was truly puzzled and I went back to detecting.

Once I got home I tried to locate a yearbook and initially was unable to do so. I did find an alumni page are reached out to one of the admins. He said he would help me. In the meantime I continued to search and did find a yearbook (finally!). I located the person I thought it was and conducted a google search and found contact information for the person. I sent them an email and then it was time to wait. After a short time the alumni site admin. confirmed my suspicions of the potential owner. Finally I received a response and they did lose their ring and until now had been a mystery as to how and where.

Unfortunately, returning the ring in person would not be possible. The owner lives on the west coast. So, at the owner’s request, I took a trip to the post office and mailed it back. While I love the reaction an in person return brings knowing I was able to locate the owner and do the right thing in returning it was more than enough.

While it is always a blessing to make a recovery for my clients this one and the last have been nothing short of miracles! There is no way I make them without some devine intervention and some additional help from St. Anthony and I pray it continues.

I was contacted by Alex who said he lost his ring after he slipped and fell in the snow. After he fell and got up his ring had disappeared in the snow. This was no ordinary ring…as you will see from the picture it was a monster gold ring with diamonds, maybe my largest recovery to date.

I met Alex outside of an apartment complex where he stated he lost his ring. It has been almost a week since he lost it and I had talked to a maintenance worker who stated that they had recently done some additional snow removal. Alex showed me the patch of snow he thought he had lost his ring. The maintenance guy stated that it looked like someone had fell in another area too. Alex was pretty sure he knew where he slipped but after almost a week he wasn’t entirely positive based on what the worker had said. I started to search the first area to no avail. There were some good sounds but when we uncovered the ground – nothing! I then moved to the other area the maintenance man mentioned and checked it. I was unable to locate anything good…there was a lot of interference from the sidewalk and other targets. I had been using my trusty Garrett AT Pro but thought it might be time for the Minelab Manticore. Maybe the 2D screen could provide some additional help. I hit the area again but with negative results. In the meantime Alex was trying to get in touch with his friend to get some more information about the area we should be concentrating on. I was becoming frustrated that I could not find it, from Alex’s description of the ring it should have been screaming in my headset like I was at an AC/DC concert. After we had moved snow, checked the area thoroughly several times I was deflated. I started to check some other random areas where I had yet to look. I went on the opposite side of the sidewalk and overtop of about a 5 foot snowpile. Towards the top of the pile I got a sound but it wasn’t overwhelming. None the less I was like what in the heck could be in the top of the snowbank. I got out my pinpointer and started to search and there I could see the glint of gold. I could not believe my eyes. I said to Alex there it is…at first he did not see it. Then he looked again and we pulled it out of the snow.

Alex was estatic to say the least and I was in disbelief. Based on my observations the maintenance worker must have scooped it up on his shovel and deposited it where we found it. Hence, my opening, there is no way I make this recovery without some extra assistance! As always it was great to make a (miracle) recovery and meet another kind and generous client.

I was contacted by Joshua who stated his wife had lost her gold wedding ring in the snow in front of a house in Pittsburgh. They were visiting from New York  and the ring had fallen off of her finger outside of their car. I was able to make plans to search for the ring the next morning.

I arrived to find out that while the ring was lost out in front of the house it was along the street rather than in a driveway. I met Joshua who showed me where he had parked. Two days had passed and of course they had been searching and people were moving snow as they shoveled out parking spaces and sidewalks. I inspected the area and my heart started to sink. This looked next to impossible. On the curb next to where they had parked was a neighbor’s garbage to include a trash can, an old air conditioner and what looked like a stack of old shelving. Just as an added bonus to what looked like an incredible task was the fact that the temperature was in the single digits.

I started to search, got a pretty promising sound and began combing through the snow. I forgot to mention this was an old cobblestone street. As I got down under the ice I found an copper penny in one of the cracks on the roadway. I was starting to prepare for this to be a VERY long haul. I started to move around the car and to the area of the neighbor’s trash. As I moved around the plastic trash can I got another pretty good hit. I got out my pinpointer and it was a relatively small target. While removing the snow to find the target I caught a glimpse of gold that disappeared back into the white fluffy snow. I dug down and finally there it was – the ring! I hate to say it but I was in disbelief. I have said it before but this was nothing more than simply devine intervention!! I had only been searching for about 20 minutes or so when I found the ring.

I took the ring to the house and gave it to Joshua. He was amazed and very happy that I recovered it. Then I found out they were newlyweds and had been married for just a week. They were returning to New York the next day. As always it was a pleasure to meet another kind and generous client and return their lost ring.

After one of the massive snowstorms that covered the country recently and hit Pittsburgh pretty hard I was contacted by Donquia who had lost his keys in front of his house. Donquia said he slipped on the front steps and his keys went into the snow. We made arrangements for me to come out the next morning.

I arrived in the area to find only a small path on the street in front of Donquia’s house to be plowed and the rest of the area was nothng but piles of snow and plowed in cars. With nowhere to park I left my truck sitting in the middle of the street, got briefed by Donquia and got started. He was pretty sure he went one way and the keys went another. I started to sweep over the snow with a few hits but no keys. I then had to drive around the block as someone needed to get by on the roadway. When I came back I parked in the street again and started on the opposite side of the steps. After a few minutes a nice sound came through my headset. I started to dig with my snowshovel and jackpot, I found Donquia’s keys!

I was happy to find Donquia’s keys relatively quickly so he could get to work a bit later. As always, it was a pleasure to meet another kind and generous client and recover his lost item.

I was contacted by Matt to see if I could help him locate his lost tungsten and gold wedding band. Matt said he had lost it in his yard cleaning up leaves. This is a common occurrence this time of year. I told Matt I would come out and we agreed on a day and time. Later I would find out that Matt lived three and a half hours away from the property to be search. It added a little bit of pressure as this was a significant time investment on his part.

I met Matt at the property and got the scoop on what happened. Matt was full of good news, the ring was mostly black, it could have been in a variety of places from in the yard to the wooded areas behind his house, he had cut the grass at some point and there was a large area in the woods where he had actually spread the leaves out by hand rather than dump them and leave them in big piles. He was really upset by the loss as he had only been married a short time before this happened. Matt also informed me he had bought a metal detector and invested significant time in trying to locate the ring using the detector. Unlike many people I have to give Matt credit, he invested in an Garrett AT Pro, the same detector I usually use. He had also spent some time doing research and had some knowledge in how to use it.

I looked around and taking all of the information into account was beginning to believe I was in for a VERY LONG day. I asked Matt where he thought it might be and he put me onto a few places he had dumped stuff in the woods behind the house. I started to look getting some directions from Matt – you are up too far, over this way some, yeah that is where I was. Then Matt went down the hill to look on his own. After about 10-15 minutes I was working my way down the path to search another patch of woods and I got a sweet sound. I did not see anything though. I got out my pin pointer and rooted around the side of a tree branch that was across the path. BAM! I moved some of the leave pieces and dust out of the way and there was the ring tight up against the branch. I felt a huge sense of relief. Matt had cleared a portion of this area from the leaves but the dust and pieces that he left behind were just enough to keep it hidden from sight.

I called Matt up from where he was searching. Without telling him that I found his ring I placed it on the ground and told him when you find your ring this is what it will sounds like. Matt started to run his detector over the spot…then it hit him…it was HIS ring. He picked it up and was overjoyed and in disbelief that I found it both where I did and so quickly. I was amazed as well, a little devine intervention if you ask me, St. Anthony strikes again.

It was a pleasure to meet another kind and generous client and recover his lost ring.

Lost Ring – FOUND! at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh by Metal Detector Specialist Brian Carpenter

I was contacted by Kai to inquire if I could find his ring after it was lost during an event at the university. He said he had lost it in a grassy area between some of the buildings the night before.

I arrived and looked at the area to be searched. Pretty standard grassy area and Kai was certain it was in a specific spot. I started to seach and within 10 minutes I was able to locate the ring in the grass. Kai was very happy to get his ring back and as always it was great to meeet another kind and generous client and recover his special keepsake!

I was contacted by Jill who stated her mother thought she had lost her wedding ring while weeding. Her mother was throwing the weeds over an embankment behind her residence and thought her ring flew off. When I initially spoke with Jill the ring had been lost for about three weeks. I was unable to make it out the same day she called me to search but assured her I would make arrangements to look.

A few days later it worked out that I was able to search for the ring. I drove out the residence and met Jill’s mother, Peggy and her dog Missy. Peggy explained to me that her husband had passed away and how important the ring was to her. She did not see the ring fly off her finger but she was pretty certain it was over the embankment. They had searched with a metal detector that they bought and also enlisted the help of a neighbor without any luck.

I looked over the embankment and it was overgrown with weeds and tall grass. I took a few steps and realized that all the vegetation was hiding just how steep the bank was. So I started my grid down and back up the hillside taking note of how far I was down. I was thinking that maybe I had not went down over the hill far enough so I was prepared to have to go further down. I was there working my way though the forest of vegetation when all of a sudden I heard that sweet sound of gold. I had seen a picture of the ring and it was very big so the hit I got was loud and steady. I parted the weeds and looked down and there was the ring….sweet success!!

I climbed back to the top of the hillside and Peggy came out to meet me. When I showed her the ring she was stunned and began to shed tears of joy. It was readily apparent how important the ring was to her. She thanked me numerous times. Before I had started to search she had told me how her dog Missy could do all kinds of tricks. I told Peggy that if I found the ring she could have Missy do a few tricks; so Missy got to perform and was very impressive.

Now that the pressure was off as the ring was found there were a few minutes to chat. It is very interesting to hear the stories of rings that are found and all the other important details that the clients like to share. As always it was great to meet another extremely kind and generous client and reunite her with her treasured keepsake!

I received a text from Barry inquiring about my services. I asked him to give me a call and he told me he was working on a chicken coop when he took off his wedding band at subsequently lost it. As luck would have it I was able to head out that later that morning hopefully before it started baking outside as we have been having a brutal heatwave.

I pulled in and met Barry who showed me what I had to work with. On the drive down, I was thinking about all the interference I was going to have from the chicken wire and how to try and work around it. My hunch was right, there was a lot of wire in and around the ground and as luck would have it the sound it emitted was similar to that of platinum.

I began to work with a small coil and very low sensitivity in and around the coop with no luck. Barry started to help by clearing some of the weeds and vegetation to allow us to see better as my machine was going crazy from the wire. After a fairly thorough search and while Barry was working around the coop I started to work the yard around the coop and to the garage area. Nothing…there was only one other area that I needed to check and that was a small section of the front yard where he had been petting his dog. I explained to Barry that I would check all of those areas and then get out my Minelab Manticore with the 2D screen. I was hoping that maybe in the midst of all the wire I might get a dot on the screen. Well that was not needed – as I went out to the front yard and began my search I almost immediately got a pretty good sound and using my pin-pointer parted the grass and clover revealing lost wedding band.

Barry was excited and also surprised that I found it in the front yard. He was sure if I was going to find his ring that it would be in the back around the coop. Barry took off inside to tell his wife the good news. He soon emerged and we chatted for a while which is one of the most enjoyable parts of a successful search. As always it was a pleasure to meet another kind and generous client and recover his special ring.

Lost White Gold Diamond Engagement Ring- Found in Grove City, PA by Metal Detecting Specialist Brian Carpenter

I received a text from Madeleine that she had lost her ring is a pasture while building fence. I asked her to give me a call and she provided me with some more information and as luck would have it I was able to head out right away. During our initial conversation she asked me if I ate meat and told me her family had a cattle farm and she would bring me some steaks. So when I was packing up my gear I threw a small cooler in the back, more about that in a bit… About an hour and a half later I met her at the farm where she lost the ring. I looked at the sprawling pastures where she said they had put in about 60 acres or so of fencing. At that point I thought to myself, I am going to be here a while…lol! We talked a bit and I got a few additional bits of information. She had put her ring in her vest pocket with the control for her dog and only removed it from her pocket in two spots and we both thought that logically those could be the places where the ring dropped out. She has also bought a metal detector and walked the fence line but did not check the area where they were working initially. So Madeleine handed me my call out fee and two awesome looking steaks that I deposited in the cooler. She headed out and I started to work.

I started griding the area where they were working with the skid loader.  Back and forth I found a few nails, shell casings and smal random pieces of metal. I had gotten a few good sounds but no ring. Then I got another hit and checked again with my pinpointer…nice steady tone on the top. I parted the grass and there was the ring. It had been about 20 minutes to a half hour. I sent Madeleine a text…hope that you haven’t made it too far, with a picture of the ring and jokingly asking if this was hers. However the cell service was terrible and only the first text made it through before my phone rang. She asked what as up and I said oh you only got my first text and then the others came through with the picture and her response – Yes that’s it! We talked for a few minutes about arrangements for her to get the ring and now that the hard work was done I asked her about the old farm house down the road. As anyone who metal detects knows old farm houses are pretty high on the bucket list as permissions and they can be hard to get. So I inquired if I could look around for a bit before heading back down Interstate 79 and I would drop her ring off. She gave me permission but wanted to come up and get the ring as soon as she could. I met her at the old farm house and as you can see from the picture she was smiling as soon as she pulled in. I was happy to have found her ring, especially as quickly as I did and return it. It was a pleasure to meet and help another kind and extremely generous client!

In case you were wondering, I did not find anything other than a few clad coins at the old farm house but the opportunity was awesome. And after doing some research I found out the signifcance of the « steaks ». Madeleine’s family has a wagyu beef farm. To me at the time it did not mean much – the steaks looked great…however after checking things out I now know the significance of wagyu beef (if you don’t know what it is…look it up) and WOW! So while it has been a really busy weekend and I have not had the opportunity to grill up those steak I am really looking forward to doing so and VERY MUCH appreciate the added bonus and generosity!

Wedding Band Lost While Sledding – Found! by metal detector specialist Brian Carpenter in Irwin, PA

I got a call from Don on my way home from Digstock in NC. He lost his wedding ring in his backyard a few months ago and wanted to see if I could come out and look for it. He had looked, even with a metal detector, and did not have any luck. After getting home and checking my schedule I went out the next day.

When I arrived I met Don’s wife and she showed me where to look. Pretty standard, big hill for sledding with a few small trees and a little area of brush. I started to look and before too long Don came back from work. After about a half hour I found his ring in a mossy area a short distance from where he thought he might have lost it. I gave it to his wife to give to him when he came out of the house. He was happy it was found and I took him to the back to show him where. There had been some pretty good sounds in the backyard and Don told me it was an old golf course. He gave me permission to look around which I was very appreciative. On top of finding his ring I added a bit more clad to the collection, nothing good but it was a beautiful day and a new place to look. As always it was nice to meet another kind and generous client and be able to return their ring to them.
