Lost Platinum Ring in Snow at Big Bear, CA. .. Found and Returned

William and his friends spent the day in the snow near Big Bear, CA. at a roadside recreation area they stopped to play on the hillside snow. William realized his platinum ring missing before they left the area.

The loss happened on Saturday and he called me asking for help the next day. After discussing the circumstances of the loss and exchanging a few photos with a dropped pin where it happen, I agreed to drive the 85 miles to do a search. I didn’t feel it was necessary for William to take the day off of work to meet me at the location.

Monday was the better day to make the drive and there would be less people at the site. The weather was perfect with 8”to 10” of snow still on the ground. The first few minutes of the search revealed that there was a lot of metal trash. ( bottle caps and pull tabs).

The last snow search I did was difficult to check metal signals because the snow had frozen. These conditions were better which gave me an opportunity to use my beach scoop to check targets. There were families playing in the snow with sleds, inter tubing, etc. that I had to work around.

The ring was found after almost two hours of grid searching with my metal detector. I was also able to remove more that 40 metal bottles caps and pull tabs. My search was much easier using the long handle beach scoop.  I didn’t have to bend down to check all the trash signals.

William was able to meet me after work later that evening in Newport Beach to pick up his

*** Chris called me asking for help finding a very special ring that his friend Chris had lost somewhere at Will Rodgers State Beach located in the city of Pacific Palisades, CA. He was calling for his friend, Chris who was very upset about losing this ring.

Chris had the Ring on when he arrived at the beach then noticed it missing after two hours . He had been all over the beach playing football and racing through the surf at low tide. When I arrived the tide was rising. I grid searched the incoming tide as well as the waves would let me. After clearing the wet sand it took me another two hours to eliminate the dry sand, no ring to be found..

It had to be further out in the surf which was now too deep to detect. I returned the next day to thoroughly search the wet low tide area. Boom!! Michael’s ring was there in my scoop. This search could have been a one trip search if Michael felt the ring come off his finger while he was in the water. That’s not always the case, so we have to eliminate each area separately. With the timing controlled by mother nature ( considering the tides )

The important thing is Michael was able to pick up his ring and it was nice to see how happy he was to have it back after feeling so bad about losing it.

*** Vanessa and her family were in Huntington Beach, CA. visiting relatives. While playing in the ocean withe her kids, her white gold diamond engagement ring  was lost in the surf. She and her husband had been together for 20 years and the had just given her the ring a couple weeks before.

Venessa’s cousin, Chantel found my phone number while searching the internet. Chantel gave me detatailed information on the time of day the ring was lost. It was 20 ft. north of lifeguard tower 17. Because it was lost at high tide, I felt we had a chance to find ring at a 2am low tide.

Arriving  at Huntington Beach a half hour before low tide and after about an hour of grid searching, my detector gave me the great signal that turned out to be Venessa ’s ring. I waited till 8am to call them with the good news followed by a photo of the ring.

Venessa and her husband were returning their home in Arizona today, so they were able to stop by to pick up the ring. A very happy couple and it was my pleasure to be available to help them.

*** Ronald lost his IPhone in the sand at Victoria Beach one of the small coves that is in the city of Laguna Beach, CA. He wasn’t sure where the phone was lost until he got home where he could set up his find my phone app on his computer.

He found my contact information on a google search for a metal detector. When Ronald talked to me he said the app was showing the phone at Victoria Beach near the volleyball courts. It still had 5% battery left so it had not been picked up.

The call came to me about 10:30am that morning. I left immediately and was at the location 10 miles away shortly after the call. The grid search area was fairly clear as not too many beach goers on the sand. In less than a half hour I was able to locate Ronald’s iPhone.

He picked it up later that afternoon and was totally elated, thanking me several times. He was also  happy that we were able to set this up without him having to drive to the location. It’s always better to have a person present to help zero in on the location, but in this case he couldn’t be there.

**** Matt called me from San Clemente State Beach. His wife Sasha had been holding his platinum wedding ring while he went swimming in the ocean. She was sitting on their beach blanket so she believed the ring was safe so she just slipped on one of her fingers.

Sometime later Sasha just made a quick gesture with her hand and the ring flew into the dry sand. She panicked a began to search the sand. Then Matt joined in on the search when he returned from his swim. A couple other people on the beach offered to help but the ring could not be found.

One of the beach maintenance personnel brought them a rake to use for the search. He also suggested that Matt try google searching TheRingFinders. Matt was able to get my contact information and called right away. We arranged for me to meet him on the beach an hour later.

I actually was there 15 minutes earlier. I know the beach well which made it easy to find where they were located. Matt told me how the ring was lost, pointing to a 20 square foot area where the ring should be. It was such a small spot and the sand was raked flat. It only took a few minutes to find his wedding ring. We like the easy finds ! They are easy because I can get to the location promptly. So many time people can’t find my service till they leave the area of the loss.

Sasha was totally relieved of her guilt for feeling responsible for losing the ring. Matt was proud that he took the suggestion to call a member of TheRingFinders. A very happy couple could return to their hotel this night for a peaceful sleep. The next morning they were flying home to Texas.

*** Grae was teaching his son to boggie board in the surf at a SoCal Beach. After walking out of the surf he noticed his palladium wedding ring was no longer on his finger. He was sure it was on his finger before entering the ocean.

He texted me four days after the loss because he had not known this service existed. We were later able to discuss some of the details of his loss on a phone call. His first question was how does this work? This is the most common question.

I explained that, if the ring was lost at a higher tide, we have a chance to recover the ring at the lower tides. All dependent on how much sand movement occurs over the next few days. I do need a general idea of where on the beach he was located.

Grae gave me landmarks approximately 100 yards apart. The next morning I was able to get to the beach at a 4am low tide. Two hours of searching were not successful as the surf was difficult to keep a straight grid line. The next morning in the darkness it was a much calmer surf. I got a good signal that turned out to be a palladium wedding band. This had to be the one I was looking for. Palladium rings are not commonly found on the beach.

I know that people stress about the loss of sentimental keepsakes, so I try to keep them updated on the search and recovery as soon as possible. I don’t like to text the good news of a recovery. It’s much more rewarding to hear the voice on the other end of the phone. Good memories that I wish I could share with others.

He was able to get my help using the internet, texts and a short phone call. We met later that afternoon to return his ring that had been in the ocean for more than five days.

*** Christie lost her white gold diamond engagement ring in the surf at a Orange County, CA. beach. She was home 50 miles inland when she contacted me. We talked about the time of day the loss occurred and she gave me verbal directions as to a good landmark on the beach. Neither she or her husband could meet me at the location.

I was able to get to beach at a 4am minus low tide the next day. After more than two hours I got a good signal in knee deep waves that turned out to be Christie’s awesome ring. Even though I cross gridded for another hour the wedding ring did not show. Normally both rings are very close together the first couple days of the loss.

Christie told me in the begging that she was only interested to recover the engagement ring. I did go back a second day for one more try to find the other ring. Crazy surf conditions make for a challenging search. Had to give up on the second ring.

Christie and her husband were able to meet me after they got off work. She was more than happy to have her ring back after believing that it was list forever. We never know if I may find the other ring some day. It’s happened before.

*** After doing a ring recovery for Justin at Bolsa Chica State Beach, I took a little time to detect around the Firepits before driving home. After about a half hour,  I found a new Iphone that was in the sand next to a firepit. The battery needed charging.

Returning home I was able to put a quick charge on the phone. It was locked but I did intercept a message. It said, ”This is a lost cellphone please call this phone number XXX-XXX-XXXX”

I guess this is a function of find apple iPhone ” Find My Phone”..  I contacted the owner using my phone to call him. He sent a friend to pick up the phone later that afternoon. I found out the phone had been lost four days at that location on the beach.

Last time I found the owner of a locked Iphone. I was able to get past the locked feature by asking Siri to call mom. The phone called the owners mother.

*** Carol is visiting Laguna Beach, CA. Her daughter and her went to the beach the day before returning to Utah.. She took her white gold diamond engagement ring off while applying sunscreen setting it on her towel. The rest of the story happens every day, she got distracted, forgetting the ring was there. She didn’t realize her ring was missing until she got to her car.

She returned to the location, spending over an hour of frantically searching for the ring. Someone passing by suggested that she search the internet for my contact information. I got the call taking time to ask a few questions and was able to meet her a half hour later. As we walked down a long set of stairs, she told me she knew it was a long shot but she wanted to make sure we at least tried to search for the ring. I told her if she can get me in the general location, we could find the ring.

As soon as I saw how positive she was about returning to same spot where they had been sitting, I knew this was going to be easy. I set up my metal detector and had the small white gold diamond engagement ring in the scoop a few minutes later. Metal detectors are a good tool for finding rings but the successful recovery has to be credited to Carol getting me to the general area.

She was more than grateful because she had already decided it was going to be impossible to find such a small item in the mass of sand on that beach. Another happy day for Carol and myself
