I received a call from a young man who lost a ring at UBC in Vancouver the other day, he told me the story about how a friend threw it out of a 3rd story balcony at 1 am and the rest is history…

You are so right about people renting a metal detector. It would seem easy for them to just go out and find their lost item, but it doesn’t always work out that way. I had a call on 9-5-14 to look for a gold nugget ring at the beach, when I got there the young man had a Garrett Ace 250 that I think he rented. I knew right away he might be able to locate something in the dry sand, but not so in the wet. He also did not know proper procedure for conducting a search, so basically he was all over the place searching for hours without a scoop as well, and very discouraged by the time I got there to help him. I did end up finding the ring at low tide where the water met the sand, something the young man would not have been able to do with the detector he was using.
Great job on the return.
I think most people just don’t know what to do and they rent a detector thinking it will do the job…As we all know we need different detectors for different searches plus our experience helps a lot… My dream is to make TRF a household name so we can help more and more people…
