THE PURSE, THE PANIC, AND THE RING IN THE BROADLEAF GRASS
Some of the best calls I get start the same way: « You’re not going to believe how this happened. »
This one was a backyard BBQ — family, friends, kids running everywhere, the kind of afternoon that’s supposed to end with full stomachs and good memories. And it did, eventually. But not before a few very tense hours.
Somewhere between the burgers and the lawn games, her young son decided his mom’s purse belonged in the mix. To a kid, a purse is just another thing to dig through and toss — right alongside the frisbees and the sidewalk chalk and whatever else was scattered across that yard. So he did what kids do. He emptied it into the grass, piece by piece, without a second thought.
The mom found out and started the recovery mission — wallet, keys, phone, the usual suspects. One by one, she tracked them down in the grass. But when she got to the end of the list, one item was missing: her platinum and diamond engagement ring, tucked in some corner of the purse, now lost somewhere in a yard full of toys, blankets, chairs, and every other distraction a summer BBQ leaves behind.
She searched for hours. On her hands and knees, running her fingers through the grass, hoping to feel that unmistakable shape. Nothing. As the afternoon wore on and the light started to change, she made the call.
I got out there and she walked me through it — where the purse had been, where the boy had been playing, the general path of the chaos. Backyards like this are deceptively tricky. Toys, tent stakes, bottle caps, pull tabs, sprinkler heads — all of it lights up a detector, and all of it has to get checked and ruled out before you can trust what’s underneath.
I started working the area in careful, overlapping passes. Signal after signal, most of them exactly what you’d expect from a yard that had just hosted a full-blown cookout. Then, just a few minutes in, one target stood out — buried under a thick patch of broadleaf grass, low enough to the ground that she’d likely swept right past it a dozen times without ever seeing it.
I parted the grass by hand.
There it was. Platinum band, diamond catching the last of the afternoon light, completely unharmed.
I’ll never get tired of that moment — watching a mom go from exhausted and defeated to covering her mouth in disbelief in about two seconds flat. That’s the whole job, right there.
