Gold Necklace Found on Recreation Field in Vermont

2020 has been an unusual year for searches. The first six months were very quiet, maybe because of the pandemic. But lately I have been super busy, some weeks having three or four different searches. I have helped many people find septic tanks, property markers, even arrows and military dog tags. There were a few heartbreaking unsuccessful searches, but the search tonight helps offset those others. Again I should remind everyone that if you lose Jewelry in a public place, call me immediately!!!

I got a call from a local college student whose beautiful gold cross and chain had been lost on a recreation field. He was desperate to get it back because 16 years ago, when he was 5, his grandfather had given it to him. Before going out on the field he asked his friend to hold onto it so he wouldn’t lose it. His friend, due to an injury, was taking it easy, just walking around the field and occasionally doing some stretches. Somehow the necklace came up missing, but they knew it was somewhere out on the field. They all searched for a long time with no luck.

As soon as I got out of work I hit the road to head on an evening search which I knew could be a long search and late night! Four of them helped me search by using flashlights, but the weeds and grass was long and thick. After a couple hours they all had to leave to go do homework. I told him that I would stay for a couple more hours and then come back the next night and weekend, if necessary. The ground was full of signals, I probably dropped to my knees nearly 200 times investigating signals. Finally, an hour after they left, I got a good signal and found it all balled up and deep in the grass where they never would’ve seen it. What a great night’s ending! I made him and his friend who had lost it very happy and relieved.

Found Man’s Gold Chain near Burlington VT

Got a call from a guy who was looking for his gold chain on a beach near Burlington. He had set it on his towel and it disappeared into the sand. He raked the sand with his fingers and couldn’t find it. Being lost in a public place, I threw my stuff in the car and went straight there.
He showed me the area, I fired up the 24K, tested it on a piece of metal debris and took the first swing. About 2/3rds of the way through the first swing I got a signal. He reached his fingures deep into the sand and pulled out his chain! Less than 5 seconds, a new record!!!

Delicate Gold Necklace found on Lake Champlain beach, Vermont

Got a call this afternoon from a distressed woman on a beach on Lake Champlain. Two days ago she had lost a very special necklace. I told her I would get there just as fast as I could pack up my things.

When I arrived she explained that she was in Vermont on a temporary work assignment and had to leave in a few days. Her boyfriend, who was still in college in Texas, had given it to her and she knew if she left Vermont without it she would be broken hearted about it (I think wedding bells are in the future!).
She had taken the necklace off to go for a swim, and set it on her towel on the sand. When she came back from the swim, the bugs decided to attack her (Vermont bugs are fierce this time of year!!). She jumped up, grabbed her towel and hurried down the beach a little ways to get away from them. In the haste she had forgotten about the necklace. When she realized it was gone she went back and couldn’t find it. After searching for it for a couple days she thought she would buy a metal detector. But then she learned about The Ring Finders and gave me a call. I’m glad she didn’t buy one, because it would’ve cost her $800 or more to get one that would pick up the the signal from such a light chain and tiny diamond pendant.
I got started and dug about 50 tiny pieces of foil and scrap metal. I got a faint signal with crazy numbers and dug it anyway. About 2 or 3 inches down was a beautiful gold chain! What a relief, there it was, and noone had walked off with it! She collapsed to the ground and held it tight. One very happy lady!!

Ring Found in Burlington Vermont: The Ring Finders

I got a call this afternoon from a fellow who was our working in his garden and lost his wedding band. The last thing he had done was lay down a couple layers of newspaper in between all the plants and cover all that with straw. He said this system helps keep the weeds under control. When he was walking back to the house he realized his ring wasn’t on his finger. His heart sank fast. He wasn’t able to find it after checking all gloves, pockets and around the garden. So, he tried Googling where to rent a metal detector and one of my postings came up.

I told him I would be there just as fast as I could pack all my equipment into the car. When I got there he showed me the likeliest area to search. I saw all the metal fencing and wire tomato cages and knew this could be a challenging search. Luckily the search area was pretty small.

I began the search and started getting lots of signals from nails, wire and staples. Every time I got a signal and pulled up scrap metal I could hear him quietly going through the emotional roller coaster. Obviously this ring meant an awful lot to him. After he removed all the tomato cages I started going over the garden again. Soon I got a snapping signal with gold numbers on my display. There it was, hiding in the mulch. I passed it to him and could see a very relieved person! We are practicing social distancing because of Covid 19 being still in the area, so no hug or handshake. None was needed, the airwaves were full of his happiness!!

I love this hobby!

Lost Ring Found in Burlington VT

I got an email yesterday from a woman who lost a ring a week ago. She and her boyfriend looked for it all week with no luck, and were about to go buy a detector to find it. The ring hadn’t come from an expensive jewelry store, but was special to her because her boyfriend had made it for her, and it is a very cool ring!

I went over and she showed me the search area. It included the backyard where they had planted clover over a large area and flower bulbs along a fence. She had also possibly lost it on a 100 yard sidewalk.

I started where the bulbs were, got lots of nail and scrap signals. This property had been lived and worked on for probably the last 200 years! Then we went down the sidewalk with no luck. Lastly, I figured the best thing to do was a grid search of the back lawn where they had just tilled and planted clover. Lots of signals!! On the third pass, I got a signal with numbers all over the scale, but dug it anyway. There it was! I got cheers from her and her boyfriend who were with me and cheers came out if the house windows, too! I didn’t realize there was such a big audience!

Engagement Ring Recovered Near Shelburne Vermont

I received an email from a woman yesterday who had been house sitting for someone about a month ago. She had lost her paladium engagement ring and the matching wedding band. The owners of the home also had a family of goats.

One day after out feeding the goats, she discovered both her rings were missing. She went back out and searched by eye and found the larger wedding band, but not the beautiful little engagement ring. At some point she was able to borrow a metal detector, but had no luck with that.

She found my ad on The Ring Finders website, sent an email and made arrangements with the owner to allow us to go back and search.

We met there at noon today and got started. After a couple deep signals and about 5 minutes, a got a nice crisp tone that registered an 88/89 on my White’s detector. I knew this was it!! About 2-3” down in the bedding was her ring, I pulled it up and it sparkled in the bright sunlight. She got the biggest smile, and both rings were back together!

After a long Winter of searching for keys lost in the snow, it was nice to recover a very sentimental ring again!

Wedding Band Found in the Green Mountains, Vermont

I was contacted earlier in the week by a lady who lost her wedding band. She had been outside her house exercising her dogs, doing laundry, dishes, and getting her 4 kids ready and loading them into the car to take them to Cub Scouts. Earlier that day she had put her rings into a pocket, and this particular pair of pants had extremely shallow pockets. When she was about to leave, she reached into her pocket to put her rings back on, the wedding band was missing.

She wasn’t sure where the ring could’ve fallen out, but she knew it was either in the house or on the lawn. Her children and friends helped search visually with no luck. She borrowed a metal detector from a helpful neighbor, and had no luck with that either. So, she contacted me for help.

We agreed on today for a search, the weather was cool, but dry. I got there early because I thought it could easily be one of those full day or even a multiple day search. She showed me the large back yard and hill, the most likely area it would’ve been lost, and I got started. In a little while her oldest son came out to watch and help search. He showed me the areas that he remembered seeing his mother go. I had brought 4 detectors with me, because I thought her kids would like to run them. After some instructions, he got started with one of them.

He gave me good direction, because shortly after I got a good signal and found her ring deep in the grass! His Mom was very happy!

After that, he and I detected for awhile, hunting for coins, relics or golden treasure. I sure was hoping he would find something, but after all, it is a hobby that requires extreme patience…

Found Glasses In Vermont Woods

I got an email a couple weeks ago from a lady who lost her glasses out in the woods. She really needs these glasses because she got a bad eye injury while in a car accident. She had been to at least 2 eye doctors before they got her into a satisfactory pair of glasses. They were quite expensive, too.

She and a friend are creating trails in a beautiful piece of woods that will soon be in a conservation trust for the public to enjoy forever. She was out walking on the trails, lost track of time, and realized she was late to meet some people that were arriving to see the area. So, she decided to take a shortcut run though the woods, which didn’t go so well. She took quite a tumble and her glasses went flying. Later, she looked several hours and couldn’t find them. The frames were a color which blended too well with the forest floor.

So, last weekend she showed me the area and I spent nearly 3 hours searching, with no luck. I told her that we would eventually find them and not to give up. My wife and I went back this morning, we expanded the search area and in less than 30 minutes I found them. They were hiding in s clump of ferns where we never would’ve found them without a metal detector.

We met her at her house and made her day with the news. We visited for awhile and come to find out, her house was built in the early 1800’s and she also has a super old log cabin on her land. She invited us back in the Spring for what should prove to be an awesome relic hunt. Hopefully her kids will be joining us, they will be amazed at what has been hiding under the soil. I can’t wait!!!

Post Earring Found in Burlington Vermont

Got a call from a lady yesterday who had lost her post earring on her property a couple weeks ago. She was doing some gardening when a bee had attacked her and chased her around her back yard and into the house. She discovered later, while looking in a mirror, that her earring was missing. She figured she had knocked it out while trying to brush the bee off her ear.

This earring was special to her because several years ago she had drawn up a design and had a custom jeweler make them for her. She did a lot of searching with no luck. She figured that a metal detector or a detectorist was needed and found my name online.

Yesterday I was out of state with my wife so I couldn’t do a search until today. She walked me around the “chase” area and then I started to ready my equipment. As I was changing the detector’s coil I looked down and to my astonishment I saw her earring laying there in the gravel. Miracles happen sometimes! Actually, as soon as I arrive at search locations, my eyes immediately go into search mode. Its just instinct I guess. Some searches take me 15 hours and other ones take only a few minutes, you just never know.

She was a very happy lady and I was glad to find it for her. Afterwards, we visited for awhile and shared stories about our years taking care of our aging parents.

Ring Found in Vermont Lake

Got a call last weekend from a guy who lost his wedding band while vacationing and swimming in Lake Eden. It was a custom made ring, inscribed with “Best Friends” and the date of their wedding 25 years ago. He was feeling sick about losing it, and frustrated that he had it resized larger not long ago. He lost it about 75’ off shore and about 12 feet down to the silty bottom. He tried unsuccessfully to find it swimming down with a mask.

Luckily for him, I had recently made the acquaintance of a scuba diver, Chris Farr, who is very enthusiastic about doing recoveries of all types. He has many thousands of dollars and hundreds of training hours invested. You may recognize him from being in the news recently doing searches for the Vermont State Police, other agencies and private people. He said he is glad to help in water searches that are too deep for me. He’s comfortable doing solo searches down to 20 feet as long as he has someone there for surface support. (He also dives well below 100 feet deep, but only when partnered with a competent, certified diver)

We all met today at the camp and discussed the search strategy. The family had done a good job memorizing the area where the ring had been lost. I was to be the support crew, sitting on a paddle board just above Chris, while he carefully scoured the bottom with my metal detecting equipment. At first we got a little discouraged when we discovered how thick the layer of soft silt was, afraid that the ring may have already sunk deep into it.

It was fun to watch Chris search, he has some very impressive searching techniques for sure. After finding an old soda can and a fishing weight, a little over an hour into the search, he got a good signal and carefully extracted the beautiful ring out of the silt. It had already settled about 2-3 inches in. We all celebrated!!!
