When I saw « Heirloom Gold Bracelet » pop up on my phone, I knew there was no time to waste. Little did I know, this search would take me to a beach that had just made headlines for a wild Great White Shark encounter exactly three weeks prior!

I immediately called Jesse to skip the back-and-forth texting. That’s when I learned this was a 5-day-old cold case. His wife, Waterfall, had been boogie boarding around high tide while on vacation from the Berkshires, Massachusetts. They had searched the sand empty-handed multiple times before heading back home, heartbroken. High tide surf is the perfect recipe for losing jewelry, and after five days of shifting Atlantic tides, the odds were heavily stacked against us.

🦈 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝

The next morning, I headed out and checked in with Greg Wilfert, the longtime Park Manager and Director at Scarborough Beach State Park, a truly beautiful beach in the Town of Scarborough, Maine. Greg and his team are fantastic about referring beachgoers to me whenever a sentimental item is lost.

Greg is a true legend, wrapping up 55 consecutive years of lifeguard service. But just three weeks to the day before I arrived, he was dragged 5 to 6 feet underwater when a great white shark 🦈 clamped onto his rescue torpedo buoy! Seeing him safe and sound was the perfect inspiration to kick off a tough hunt. I shot a quick beach layout video for Jesse to confirm the area, fired up my detector, and started swinging.

⚡ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲

With the tide actively pushing back in, my search window was incredibly tight. I grid-searched from the low tide line horizontally toward the shore. For nearly an hour, nothing. Then, my Minelab Manticore gave a low, scratchy tone—registering a Target ID (TID) of just 07. Right next to it, another low tone erupted.

Usually, a 07 TID is just shredded aluminum foil, but ultra-fine gold chains fall into this exact range. I took a scoop from the first hole and uncovered a very delicate gold chain—honestly too small to be a bracelet. I swung over the second hole right next to it, took another scoop, and pulled out a second gold chain.

When I laid them out, the mystery solved itself. The powerful Scarborough surf hadn’t just pulled the heirloom off Waterfall’s wrist—it had torn it completely into two separate pieces!

To surprise Jesse, I recorded a live video (the one I released last night on this page). I filmed the grid lines, kept the lens off myself, and said into the mic: « I will be leaving now because I just found it. » At that exact second, I panned the camera straight to the holes, showing the two pieces of gleaming gold still resting in the sand.

About three hours later, Jesse called back after seeing the clip at work. He was completely stunned, thrilled, and couldn’t wait to tell Waterfall!

Because they live four hours away and work busy schedules, I offered to ship it, but they insisted on retrieving it in person. Three weeks later, they made the drive back to Maine and met Cheryl and me at our Saco home.

Waterfall and Jesse were absolutely beaming to have her mother’s bracelet back where it belongs. Hugs, handshakes, and smiles were the order of the day! Waterfall told me her mother had the custom bracelet made and passed it down to her because she knew how much she loved it. Waterfall hadn’t taken it off once until the surf claimed it a month earlier. She plans to have the original designer repair it when she can visit her hometown area again.

Then, they completely caught Cheryl and me off guard. Waterfall surprised us with a DELICIOUS BLUEBERRY PIE. YUMMY!!! 🥧 It was such a genuine gesture. I told them it wasn’t necessary, but they insisted, and my stomach won out as I accepted their beautiful gift!

Imagine receiving the perfect Mother’s Day ring, only to watch it vanish into a massive lake just six weeks later. That is exactly the nightmare Michelle faced, and it all started during a beautiful, normal day at the beach with her family.

🌊 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝

On July 3rd, I received a message from Michelle. She was in urgent need of a water recovery over at Sebago Lake Maine in the Town of Windham, Maine.

Michelle sent over the details of what had happened, and it’s a situation many of us can relate to. She had taken all of her rings off to apply sun lotion to her children and then to herself.

To keep them safe, she placed them all into a pocket on her bathing suit. With the family protected from the sun, Michelle grabbed a float and went into the water to enjoy the beautiful July 4th holiday weekend, soaking up the rays while floating around the private lakeside community beach.

The shock came once Michelle exited Sebago Lake Maine .

She reached into her bathing suit pocket to retrieve her rings, only to find to her utter horror that two of her rings were missing. Cruelly, one of the missing pieces was a deeply sentimental 𝑴𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓’𝒔 𝑫𝒂𝒚 𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 representing her three children’s birth months.

The beautiful white gold ring featured three stones—two sparkling diamonds flanking a vibrant, eye-catching red center stone.

To make matters worse, Michelle had just received this precious ring six weeks earlier, and now it had slipped out of her pocket and fallen somewhere onto the bottom of Sebago Lake.

🏊‍♂️ 𝐀 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲

Disbelief quickly turned to action. Michelle, her children, family members, and other supportive community members immediately rallied together and started searching the crystal clear waters.

Some scanned from above on floats while others waded through the water on foot, desperately looking for a glimmer of white gold on the lake floor…

As the family and neighbors searched, a shout went up from the water—Michelle’s son had spotted one of the missing rings!

Floating along the surface, he was peering down through the crystal clear water when a flash of metal caught his eye on the lake floor, about 4 to 5 feet deep.

Without wasting a second, he dove straight down, reached past the rocks, and gripped the ring. He broke the surface triumphantly, holding the ring high in the air to show his mother.

The excitement was electric, but there was absolutely no time to waste. One ring was safely back, but the most sentimental piece—the beautiful white gold Mother’s Day ring—was still lost somewhere beneath the waves.

With new hope fueling the team, the search ensued for the final ring… Unfortunately, despite everyone’s best efforts, the day ended without finding the second ring.

📅 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟔𝐭𝐡: 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭

That is when Michelle reached out to me. Because the beach belongs to a private, gated community, it wasn’t a spot where I could just waltz right in and start searching on my own. To get access to the area, I needed to be accompanied by a community member. We looked at the schedule, and the next time Michelle would be available to meet me at the gate was three days later, on July 6th.

Perfect! The date and time were set, and a plan was officially in motion.

When the day arrived, Gary and I pulled up to the gate and were warmly greeted by Michelle and her children.
We made our way down to the waterfront, where Michelle pointed out the fairly large area she had floated around during the holiday weekend. The search zone included clusters of rocks and massive underwater boulders—some sitting just inches below the surface, and a few others just barely breaking through the water. She also pointed out the exact spot just past one of those large boulders where her son had successfully recovered the first ring.
Our grid search plan was to concentrate our efforts heavily around these rock formations.
My biggest concern going into this was that the missing ring might have drifted a little too far out, into water that was completely over my head. To tackle the zone efficiently, Gary and I divided and conquered. I waded right out to the deep water where the first ring had been found and began a tight grid search, moving back and forth parallel to the shoreline. With each complete pass, I pushed myself a little deeper out into the lake, continuing until it was no longer safe to go any further.
Meanwhile, Gary started right at the shoreline. His mission was to work his way from the shallow water outward until he reached the deep boulder where I had initially started. By combining these two approaches, we were able to systematically cover a very large, thorough footprint in the exact zone Michelle believed the ring was most likely resting.

🚗 𝐓𝐡𝐞 « 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐞 »

After three grueling hours of intensive searching, digging up many coins and pieces of beach trash later, we unfortunately had to call the search without finding the ring.

The water depth simply got to a point where I could not go out any further safely. Gary and I don’t like it one bit when we don’t succeed. We take every single recovery personally, but sometimes in this line of work, we have to accept a temporary defeat.

Before packing up, we sat down and talked out the strategy with Michelle. We discussed the deeper water and assured her that we would certainly come back to search again later in the summer. In August and September, the lake levels usually drop a few feet, which would completely open up the deep areas I just couldn’t reach today. Michelle agreed to keep a close eye on the waterline and promised to contact us the moment it dropped.
Defeated for now, Gary and I loaded up our gear and made the long drive of shame home…

📉 𝐀 𝐋𝐨𝐰 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞 & 𝐀 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲

Fast forward to late August. Gary and I were driving home from a successful recovery on « The Sandbar » at 𝐒𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐠𝐨 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞. As we passed the gated community where there was still a missing 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, I mentioned that I should contact the owner, Michelle, knowing just how low the lake level had become.

Just 10 days later, Michelle beat me to it! She reached out on September 2nd to tell me the water level was down significantly—by two feet or more. Since she was about to go on vacation, she could get us back past the gates and into the water. Awesome.

🔍 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐝 (𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧!)

Two days later, Gary and I resumed the search. We expanded our grid out deeper and into other areas we hadn’t covered the first time around. We even were out past the roped off buoys, that Michelle had not gone past. But after another three hours of grinding it out, we still had no ring.

I was convinced the ring had to be out deeper than we could search during our first attempt, way further out than Michelle had ever been on her float. I continued working my way back through the water toward the shore, preparing myself to break the bad news to Michelle.

🔔 𝐓𝐡𝐞 « 𝐅𝐨𝐢𝐥 » 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐥

As I was finishing up the grid near the shoreline, standing in just ankle-deep water a few feet out, my detector suddenly went off with a loud, low tone. The Target Identification (TID) read 07-08.
It was definitely in the gold range, but given how close we were to the shore and the picnic tables, my first thought was foil. It had to be foil, right? I dug the target anyway, and BAM!!!

💎 💎 𝐔𝐧𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲!
A white gold ring with two diamonds and a brilliant red center stone appeared in my scoop. I couldn’t believe my eyes! After six total hours of searching deep water, the ring was sitting just a few feet from the shoreline, only about 60 to 75 feet from where the first ring had been found. We were so certain it was out deep, but the shallows held the treasure. Lesson learned.

😭 💎 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐥

At this time, Michelle had no idea I had it. I called her over and casually told her we were just about done. I asked her a few quick questions to distract her, then I held the ring up right in front of me and asked, « 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐭? »

Michelle’s hands went straight up to her face in total shock. Happy tears immediately started flowing, and I couldn’t have been happier for her.

It was truly wonderful for Gary and I to witness such an emotional reaction. After having the ring for just six weeks and now just over two months lost in 𝐒𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐠𝐨 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞, Michelle is once again wearing her beloved children’s birthstones on her finger. With the happy tears flowing, the hugs and thank yous over, Gary and I drove home not on the « 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐞 » but on a « 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐞! » 🏆🚗💨

One second you’re grabbing the sunscreen to lather up the kids, and the next, you watch a priceless multi-generational gold band shoot off your finger like a rocket. Total panic. That was the nightmare Tyler faced just minutes after stepping onto 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 in Kennebunkport Maine for what was supposed to be a relaxing morning.

Before they could even unpack a single beach chair, disaster struck. ☀️🏖️

As the family unpacked, Tyler did what any good dad does—he grabbed the sun protection to start lathering up himself and the kids. Knowing that sunscreen and jewelry don’t mix, he went to slide his gold wedding ring off his finger for safekeeping.

In a split second, the unthinkable happened.

The ring caught the air, slipped, and shot right off his finger, flying through the air and completely disappearing into the endless abyss of the soft beach sand. 💨💍

A frantic family search immediately ensued. Everyone was down on their hands and knees, sifting through the grains, desperately hoping for a glint of gold. But as we all know, once a ring plunges into the dry beach sand, it vanishes completely from sight. Realizing they might just be burying it deeper or shifting it further away, they wisely stopped.

That’s when Tyler reached out to me. 📞🚨

When we spoke, Tyler was incredibly helpful. He kept his wits about him and knew exactly where he had been standing, plus the general trajectory of where the ring had gone airborne. But then, he shared a detail that gave me actual goosebumps.

Losing a wedding ring is stressful enough, but losing a multi-generational family heirloom carries a completely different kind of weight. The stakes were officially raised, and there was no way I was going to let this piece of history stay buried in the sand.

Cheryl and I loaded up the gear, pointed the Ring Finder Mobile toward Kennebunkport Maine , and stepped on the gas…

When we arrived, the beach was actually beautifully quiet and peaceful. Being mid-morning on August 30th, the height of the summer rush had cleared out, giving us plenty of room to operate without a crowd.

We were met by Tyler, who led us down to the sand and straight to the exact location where the ring was lost. He took a deep breath and reenacted the entire scene for us, pointing out his exact footing and tracing the arc of the flying ring with his hand. Having that visual reference is everything.

Once the trajectory was locked in, there was no more talking left to do. It was time to get to work.

The area itself was very small, but we had a bit of a hurdle to clear first. There were several beach accessories scattered right over the drop zone that were made with metal parts. It’s ironic, but the absolute worst enemy of a metal detector is other metal! The machine will pick up all of those surrounding metal objects, which can easily mask a gold ring and hide it from the coil.

The best thing to do in that situation is simple: get all the outside metal completely out of the area.

Once we cleared the clutter and moved everything aside, the search resumed. I fired up the Minelab Manticore, dialed in the settings for the dry sand, and swung the coil to the ground. The hunt was officially on.

Within just one minute, the Manticore sang out. I received the exact tone and Target Identification (TID) number I had been hoping for—a very nice, solid low tone with a TID of 28. That number is definitely in the gold range! 🚨✨

By this time, Tyler’s kids were watching closely and getting all excited. I looked at them and asked if they wanted to help me find the ring by digging in the sand right where my detector was pointing.

They were more than happy to do that! Talk about a real-life beach treasure hunt for actual gold—a young boy’s absolute dream. The two brothers went for it without needing to be asked twice, their hands flying through the sand.

All of a sudden, Teddy, the younger boy, feels something, pulls a shiny gold ring straight out of the sand, and yells, « 𝐇𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐲! » right as his older brother yells at the top of his lungs, « 𝐖𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐈𝐓. 𝐖𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆! » 🥳🙌👦👦

At around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, I received a text from Julia of Saco, Maine.

She had just discovered that her ŌURA Ring was missing! She believed it had fallen out of her beach chair while she was leaving the beach at Tunis Avenue in Ocean Park, Maine around 1 p.m.

Julia had received the ring as a birthday present just a few weeks earlier, making it far more than just a small smart ring—it was a meaningful gift from someone she loved.

She wrote:

💡 For those unfamiliar with an Oura Ring, it’s a small smart ring that tracks wellness information such as sleep, activity, heart rate, and body temperature trends.

Julia was hoping I could search for it Sunday morning.

Fortunately, I already had a 5:00 a.m. appointment at Gooch’s Beach, near Kennebunkport Maine to search for another Oura Ring that had been lost while surfing three weeks earlier!

Unfortunately, we couldn’t find that ring. Gary Hill and I then headed to Ocean Park to meet Julia.

🏖️ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛 𝗕𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗦!

Julia was already there, visually searching the sand once again.

After a quick meet-and-greet, she showed us the search area near the top of the slope, in the area commonly known as the “Towel Line.”

On a hot summer day, this is one of the most sought-after spots on the beach!

The search area was only about 65–75 feet long, from the beach access path to the Towel Line.

Gary and I split up.

Gary started at the spot where Julia had placed her beach chair, working toward the access path. I started at the path and worked toward Gary.

We figured the search would take 10–15 minutes.

We had no idea how quickly this search would end!

😲 “𝙅𝙐𝙇𝙄𝘼, 𝘾𝙊𝙈𝙀 𝙃𝙀𝙍𝙀!”

We had barely started swinging our detectors when Gary suddenly yelled over to us:

“𝙅𝙐𝙇𝙄𝘼, 𝘾𝙊𝙈𝙀 𝙃𝙀𝙍𝙀!”

There was a little excitement in his voice.

My first thought?

𝗡𝗢 𝗪𝗔𝗬!!!

We hadn’t been searching for more than 90 SECONDS!

Julia and I hurried over to Gary.

There he stood, wearing that familiar sly smile! 😏

He pointed down at the sand, and there it was!

About one-quarter of Julia’s little Oura Ring was sticking out of the sand, right where she had been sitting along the Towel Line!

Gary told us he’d heard a very good, low-tone signal on his Minelab Manticore, with a Target Identification (TID) reading of 02.

Neither of us had ever recovered an Oura Ring before, so we had no idea what its TID would be.

That’s why we always check 𝑬𝑽𝑬𝑹𝒀 𝑵𝑶𝑵-𝑭𝑬𝑹𝑹𝑶𝑼𝑺 𝑻𝑰𝑫!

You never know what that next signal might turn out to be. Ignore those low numbers, and you could miss something important!

Behind every short message like this is a heart-stopping moment. I dialed the number back immediately, and a man named 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐤 answered the phone. You could hear the mixture of stress and hope in his voice as he filled me in on exactly what happened.

Nick, his family, and friends had been out enjoying a classic late-summer beach day. The sun was warm, but the Atlantic Ocean was already showing its brisk, colder autumn teeth. Nick was right in the thick of the fun—tossing a football around, swimming, and body surfing in the waves.

It wasn’t until he finally stepped out of the chilly water that he looked down at his hand. His heart dropped. 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐓𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐞. 🌀💔

The cold water had likely shrunk his fingers just enough for the heavy band to slip off. To make matters worse, it happened at 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐞. The powerful waves had completely swallowed the area. Nick and his crew didn’t give up; they waited patiently for the tide to start receding. Using their beach setup—their umbrella and chairs—as a visual landmark, they launched a massive visual search party down by the water.

Nick knew the search zone wasn’t very large, but as any detectorist knows, a heavy Tungsten ring sinks incredibly fast into shifting wet sand, and finding it with the naked eye is impossible.
I asked Nick the big question: Which beach are you at?
« 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤, » he replied.

I asked if the tide had receded enough for me to come down and start a proper search. Nick gave me the words every detectorist loves to hear: « 𝐘𝐞𝐬. »

But then, I had to ask—how did he find me? How did a guy from New Hampshire know to call The Ring Finders of Maine in his moment of panic?

Nick told me that while his group was out on the wet sand, walking around with their heads down and eyes peeled, a woman walking along the beach noticed their intense search. She stopped and asked what they were looking for. The second Nick told her he had lost his wedding ring, her face lit up.

Talk about small-world magic and incredible karma. Of all the miles of the coastline, and of all the thousands of people on the beach that day, the exact right person walked past Nick in his hour of need.

Before hanging up, I put our strategy into motion. I asked Nick to walk back out and stand exactly in the area where he thought the ring had slipped off, snap a photo, and text it to me. Not only would this give me a clear visual landmark up on the shore, but more importantly, I could pull the GPS location data right from that digital photo to pinpoint our starting grid.

Technology is a beautiful thing—in fact, I had just returned home an hour or two earlier from a completely successful GPS-guided search for a lost phone down in Ogunquit! 📱📍

With a proven game plan locked in, 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 loaded up the heavy-duty gear, packed it all into « 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞, » and hit the road, tearing toward Ocean Park, Maine . The pressure was on, the tide was right, and the hunt was officially ON! 🚗⚡

🌅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐄 𝐀𝐓 𝐎𝐂𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐊

By the time we pulled up and arrived at the beach, it was late afternoon. The peak summer crowds had thinned out, and the shoreline was wide, quiet, and peaceful.
Looking out over the expanse of the receding tide, we saw a single figure walking slowly across the wet sand, head down, eyes intensely glued to the ground, searching for any glint of metal.
The amateur sleuth in me quickly deduced that this had to be Nick. With our detectors ready and confidence high, Cheryl and I grabbed our gear and headed right down the beach straight toward him. It was time to put the metal detectors to work! 🧭🌾

📍 𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒

Nick greeted us warmly, a look of pure relief washing over his face as we arrived with the equipment. He pointed out the general perimeter where he thought the ring had taken its plunge—estimating it to be roughly a 75′ X 75′ area of wet sand.
Instead of swinging blindly, I asked for the 𝐆𝐏𝐒 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 from the photo he had taken. I plugged those exact numbers into my device, walked right to the designated spot on the beach, and looked around.
With a definitive starting point locked into the digital map, I visualized the terrain, calculated the tide’s movement, and came up with my 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧. It was time to clear the zone, strip by strip. 🗺️🔍

🎧 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐔𝐍𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐁𝐄𝐋 𝐒𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐌

My plan was precise: start slightly to the north of the GPS pin, head south, turn around to return north, and continue this tight, parallel pattern until the wedding ring was found.
I fired up the detector and made my first grid pass. Silence. Nothing but the low hum of the saltwater background.
I turned around and headed back north on the second pass. Again, nothing. Shifting wet sand is notorious for hiding deep targets, but you have to trust the grid.
Turning around, I started heading south once again on my third pass. I was nearing the very end of the line when my headphones exploded. 𝐀 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝, 𝐮𝐧𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐝-𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨.
I glanced down at the screen. 𝐀 𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐤-𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝 𝟒𝟕 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐓𝐈𝐃) stared back at me. In the world of metal detecting, a TID of 47 is an absolute, textbook classic Tungsten signal.
My heart did a little jump. I looked up and called Nick over to the spot. « I can’t give you a 100% guarantee, » I told him, trying to keep expectations managed, « but I am incredibly confident that this is your Tungsten wedding ring. »
With the tension at an all-time high, Cheryl quickly stepped into position and hit record on her phone to capture the moment. With Nick looking on, holding his breath, I raised my heavy-duty sand scoop and plunged it deep into the heavy, shifting wet sand… 🏖️🎥👀

💍 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐄

With one swift motion, I brought up the heavy scoop and threw the pile of wet sand right up onto the beach. I quickly waved my metal detector over the hole—silence. Then, I swung the coil over the fresh pile of sand on the surface. 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐏! 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐏! 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐏! The target was out.
I ran my fingers directly through the wet clump of sand. My fingers brushed against something solid, smooth, and heavy.
I pulled it free, held it up into the late afternoon sunlight, and showed it to Nick.
« 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬. 𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞? »
Nick’s face lit up with absolute awe. The stress of the last few hours completely vanished in a second.
« 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞. 𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫! » he cried out.
Nick then reached out, gave me a very firm handshake, and thanked me sincerely. With the heavy cloud of worry completely lifted, he turned back toward his group of family and friends waiting up on the beach. 💥🙌

🎉 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐔𝐌𝐏𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍!

Nick raised his arm, locking his hand around the recovered wedding ring, and lifted it high above his head in pure triumph! 🏆🙌

The response was instantaneous. A loud burst of applause and cheers echoed all the way down from the dry sand where his inner circle had been watching anxiously. As we all started walking off the beach together, you could see the crushing stress completely vanish from Nick. He was smiling—and smiling big—as he made his way back up to his celebrating family and friends. Their late August beach day instantly turned back into a party, and the celebration was officially back on! 🥂🏖️✨

The thick, heavy fog was rolling in across 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐎𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡, swallowing the coastline in a damp, gray mist. Gary Hill had just successfully recovered Sean’s lost wedding ring—another emotional reunion in the books for TRFOM.

🔍 𝐀 𝐅𝐔𝐍 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐒 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐀 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐔𝐄 𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 🔍

Instead of packing up right away, we decided to stay on the beach. We were waiting for Sean to call us back, passing the time by enjoying a little recreational metal detecting for a change—just swinging the detectors for fun without the pressure of a targeted search.

That’s when the quiet was broken. My phone went off with a sharp chime. Pulling it out, I looked down at a text message that immediately shifted our gears. This is what it said:

💬 « 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫? 𝐈𝐦 𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐚 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫 𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐬. 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩! 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐛𝐥𝐞? »

Without wasting a second, I replied: « 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦? 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞? »

📱 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐔𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐇 📱

A few minutes later, my phone rang. On the other end was a loyal follower of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞 who happened to be at a Yoga on the Beach session down at Pine Point Beach in the Town of Scarborough, Maine . She had been texting me, but realized it would be much faster if I just talked to the young man directly so he could answer my questions.

She handed the phone over, and a polite but clearly stressed voice came on the line.

« 𝐇𝐢, 𝐈’𝐦 𝐉𝐚𝐤𝐞, » he introduced himself.

Jake quickly filled in the blanks of what had happened. The previous evening, he had been out on a date, and the two of them ended up stargazing on the beach at Pine Point. They had been sitting up near the dunes, enjoying the perfect night—right up until the moment they decided to leave.

💔 𝐒𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐃 💔

When Jake and his date finally walked back to the parking lot and he reached into his pocket for his key fob, his heart dropped. It was gone.

Jake and his date immediately turned back around, frantically retracing their steps back to the spot where they had been sitting. But in the pitch black, the key fob was nowhere to be found.

They spent hours running their fingers through the cold sand, using only the dim flashlights on their smartphones to guide them. Despite their exhaustive efforts, the beach refused to give it up. It was as if the shifting sand had completely swallowed the fob whole.

🚗 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐃 𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐄 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒 🚗

I listened to his story and smiled. I told Jake he was in serious luck—Gary and I were only 2 to 3 miles down the road in OOB and would be there momentarily. Hanging up the phone, Gary and I immediately walked off the beach through the thick fog, loaded up, and headed straight to Pine Point.

Once we arrived, we walked out into the misty fog onto the beach. Near a group of people quietly participating in a yoga session, we spotted a young man holding a metal detector. I walked over to him and asked if he was Jake, the one looking for a key fob.

Sure enough, it was Jake. Meeting us in person, he elaborated on the rest of his exhausting night. After desperately searching the beach until the wee hours of the morning with no luck, Jake finally had to call his father and break the bad news. He was completely stranded at Pine Point after spending the entire night searching for the fob.

Jake’s date had called her parents many hours earlier and was already safely at home, while Jake’s father had driven down in the middle of the night to pick him up.

🛌 𝐍𝐎 𝐒𝐋𝐄𝐄𝐏 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐀𝐍 𝐎𝐋𝐃 𝐃𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐑 🛌

But the story didn’t end there. Jake explained that once he finally got home, he couldn’t sleep for the life of him. The thought of that missing key fob was driving him crazy.

As he tossed and turned, he suddenly remembered that his father had an old metal detector tucked away somewhere. He realized if he could just dig out that old detector and get back down to Pine Point, he might still have a chance to find the fob himself.

Once they tracked down the old machine, Jake and his dad loaded back up into the truck and drove right back to Pine Point to start the search all over again.

Back on the beach, Jake diligently swung the old metal detector back and forth, while his father conducted a careful visual search of the area. Unfortunately, their persistence wasn’t paying off—both came up entirely empty-handed.

Feeling defeated, Jake’s father eventually headed up to the parking lot, while Jake kept stubbornly searching in and right around the active yoga class. This was the exact moment when Gary and I finally showed up on the scene.

⚡ 𝟓 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐯𝐬. 𝟏𝟎 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒 ⚡

Jake showed us the exact area where he and his date had been stargazing, as well as the route they had walked back toward the lot. Gary and I fired up our 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐛 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 detectors and got straight to work.

We set up our grid: Gary followed the dune line while I swung out a little further, both of us heading north. When we reached our northern boundary, we turned around and headed south. Still nothing.

Undeterred, we turned back to head north again. That’s when I hit a target. It wasn’t a clean, great-looking signal, but it was showing many different shapes and metals—which is exactly what I would expect from a key fob. Because of all the different internal electronics and metals inside them, fobs often mimic the appearance of trash to a detector.

I reached down, brushed away the blanket of sand, and there it sat: a black key fob. In less than 5 minutes, we had found it, and Jake would soon be able to drive his car home.

🤫 𝐁𝐔𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓… 𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐅𝐔𝐍! 🤫

Hiding the key fob completely in the palm of my hand, I started asking Jake a few questions about his walking route to and from the car. The second Jake turned his head away to point out the area, I quietly held the fob out in mid-air in front of me.

When Jake turned back toward me, he stopped dead in his tracks, staring right at the key fob in my hand.

« 𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭? » I asked with a grin.

With a massive, relieved smile, Jake replied, « 𝐘𝐮𝐩. »

🧘‍♂️ 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐆𝐀 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒! 🧘‍♂️

Right at that exact moment, the nearby yoga class broke out into a huge round of applause! They had been watching the drama unfold, and seeing Jake finally reunite with his fob brought a cheer from the whole group.

I handed the fob over and offered my congratulations, shaking his hand.

Jake let out a 𝐇𝐔𝐆𝐄 sigh of relief.

« 𝐖𝐎𝐖!!! » he breathed. « 𝐓𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐭. »

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓??? 𝐓𝐄𝐍 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒!!!

𝐖𝐎𝐖 is right! Jake had spent ten agonizing hours searching through the pitch-black night and the heavy morning fog without luck.

🚫 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐑 𝐎𝐅 𝐃𝐈𝐘 𝐃𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 🚫

Curious, I asked Jake if he wouldn’t mind laying the fob back down on the sand and running his father’s old metal detector over it. When Jake swung his coil over the key, the machine stayed completely silent. It didn’t pick it up at all.

As it turns out, the old metal detector wasn’t properly set up or calibrated. If it had been, Jake might have been home asleep in his own bed hours ago!

This is exactly why we always tell people: please don’t rent a metal detector or buy a cheap one if you have no experience using them. I was right in the middle of another active search when his message popped up. Knowing how crucial timing is with the ocean, I texted him back right away:

As soon as I wrapped up my search, I called Sean. That was the moment the true weight of the situation hit me, as he shared the incredible history of what was sitting out there under the waves.

𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐦 💔

The afternoon before, Sean had been enjoying a beautiful Maine day at 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐎𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡, throwing a football around with a friend in the surf near the Oob Pier He didn’t see it slip off. He didn’t feel it leave his finger. But once he stepped up onto the dry sand, he looked down and his heart shattered. His wedding ring was gone.

Sean told me that he instantly got that awful, sinking gut feeling—the belief that his ring was now buried deep under the churning Atlantic Ocean and shifting sand, never to be seen again.

But this wasn’t just any wedding ring. This was a piece of his soul.

This ring originally belonged to 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐧’𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, who wore it proudly for 𝟓𝟕 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 before passing away in 2006. Inside the band, it held a beautifully aged inscription of his grandparents’ initials and their wedding date: 𝟗-𝟏𝟎-𝟒𝟗.

Sean inherited this priceless heirloom in 2006. When he met the love of his life and got married, he wanted to honor that incredible legacy. He took the ring to a jeweler and had his own wedding date—𝟓-𝟏𝟖-𝟐𝟒 —inscribed right next to his grandparents’, matching the exact original script style.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 ⏱️

I told Sean that we were already fully booked for the evening, but I could absolutely search very early the next morning. The plan was to arrive pre-dawn at 𝟒:𝟑𝟎 𝐀𝐌 to catch a 𝟓:𝟒𝟕 𝐀𝐌 𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐞.

My biggest worry? Another metal detectorist might have already stumbled across it during that morning’s low tide or the upcoming evening low tide. The pier area is a high-traffic spot, and time is always the enemy.

Hearing this, Sean and his friend decided to head down to the OOB Pier that night to do a visual search themselves.

Later that evening, after the tide went out, Sean texted me with the update: they didn’t find the ring, but crucially, they didn’t see any other metal detectorists working the area either. Awesome news!

To narrow things down even further, Sean had text-messaged me a photo with a circled area where he thought the ring had dropped. I sent a photo right back to him, mapping it out so we could pin down a definitive search area. Once we agreed on the exact target zone, the game plan was locked in.

Now, truth be told, Gary Hill and I never sleep well the night before a search like this. When a ring is lost within an hour and a half of a low tide, you have to execute a flawless, highly precise grid search. The ocean gives you a tiny, unforgiving window of opportunity, and you can’t afford to miss a single inch.

So instead of sleeping soundly that night, my mind was racing. All kinds of thoughts were running through my head as I stared at the ceiling, waiting for the alarm to go off…

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐠 🌫️

When 𝟒:𝟑𝟎 AM finally rolled around, Gary and I arrived at the beach. We stepped out into a pitch-black, pre-dawn darkness. Not only was it completely dark, but a thick, heavy Maine fog had rolled in, swallowing the shoreline.

Outfitted with our metal detectors, gear, and our headlamps cutting thin beams through the mist, it felt like we were stepping onto another planet. We knew the clock was ticking, and the tide wouldn’t wait for the sun to rise.

Because the ring could be hidden absolutely anywhere within that fairly large search zone—and because time was at a serious premium—strategy was everything.

• 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐲’𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐝: I directed Gary to start just a little bit outside of the main search zone, closer to the mid-pier section. He would grid approximately 75 feet south to the pier turn, and then grid north 75 feet back to the northern boundary. From there, Gary would continue this exact pattern, systematically working his way east toward the low tide line.

• 𝐌𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐝: I was going to perform that exact same precise pattern, but with a different starting point. My mission was to start out near the very end of the pier and the low tide line. I would follow the receding tide out, even getting right into the cold ocean water to search the surf.

With our plan set and headphones on, off we went into the fog.

« 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞, 𝐈 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐈𝐓! » 🤯

The search was officially afoot. I adjusted my gear, stepped toward the surf, and braced myself for what I thought would be a long, grueling hunt. But not even two minutes into the search, the foggy silence was shattered. I heard Gary yelling out to me through the mist.

I yanked my headphones off to hear him better. Gary shouted,

« 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, 𝐈 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐈𝐓! »

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓?! 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞?!

My heart hammering against my ribs, I quickly scrambled over to where Gary was standing. He pointed down at a gleaming gold ring resting perfectly in the freshly dug sand. It was absolutely unbelievable.

But a sudden wave of caution hit me. Could it really be the right one? It was sitting just barely outside of our agreed-upon search zone. Gary carefully picked up the heavy gold band, tilted it toward his headlamp to peer inside, and checked for the inscriptions.

𝟗-𝟏𝟎-𝟒𝟗. 𝟓-𝟏𝟖-𝟐𝟒.

𝐘𝐄𝐒! 𝐀 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡! 💍🙌

Gary had found the ring in just 𝟐 𝐭𝐨 𝟑 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬 and only 𝟐𝟓 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭 into his grid search. 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐂𝐑𝐀𝐙𝐘!!! After all those sleepless hours and racing thoughts, the ocean gave it up almost instantly.

We stood there in the fog and immediately made a video revealing this unbelievable recovery.

By the time we wrapped up filming, it was just before 5:00 AM. Standing out there in the damp, dark morning air, I pulled out my phone and hit send on a text to Sean so he could wake up to the best news possible—all while quietly praying I didn’t accidentally wake him up right then and there!

𝐀𝐧 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫 🚗

Now with plenty of time to kill until Sean called us back, Gary and I decided to do a little recreational metal detecting around the area to see if we could find anything else. Just as the morning sun was trying to peek through the heavy fog, my phone lit up with an incoming text.

But it wasn’t Sean. It was a brand new emergency call from someone in Pine Point, in the Town of Scarborough, Maine just two miles away, who had lost a key fob the previous evening.

By now, it was just before 7:00 AM, so Gary and I packed up, jumped into the Ring Finder Mobile, and drove over to Pine Point. Right as we pulled up, my phone rang—it was Sean!

When he answered, I didn’t even have to break the news to him.

He had already seen the video we uploaded, and he was absolutely ecstatic! The pure relief and joy in his voice was everything. I explained that we were currently wrapping up this quick key fob search but would drive right over to see him next.

Once we finished up at Pine Point (more on that story in another post!), we drove a few miles down the road to Bayley’s Campground to finally return the heirloom to its rightful owner.

𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐧… 😂

When we met up with Sean, Gary and I decided to have a little bit of fun. Gary pulled out a completely different ring from his pocket and handed it over.

The befuddled look on Sean’s face was absolutely priceless as he turned it around in his fingers, frantically looking inside the band for those generational inscriptions.

After letting him sweat it out for just a quick second, Gary smiled, pulled out the authentic wedding ring, and said,

« 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞? »

Sean peered inside the band, saw the dates, and beamed.

« 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐫. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐮𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐲! »

We all broke out into a huge wave of laughter! Sean was just completely overjoyed, chuckling with relief. A deeply sentimental, completely irreplaceable wedding ring that he genuinely thought was lost forever to the Atlantic Ocean was now home right where it belongs.

So, another priceless ring is back on the finger where it belongs. We truly have the best job in the world, and we love every single second of it.

If it wasn’t there, I’d expand to the sides and behind her.

It was time to find Kiley’s sentimental engagement ring.

I set the detector down in the area to begin. I didn’t even have a chance to start swinging it yet.

Right there, I received the exact tone I had been hoping for—a loud, repeatable low tone and a low conductive Target Identification (TID) reading of 07.

In less than 5 to 6 seconds, before the grid search could even truly begin, my very first target was exactly what we were praying for.

𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐊𝐈𝐃𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐌𝐄?! 🤯

I pulled out my pinpointer, but before I could even press the button, I looked down. The ring wasn’t sitting out in the open—it was completely buried in the turf, but I caught just a tiny, unmistakable sliver of the setting and the diamond.

That was all it took. I knew instantly it was exactly what I was looking for.

I turned around, looked at Kiley, and let her know that her ring had already been found.

Stunned, she looked at me and gasped, « 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬?! »

She immediately rushed over. At first, she couldn’t spot the ring camouflaged in the thick blades of grass, so I carefully pointed it out.

✨ LOST AT THE BOTTOM OF SEBAGO LAKE: A PIECE OF A FATHER’S MEMORY ✨

On August 9th, my phone started blowing up. Tag after tag, notification after notification. The Ring Finders of Maine community was rallying, and they were pointing me directly toward a heartbreaking post on the « I Boat on Sebago Lake, Maine » Facebook group.

A woman named Gretchen had posted a plea that instantly brought a lump to my throat:

« This might be a long shot but if anyone is at the Sandbar today and happens to find a necklace that looks exactly like this, please send me or Jacob Burns a message, he lost it yesterday we think around 5:00pm and it is very special to him. Thanks in advance! Apologies for the blurry photo but it should say dad on one side and has a thumbprint on the other. »

The post included a few blurry photos, but the gravity of what was lost was crystal clear. It was a heavy sterling silver chain and pendant. On one side, a deeply etched fingerprint. On the other side, the word « DAD » followed by his birth and death dates.

WOW. 💔

🌊 AN IRREPLACEABLE LOSS

My heart sank. Jake and Gretchen have been dating for a few years now, and as his girlfriend, she knew exactly how much that piece meant to him. Jake’s father had passed away less than a year ago.

This wasn’t just a piece of jewelry. This wasn’t something insurance could replace. This was a priceless, irreplaceable piece of his dad—and right now, it was sitting somewhere at the bottom of the vast, shifting sands of the Sebago Lake Sandbar.

Thankfully, the amazing people of Facebook knew exactly what to do. The comments section exploded with people urging Gretchen to call in the reinforcements:

« The ring finders of Maine! They are amazing at finding all the special lost things. »
« I love to watch their adventures. Jacob Burns reach out to them, they’re your best shot. »

Gretchen and Jake did exactly that. When they reached out to me, they explained that while they knew the general area where they’d been hanging out on The Sandbar, Jake hadn’t realized the necklace was gone until much later. They had already gone back and tried searching on their own, but their efforts proved futile. By now, the heavy sterling silver pendant was most likely swallowed up by the sand in waist-deep water.

With thousands of weekend boaters, shifting currents, and the endless sand of Sebago, the odds were heavily against us. But looking at the photo of that thumbprint, I knew we had to gear up and give this family everything we had.

🛑 THE CURVEBALLS BEGIN

Planning this recovery was about to throw us a few major curveballs.

Jake’s first thought was that Gary and I could simply wade across the lake from the Sebago Lake State Park shore to reach the sandbar. Right away, my alarm bells went off. As a rule, it is highly advised NOT to attempt to reach the sandbar from the state park. The water levels change rapidly, and the area is full of dangerous drop-offs and hidden troughs.

Our safety is always paramount. Picture two « old guys » carrying heavy, expensive detecting equipment through deep, unpredictable water without knowing where the bottom drops out—there was absolutely no way I was going to let us attempt that.

Jake then offered a backup plan: he had a boat and could take us over himself. But with his intense work schedule, he only had a few specific days available, and it would have to be a 6:00 AM launch.

An early morning start was critical. If you know the Sebago Lake Sandbar, you know it gets incredibly busy fast, with boats lined up down the entire area. Trying to swing detectors around anchored boats and crowds of swimmers is nearly impossible. More importantly, the sandbar is massive. If Jake couldn’t be right there with us to point out the exact grid where they had been standing, we would be looking for a needle in a water-covered haystack.

Once we finally locked in a date to search, all we needed was a little cooperation from above. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. Our first attempt was completely rained out, forcing us to push the mission back a full week until Jake’s next day off.

By the time the big day finally arrived, that precious sterling silver pendant and necklace had been missing at the bottom of the lake for over two weeks. Two weeks of shifting waves, churning sand, and endless boat traffic.

🛥️ THE 6:00 AM LAUNCH

Gary and I met up with Jake and Gretchen promptly at 6:00 AM. The lake was completely calm as Jake navigated us out of Jordan Bay. We cut through the cool morning air, passing between Frye Island and the towering heights of Fryes Leap, heading straight across Sebago Lake toward the state park and the massive sandbar just to the west.

The boat ride took about 15 to 20 minutes, and the moment Jake threw the anchor into the shallow water, Gary and I were in the zone. In less than 5 minutes, we had our gear ready and stepped down into the water.

There wasn’t much sun that morning—just a few stray rays cutting through a cloudy, heavy, and overcast sky. The boats hadn’t arrived yet, and the water was quiet, but the gray light made it hard to see anything beneath the surface.

Having never been out to the sandbar before, I was secretly incredibly concerned about what lay beneath the sand. Knowing the insane amount of boats and beverages consumed out there, I was preparing for the absolute worst. A massive carpet of trash—bottle caps and aluminum pull tabs—would completely slow us down. Metal detectors read those items similarly to jewelry, meaning we would have to stop and dig every single piece of junk to make sure we didn’t accidentally sweep right over the sterling silver necklace.

Jake didn’t just sit on the boat and watch; he jumped right into the water with us. He thought we should head east, parallel to the shore, keeping in the waist-deep water.

To battle the clock and the threat of hidden trash, Gary and I decided to perform a synchronized « snowplow » grid search. I took the lead in front, and Gary locked in right behind me and slightly to my left. By overlapping our detector swings in this tight formation, we were able to clear a massive 10-foot-wide path with every single step we took forward.

🕵️‍♂️ THE SEARCH IS ON

We set out with Jake leading the way, guiding us along their path from two weeks ago. As we swept, our detectors would beep, and we’d scoop—digging a coin here and there, and the occasional pull tab or bottle cap. But after about a half hour of grid searching, Gary and I stopped and looked at each other in total shock.

We couldn’t believe just how little trash we were actually digging! We were so incredibly surprised and happy to see how beautifully clean the lake bed was. It turns out the boaters out here are incredibly responsible, respecting the waters and not polluting the lake with trash. A BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE BOATERS!!! 🙌

Right around this time, Jake suddenly redirected us. He had been standing in the water studying photos on his phone from the exact day he lost the pendant, trying to line up landmarks. Realizing we were a little too far in toward the shore, he had us adjust and move further out toward the open water.

With our original snowplow grid broken by the move, I formulated a new plan on the fly. I told Gary I would head out deeper and slightly closer to the boat, while he could stay closer to where we were. We would grid this brand-new area from opposite sides, cutting a path through the sand and meeting each other somewhere right in the middle.

The Sandbar was not giving up many targets. We waded into our new positions under the overcast sky, lowered our coils back into the water, and kept swinging.

🚨 THE MOMENT OF TRUTH

We had been in the water searching for close to an hour when the quiet morning air suddenly shattered. Across the gray water, I heard Gary and Jake getting incredibly animated.

Then Gary yelled the words we had all been praying for across the open water: HE HAD FOUND BOTH THE NECKLACE AND THE PENDANT! 🎉

Even from 60 feet away, the smile on Jake’s face was absolutely unforgettable. It split across his face, bright and clear under the cloudy sky. OUTSTANDING!!!

I quickly waded my way over to them, and the sheer joy and exuberance radiating from Jake’s entire body was unmistakable. He was yelling across the water to Gretchen on the boat, his voice booming with pure relief and happiness, telling her that he had his father’s pendant once again.

What followed was a blur of celebratory handshakes, triumphant high fives, and a wave of pure emotion that I will never forget. Jake loved his father so deeply and wanted this pendant back so badly. It wasn’t just metal—it was a literal, physical piece of his father. Two long weeks of worrying, a rained-out search, and a massive body of water couldn’t keep them apart.

Once we finally made it back on shore, the celebration didn’t stop. Gary and I were showered with an endless stream of « thank you so much, » heartfelt handshakes, and massive hugs from both Jake and Gretchen.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY IN YORK, MAINE! 💍🌊🙌

Just at 1:29 PM today, I received a text from Brian with a message that every married person dreads. Around 1:00 PM, he had lost his wedding ring in the water at Short Sands Beach in York, Maine.

Brian had been out in the ocean playing volleyball with his children when the ring slipped off. Fortunately, he was able to provide incredibly precise details about exactly where he was. His text read:

« Hi Dennis, my name is Brian W*******. I lost my wedding ring today in the water at Short Sands Beach in York. It was around 1pm, high tide was 12:30. I was only waste deep at the time, about 30ish yards from the rocks on the left side, the Union Bluff Hotel side. Is it at all possible you might be in the area? »

🕒 The Quick Reply & Setup

I immediately replied: « Hi, I am at a Dr appointment, with my mother. We should be finished very soon and I can come as soon as she is done. Do you see or feel it coming off? »

Brian quickly texted back: « I was standing in one spot hitting a volleyball. I didn’t see it come off but it definitely did while playing. I know the tide goes out pretty far. »

I let Brian know that my mother would soon be done with her appointment and I would be on my way to meet up with him. Once I brought my mother safely home, Cheryl and I geared up and headed straight to York, Maine.

🏖️ Formulating the Strategy

We arrived at Short Sands Beach around 3:15 PM and contacted Brian to get his location. We walked down past Fun-O-Rama to meet him, and he immediately took us down to the area where the volleyball game had taken place.

With low tide still three hours away, it was time to formulate a strategy. Brian told me the lost band was a Titanium Wedding Ring. He knew exactly where he had been standing to play volleyball, but as any ring finder knows, a ring can fly off a finger in absolutely any direction when you strike a ball.

Because the beach was far too busy to navigate the crowds on the dry sand, my game plan focused exclusively on the wet sand. I decided to grid search north to south, parallel with the shoreline and the receding water. I told Brian I would start about 20 feet closer to the shore and sweep an approximately 60-to-75-foot width of the wet beach. This would ensure I covered everything straight through his playing zone and all the way down to the low tide line.

🔍 Ok, Let’s Go Find a Wedding Ring!

Fired up and ready, I flipped on the metal detector, dialed in the settings for the wet salt sand, and took my first sweeps.

Almost immediately, a challenge popped up. The wet sand was still packed with people, beach chairs, and gear. Since I couldn’t sweep right under active beachgoers, I had to pivot my technique. Whenever I ran into a crowded spot I couldn’t access, I dug a couple of distinct holes in the sand right next to it. This was my marker system—a visual reminder of exactly where I needed to double back and search later as the crowds packed up for the day.

Slowly, I worked my way down toward the surf. My detector was singing, but it was just the usual beach junk—pull tabs, foil, and the occasional coin. After nearly two hours of relentless swinging, I hit the low tide line. I doubled back to sweep every single area I had previously marked with my holes. Still nothing.

🛑 Facing a Football Field of Sand

Brian and I huddled up to rethink our plan. There was no way that titanium ring had rolled all the way down to the low tide mark on its own. Since he never felt it slip off, I suggested a new theory: the ring might be sitting much higher up on the wet beach, or even in the dry sand around his family’s original setup.

I estimated it would take me another hour to grind out the space between my starting line and their beach blankets.

Expanding the grid meant I was now staring down a search area the size of a literal football field. It was a massive amount of ground to cover alone, and I knew that if the ring didn’t turn up here, we would have to completely reassess the situation.

🚨 The Best Tone of the Day

By now, it was just after 5:00 PM. The beach was finally starting to clear out as I worked my grid back up towards the dunes.

Suddenly, about 30 feet higher up from my original starting point, my machine let out a beautiful, crisp low tone. It was easily the best-sounding target of the entire day.

Could this be it?

I looked over at Brian and told him the signal was incredibly promising, but I didn’t want to guarantee anything until it was out of the ground. I scooped deep into the heavy, hard-packed sand and flipped it over.

There, nestled perfectly in the clump of sand inside my scoop, a silver band caught the light. I just knew it had to be his!

Brian hurried over, took one look into the scoop, and instantly verified it was his missing titanium wedding ring!

The beach immediately erupted! High fives and hugs were exchanged, and a nearby group of beachgoers who had been silently pulling for us the entire afternoon broke out into wild cheering and clapping. Brian was absolutely ecstatic, smiling from ear to ear with his ring back where it belonged.

❤️ Why We Never Give Up

That exact rush of emotion is precisely why I refuse to give up on a hunt. I knew the ring had to be out there somewhere. When you hit the two-hour mark with empty pockets, you just have to dig deep and push onward until every single avenue has been explored.

The ring was sitting perfectly within that original 75-foot width we mapped out—it was just sitting a lot higher up the beach than Brian ever realized. Was it thrown that way when his hand struck the volleyball? Was he standing a bit further up than he remembered? Did the incoming tide push it landward? We will never know. But that unpredictability is exactly why expanding your grid is so vital. You can never truly predict where a flying ring will land!

By the time we pulled it up, Brian’s wife and kids had already headed back to the room to get ready for dinner. After another celebratory handshake, Brian took off in a hurry to go surprise his family with the incredible news. Dinner was definitely going to taste a whole lot better tonight with that ring back on his finger.

I love my job—it truly is the best job in the world.
