Sterling Silver Wedding Ring Lost In The Ocean Park, Old Orchard Beach Maine Surf, Found With A Metal Detector

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

Late Wednesday Evening, on August 6th, I received the following message, from Marjorie

“Hi. Just this evening , Wednesday I lost a Silver Ring/ Wedding Band – a simple band (sz 7). Long story short: around 7:30-8pm, my kids found it in the crab bucket (they were putting the crabs back in the ocean), then my daughter wore it, but went into the edge of the water where it slipped off her finger. They were in front of the lifeguard station between Casco Ave. & Tioga Ave, here in Ocean Park, Maine (we’re staying at ** ******* Ave). We just looked around and couldn’t find it and the tide is coming up. Do you think you could help me find my supposed to be interim replacement wedding band? Thanks for any help! My phone # is 802-***-****. I will try looking for it after sunrise. Thanks.”

It was now approximately 9:45pm and I immediately messaged Marjorie back, with the following two messages

“Hi Marjorie, So sorry to hear this. I would need to look at the tide charts, to see when the best time to search is.
In the interim, is this the area you think the ring is in?” I then sent a photo

“Hi Marjorie, Gary Hill and I will arrive at 5:00am. The tide will be lower than it was tonight and should give us a few hours to search, for your Silver Wedding Ring. With two of us, we can cover more ground.”
Marjorie did confirm the area and we would meet her at 5:00am
When Gary and I arrived, Marjorie was already there, with her son Dawson. The sun hadn’t risen yet but the sky was beautiful. Marjorie explained what had happened and where she thinks the ring was lost. The tide still out quite a bit so Gary and I decided to grid search, from out on the wet sand, up towards the shore, until we reached the hide tide mark. Facing the shore, Gary would search to the left of the lifeguard stand and I would search the right side. I figured the entire area could be searched in approximately an hour, with both of us there. We weren’t finding much, other than the usual beach trash. At one point I had a dime and I had Dawson come over to see what a dime would sound like, in the headphones. It definitely put a smile on his face, as he nodded his head. Gary and I had now reached the slope, heading up to the high tide mark and dry sand. I asked Marjorie if we didn’t find it here, where else would the Sterling Silver Wedding Ring be. Since she didn’t actually see the ring get lost, from her daughter’s finger, Marjorie thought that we should pick up the search, just south of the lifeguard stand. We would start the search, at the southern end of Gary’s grid line and hope for the best. As I reached the high tide mark and dry sand, I started across the area, as Gary was almost up to the high tide mark. I was cutting through Gary’s area when right at the high tide mark, I received a very loud high tone, reading 91 on my Minelab Manticore. As soon as I heard the tone and saw the 91, on the VDI screen, I knew immediately it had to be the Solver Wedding Ring. Without digging, I told Gary that I had found thr ring. I also called Marjorie and Dawson over, telling them I was certain this was the Silver Wedding Ring. I asked Dawson if he would do the honors of running the coil, over the sand, where the target was, just to make sure it was there, so Gary could pinpoint it. Once Dawson located the target, Gary used his pinpointer and took a scoop of sand, with his hand and pulled a ring out. Smiles broke out on both Marjorie’s and Dawson’s face. As a beautiful sunrise was unfolding, so weren’t the smiles. We just love being able to help others out, in their time of need. Marjorie sent me a message the next day, thanking us again
“Thanks so much again! I initially lost it when the kids caught crabs by the channel in Ocean Park and I got brave enough to grab the crabs in/ out of the bucket(s) that we took back to the house at ******* Ave. That was before dinner at about 5:30-6pm. We made the kids put the crabs back into the ocean before sunset around 7:30-8. Dawson, my 8 yo, said he saw a ring in one of the buckets and gave it to his sister Gabriella as they played soccer with the volleyball. 🏐 The ring slipped off as she went in and out of the surf. Thank goodness for that lifeguard stand to help us remember the location of where she might have lost the ring 💍! Like I said,I initially lost my original wedding band back home in ********, Vermont and I’m having replacement ones made. I bought this “interim” wedding band just to show I’m married!
Again thank you so much!
Marge”

Gold and Platinum Wedding Ring Lost In The Old Orchard Beach, Maine Sand, Found With A Metal Detector

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

Recovery and Return #45

As I was driving, my phone rang. I then saw a voicemail, had been left. The transcription of the voicemail was as follows

“Hello Mr. Boothby my name is William B****** . I am in vacation luxury beach . I just lost my ring, my wedding ring . I did it, in front of the Seawatch Condominiums, at high tide. Right around the junction where the water was just highest, near the dry sand so not in the water. It was right in front of the Pink building. I am leaving tomorrow back to Quebec City and I am leaving at 9 AM. So, if you ever have an opportunity, to come check it out and I don’t know how The Ring Finders of Maine thing works. Call me back 5**-***-****. It would be really really appreciated so please call me back thank you . My name is William B****** thank you bye…”

The voicemail had been left at 4:48pm and I immediately called him back. He and his wife were at the beach, but couldn’t find the Wedding Ring. I told William that I could be there, at approximately 6:30pm. I needed to get home, get my metal detecting gear and drive to Old Orchard Beach. I also told William that I do not charge, for my time or my Emergency Metal Detecting Service. I do require a $10.00 Transportation Fee, to cover my gas, tolls and wear and tear, etc.. William readily agreed to that.

Once I arrived home, I called William and told him I would be there within a 1/2 hour. William and his wife, would meet me, at the end of Cleaves St., Between The Seawatch Condominium and the Sandpiper Beachfront Motel.

If you know anything about Old Orchard Beach, Maine, you know that parking, is very difficult, to say the least. My wife often drives me down, drops me off and will return, to pick me up later. I can’t tell you how much this helps me and she is an absolute angel, to support me, in this Ring Finder endeavor. So, a BIG shout out to my beautiful wife, Cheryl ❤️. She’s a real trooper, for putting up with me.

Once I arrived, I was met by William and he immediately took me down to the area, where he “Thinks” he lost his ring. When asked, he told me the Wedding Ring was Gold and Platinum and he just got married, a month ago. Wow, another newlywed. Plus, they were leaving, in the morning, going home to Quebec City. I just had to find it for them.

His wife Gabrielle was standing in the location , of where they hoped the ring would be. William and Gabrielle explained that they had been, at the beach, most of the day. They had taken a few walks, along the beach, swam in the ocean and when the tide came in, they were throwing a football around, at the high tide line and the dry sand. It was at this point, late in the day, that William noticed his ring was missing. Could he have lost it, in the water, on one of their walks or when he throwing the football? Both William and Gabrielle thought and were hoping it would be in the dry sand, where they were throwing the football.

William then showed me where he and Gabrielle were standing, while throwing the football. Approximately 50 feet separated the two of them. I then asked William if he was left or right handed. He is left handed, meaning the ring could have come off, and flown towards the water, at high tide. I decided to perform a grid, starting where William was standing, to approximately 5-10 feet past where Gabrielle was standing. I would also start approximately 5-10 feet to the left, of where William was standing, in case the ring flew off, towards the water, at high tide. I also want to search this area of the dry sand, because the beach cleaning machine, rakes the beach up and removes all the trash, from the beach. If I didn’t find the ring, before the beach was cleaned, the ring could be lost forever, in a landfill somewhere.
On my first pass, towards Gabrielle’s area, absolutely nothing. I then pivoted 1/2 step to my right, turned around and started back towards William. Approximately 5 feet, from where William had been standing, while throwing the football, I heard a very nice low tone, through my headphones, of my metal detector. I then looked at my VDI screen and saw a reading of 12-23. A very good sign, and exactly the reading , I would expect, for a Gold and Platinum Wedding Ring. I then turned around at looked at both William and Gabrielle and told them, “I think this is your ring”. I was that confident. William and Gabrielle walked towards me, as I plunged my pinpointer, into the sand. I immediately found the target, pulled a handful of sand up and there was a Gold and Platinum wedding ring. I had found his ring, right where they thought it might be and found in approximately 2 minutes.

They were both smiling , from ear to ear and were just stunned, with joy and disbelief I had found his ring. William put the ring, back on his finger, as quickly as he could. Here’s wishing many, many years of marital bliss to this young couple. I am just so happy to have been a part of getting this ring back to him.

Men’s 14K Wedding Ring Lost on Old Orchard Beach, Maine Found With A Metal Detector

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

I received a call from William on Monday morning, 9/11/23. William had lost his 14K wedding ring, the previous night, as he and his wife Sarah, enjoyed their last evening in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.  After leaving a local restaurant, William and Sarah returned to their oceanfront hotel for their last night in town and decided to sit on the beach and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful views, around 8:30pm to 9:00pm. When they decided to go back to their room, they were covered in sand, from where they were sitting. William brushed off the sand from both his and Sarah’s pants. Once they got back to their room, William noticed he was no longer wearing his wedding ring. He and Sarah immediately went back down to the beach to search for the ring, but with no luck. William then tore his hotel room apart, praying it was in the room, but still no luck. They both searched the beach again, the next morning,  9/11/23, still no success. William then called me after receiving a couple of very strong recommendations and referrals.
I told William that I would be right there to meet him, as I live less than 5 miles from their current location and being retired, I am able to just get up and leave. He and Sarah needed to start their 5 hour drive back to Sherbrooke, Quebec but would stay to show me the location. Once I arrived, about 10 minutes later, William showed me the area where he thought they were sitting but it now looked different because of the daylight and the tide was different. I searched the area where they thought they were sitting but absolutely nothing. He then said they 1st went to a bench and then moved down to the sand. Still nothing around the bench. At this point, I knew I would need to perform a grid of an area of about 75’ X 75’. I started near the bench and searched down to the high tide line, then back up to the sea grass, turn around and back to the high tide line, etc.. I was finding the usual trash of pull tabs and tent stakes but not much else. After about an hour and as I was at the top of the slope, heading to the high tide line. I received a very loud low tone on my Minelab CTX-3030. VDI screen was reading a very solid 12-24. I stuck my pinpointer into the dry sand and found my target. I caught a small glimpse of yellow and I just had to break out in a big smile. I pulled the ring out of the sand, turned around to show William and Sarah, who were now sitting in the sand up near the sea grass and said, “I got it”. As William saw the ring, he jumped up and said “No Way” and broke out in a smile from ear to ear. He then came over to where I was and we shared a nice big enthusiastic high five. The ride back to Sherbrooke, Quebec just became much more bearable. A Beautiful Day indeed

Gold Necklace Lost In The Water And Waves At Low Tide, Very Sentimental

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

I had seen a post on Facebook, by Kelli,  about a MISSING GOLD CHAIN WITH A CROSS, being lost on the beach. Later that morning, I received a text from Kelli wanting to know if I could help. After talking with Kelli, I found out the Gold Chain and Cross Pendant had been lost 2 days earlier, in the surf, approximately 1 1/2 hours after the low tide. Since it wouldn’t be low tide for another 4 hours, I told Kelli that I would meet her in 2 hours at the Old Orchard Beach, Maine location, where the necklace had been lost, 2 days earlier.
Once I arrived, I met Kelli and her boyfriend, Jake. Jake explained that the waves were really rough that day and the necklace somehow came off his neck and disappeared, into the Waves, Water and Sand. I told them that I would grid the beach, parallel to the water and follow the tide out, hoping the necklace would then appear in just the wet sand and no longer under the water.
I was performing the grid search for approximately 1:20 minutes, when Jake came down to me , near the low tide mark. He explained that he and Kelli had to leave and and were leaving tomorrow morning to go back home, In Massachusetts. I told Jake that I would contact him if I found it and if not, I would be back the next day, at low tide and expand the search. After Jake left, I decided to try the shallow water, as low tide was now upon us. I started a grid search in the water and was working my way towards shore. I finally received a decent low tone signal, reading 12-04 on the Minelab CTX-3030 and put the scoop into the wet sand. I caught a glimpse of 1 gold link of a chain in the wet sand. I reached down, grabbed the link and pulled it out of the sand. I had Jake’s necklace. On 20 minutes had passed since he had left and I immediately called him. Jake and Kelli came right back and I returned the necklace. Jake the told me that the necklace had belonged to his father and that his father just passed away, 6 months earlier. Jake explained that he has  absolutely devastated , the past 2 days and thinking he would never see it again. I am so proud and happy to be able to help people like Jake, in their hour of need.

Metal detector recovery of lost Citadel Class Ring in Boothbay Maine

  • from Rockport (Maine, United States)

I received a call from Miranda to come search for her husband Tyler’s Citadel class ring, which was lost while he tended to his cattle at their home in Boothbay, Maine. The search took about 2 hours and ended with the ring recovered for Tyler and the cows happy to see me depart their pasture. A portion of their generous reward will be used to purchase locally farmed food that will be donated to The Camden Area Food Bank.
