Greenwood Detecting got the call after a kayak flipped over and a very special ring disappeared into the lake.
The water was described as being about 2 to 4 feet deep, so at first, this sounded like it should be a fairly straightforward recovery.
It definitely was not.
When I arrived, the first area I was shown was closer to 5 to 6 feet deep. That may not sound like a huge difference, but when you are trying to carefully grid an underwater search area with a metal detector, those extra couple of feet make a big difference.
I spent nearly two hours searching that deeper area with no luck.
At that point, we all started thinking the same thing. There was no way the lake had risen several feet overnight. Something about the location just did not add up.
Thankfully, one of the women who had been there when the kayak flipped decided to do a little investigating of her own. Using her paddle, she started checking the surrounding area and found another section that was much closer to the original 2 to 4 foot depth.
That looked promising.
So they towed me, hanging on to a kayak, and my metal detector over to the new search area. 😂
As soon as I got there, everything made more sense. The depth was right, I could move easily, and I was able to set up a proper grid and systematically search the area.
Another hour or two went by.
Then I heard it.
A beautiful, promising signal.
I stopped, worked the spot carefully, and there it was.

And WOW.
This was by far the nicest ring I have ever recovered.
After hours in the water, changing search areas, and refusing to give up, seeing that ring come out of the lake was an incredible feeling.
This recovery was a great reminder that metal detecting is not always about simply swinging a detector over the right spot. Sometimes it takes patience, teamwork, problem solving, and being willing to completely rethink the search.
I could not have been happier to get this one back where it belonged. ❤️
