Venice, Florida ring recovery

Susana and Kharlo Quinones were in Venice for their usual visit all the way from Orlando to the dog beach in Venice, Florida.

While playing with their dog, Susana felt her ring come off her finger and had a general idea of where it had fallen.

After searching in the sand, they googled lost rings and metal detectors and found SRARC’s email addresses. Member Stan Flack emailed Susana back and arranged for member Joe Borg to contact Susana direct and set up a time to meet as soon as possible.

Susana met Joe early the next morning and downloaded him on the details. Joe went straight to work and within 10 minutes had found Susana’s ring to the delight of a very happy Susana smiles for everyone.

Well done Joe.

Lost Heirloom Ring Recovered Sand Castle Lido Beach, Florida

Grace and her husband were down for a family reunion from Indiana for the week. On Friday afternoon, she decided to swim out to join her Mom and Dad on the sandbar in front of their hotel. Shortly after arriving she felt the ring that her grandmother had given her slip off her finger! The ring was special to Grace because her grandmother had chosen it for her from jewelry that she had had for many years. Since Grace’s grandmother was there with the family it was especially hard to tell her it was lost.

The family searched the sandbar for hours but could not find it. That night Grace did a search on Google “what to do when you lose a ring in the ocean” and up popped SRARC. She emailed the web site and Stan Flack contacted her. Stan called Mike Miller to see if he could meet her before they had to leave at 9:00 a.m. the next morning. Mike met her and got the details for the search. She said it was just up on front part of the first sandbar and off Mike went to the area she pointed to. It didn’t take long for Mike to figure out he could not walk out to the first sandbar. He had never attempted to swim with his detector and scoop but there is always a first time for everything so off he went. With a little effort, he made it and about 10 minutes later the ring came up in his scoop. The return trip was a little more difficult and he was out of breath when he finally touched bottom again. He does not recommend that anyone try that unless they have a float device so they won’t get into trouble. Grace and all her family were all very happy and amazed that the ring was recovered. SRARC is just as happy to have had the opportunity to help put a smile back on their faces! Well done, Mike! We are all glad you’re an excellent swimmer!

Wedding Ring Lost Found and Returned at Holmes Beach, Anna Maria Island, Florida

Steve and Emily were visiting Anna Maria Isand from Chicago for a little R & R from the winter weather. They set a couple of lounge chairs up on the beach and sat down to put on their sun protection. Steve pulled his weeding ring of and set it on his lap, then proceeded to apply the lotion. A few minutes later he felt the urge and got up to go the the restroom. About 20 steps later he remembered he had not returned his ring to his finger. He quickly returned to his chair and began searching the sand for his wedding ring. His wife, Emily, soon joined the search sifting through the sand with her fingers. They had no luck so Steve googled “metal detector rental” and up popped SRARC. He called Mike who was in downtown Bradenton at the time and they agreed to meet as soon as Mike could get down to the beach. Thirty minutes later Mike arrived and Steve lead him to the spot where they had been sitting. In a few swings, bada bing, and the ring was returned to Steve. We had lots of smiles and some cheering from the beach crowd as he returned it to his finger.

Wedding Ring Set Lost, Found, and Returned on Anna Maria Island, Florida

Nellie and Her husband Austin were on Anna Maria Island from Battleground, Washington for spring break and a family reunion. The whole family had walked to the beach for a little fun in the sun Florida style. They set up camp on the beach and soon Nellie’s mother walked into the water. Feeling a little frisky Nellie followed her in and knowing the water was a little cool, She started to splash it up on her mother and the reaction was as you would expect.. A short time later, after things calmed down, Nellie sensed her hand felt a little lite. Looking down she saw that her wedding set was missing. The whole family gathered around and searched frantically for the ring. After an hour Nellie’s brother did a search for lost rings on the internet and up popped SRARC. Mike Miller and Paul Hill were available to meet the family right away while they were still at the beach and after receiving instructions they went to work. In just a few minutes Mike was the lucky one to find the ring. He held it up and they couldn’t believe it had been found. Everyone on the beach cheered and clapped and Mike got a big hug from Nellie. Austin got the ring and went down on his knee and proposed to Nellie all over again. We were all smiling about this perfect ending. SRARC is happy to bring a happy ending to the reunion and give them a story to talk about at their next reunion.

Engagement Ring Lost, Found, and Returned on Longboat Key, Florida

Jeoff and Kaylie were visiting his parents on Longboat Key for spring break from Medical school in Illinois where Jeoff is studying to be a heart surgeon. They had recently become engaged and it was a good time to just relax and enjoy each other. They went out onto the sand in front of the condo and put some chairs out, then placed their towels over the chairs. Kaylie took off her engagement ring and set it on her towel to put suntan lotion on and when done forgot all about her ring. After a short time lying in the sun they decided to go for a walk down the beach. When they returned the wind had blown their towels off of the chairs onto the sand. It was then that Kaylie remembered she had left her ring on the towel. They began frantically looking for the ring and soon Jeoff’s parents and several other condo owners joined in sifting through the sand. They also found a metal detector rental place and tried to find it with a detector but the detector seemed to beep all the time and they never found anything so they gave that up. They searched all day and later that evening Jeoff found the Suncoast Research and Recovery Club (SRARC) ring finders page on the internet. He contacted Mike and they set a time to meet the following morning. When Mike arrived Jeoff showed him a nicely marked area where they had been sitting. About 4 steps and 6 swings later Mike found the ring. Jeoff, Kaylie, and his Mom and Dad, were amazed at how easily it was found after they had spent all day trying to find it. There were smiles all around and Mike’s was as big as Kaylie’s and Jeoff’s. All of us at SRARC wish nothing but the best for these two and hope they have many happy years together.

Valentines Day Wedding Ring Lost, Found and Returned on Siesta Key Beach, Florida

Ron and Mercy Manning were spending the week of July 4th with her family on Siesta Key. Ron was out in the water throwing a ball when his white gold wedding ring came off and went into the water. The whole family went in the water looking for the ring. Ron and Mercy had planned to stay at Siesta for the whole week until Mercy’s sister injured herself and had to be taken back to Miami. Losing the ring and having to leave it behind broke Ron’s heart and also their daughter who was afraid that the ring was gone and her parents would no longer be married. Mercy reassured her that they were still married.

Upon returning to Miami Mercy found theringfinders.com on the internet and contacted Tom Jones on July 7th and scheduled a hunt for July 8. Tom, Mike Miller, Mike Shuler, Ed Osmar and Mark Sillence arrived at the beach and started hunting for the ring. After searching the area where the ring was lost with no results, Ed and Mark moved to the gulf side of the sand bar. Not long after Ed yells out, “is this it?” Tom took the ring and read the date 02/14/97 which was Ron and Mercy’s wedding date. Tom called her on facetime to give the good news and be able to see her face when she saw the ring. She was over joyed when she heard that the ring had actually been found. Mercy called her aunt who was still on Siesta and the ring was given to her to take home to Ron.

Lost and Found Wedding Ring Returned at Siesta Key, Florida

As he walked out of the water, Zane realized he had lost his wedding ring. Devastated, he told his wife and then all the family joined in the search but with no luck. They had all come to Florida from Atlanta, Georgia to enjoy the beaches and then take the kids to Disney World so this event was just not in the plan.

Zane had been tossing a football in the water with his brother and never felt the ring come off his finger. His sister-in-law Kimberly immediately googled lost ring Sarasota and SRARC popped up on The Ring Finders. She contacted Tom who passed her on to Mike. They had people waiting in the area that the ring was lost but they needed to leave for their trip to Orlando soon. Mike headed down to Siesta Key right away and arrived as they began to pack up their beach gear. After getting the lay of the land, Mike went to work and after about 30 minutes the ring came back out of the water and into Zane’s hand. Zane was all smiles and they all were soon on their way to Disney world I’m sure to the children’s delight.

Diamond and Gold Wedding Ring Set Lost, Found, and Returned on Siesta Key Beach, Florida

Joe and Michelle were over from Jupiter, Florida to visit with some of their friends who had come down from St Johns, Canada for a warm weekend vacation at the beach. To be sure Michelle didn’t lose her wedding ring while on the beach or in the water, she put the ring into the pocket on her beach chair. They all enjoyed a great day in the sun at Siesta Key beach. When it came time to go, they folded up their chairs and headed for their car. While loading the chair into the car Michelle remembered her ring. They looked all over the car and then returned to the beach where they had been setting. After searching for a while someone on the beach mentioned that they needed to rent a metal detector. Joe googled lost ring Siesta Key and up popped SRARC on The Ring Finders site. Joe called Mike Miller and Mike headed right down to the beach while they were still there. After a few passes over the area they had been setting in, he hit the ring. When he handed Michelle the ring, she got a giant smile on her face and gave him a big hug. It was great to see the smiles on both of their faces and the hug was awesome. SRARC is glad to have been able to save the day for Joe and Michelle.

Gold Wedding Ring Lost, Found, and Returned on Siesta Key Beach, Sarasota, Florida

Gold Wedding Ring Lost, Found, and Returned on Siesta Key Beach, Sarasota, Florida

This is return #95 for Jay and Karen Ganz on their quest to return 100 during their detecting career. The letter below shows you why it is so meaningful to them.

Dear Karen and Jay,

On October 4th, 2015 I lost my wedding ring in the Gulf of Mexico, specifically Siesta Key Beach. I was there to act as best man for my friend’s wedding, so losing my wedding band was particularly disturbing; if I couldn’t keep track of my own wedding band, how was I supposed to be responsible for holding on to my friend’s, right?

My wife and I had known each other throughout high school. After high school was over, I left to join the Marines. During my time in the service we had both started to realize that there was something more than a friendship between us, and we started a relationship separated by thousands of miles. I had made the decision that, if we could get through my second tour in Iraq, I would ask her to marry me. Well obviously that’s exactly what happened, and when she said yes, we didn’t waste any time picking out wedding bands. I was home on leave at the time and we figured it would be one less thing to worry about later.

We went to a local jewelry store and, while she knew exactly what she wanted (and found it in moments), I hadn’t really given much thought to a wedding band. I knew I would be wearing it for the rest of my life (at least in theory) and so I ended up mulling over a few different ones. Finally, my wife pointed to one in particular and asked what I thought. It was hefty and for some reason I just liked the way it looked and felt. The jeweler pulled it out and it fit perfectly. No need to order a different size, just box it up and check one very important thing off the list of “to dos.” We got married on June 27, 2009, and watching my wife slip that ring onto my finger is still one of my favorite memories.

Fast-forward to the summer of 2015. I had completed my Bachelor’s degree and my Law School education. I was preparing to take the bar exam in Ohio and, in order to help cope with the stress, I had gotten back to a regimented diet and exercise plan. For me, when a stressful event is coming up, it usually helps for me to make sure I’m working out and eating right. So naturally, I started to shed a few pounds. The only downside to this is that my wedding band started fitting a little more loosely. By the time October rolled around, I had actually started curling my ring finger to make sure my band didn’t slip off. Until I went swimming in the ocean, that is. Playing in the waves with a couple of friends, a wave pulled the ring right off my finger. I instantly dove under to try and grab it, but I couldn’t see and the waves were strong enough to be very disorienting.

I stormed back to the condo we were all staying at, absolutely beside myself. My wife took a piece of plastic wrap and fashioned it into a make shift ring; slipping it onto my hand the same way she had six and a half years earlier. At that moment, I was reminded that stuff is just stuff. That I could lose a hundred rings and it wouldn’t change the way my wife and I feel about each other.

We returned home to Ohio and discussed getting a replacement. That would of course have to wait until I was finally able to start working as an attorney. My wife suggested posting to a internet lost and found. “Who knows, it’s not like we have something to lose, right?” Well, I couldn’t disagree with that logic, so she went ahead and made the post. Within 24 hours we were contacted by Karen. It turns out, finding my ring wasn’t as much of a long shot as I had thought.

Within a few days I received a text from my newlywed friend, who was still in Florida, currently living the dream of a great honeymoon with a bride of his own. What he sent me was a picture of my ring. I was floored. It had been almost a week since I had lost it, but sure enough that was my wedding band.

My mind raced, and June 27, 2009 came flooding back into my mind’s eye: her dress; her smile; her laugh; her beauty. So many words echoed in my ears: “my friend;” “my love;” “my wife.”

Stuff is just stuff. But that doesn’t mean it can’t have sentimental value. Getting my ring back wasn’t just getting back a piece of gold. It was getting back the ring my wife placed on my hand the day we said “I do.” It was also a reminder of how amazing people can be. Total strangers, with no expectation of reimbursement, had gone out of their way to return something to me. I can’t say thank you enough, and one day I hope to be able to do the same for another. Thank you.
